Recording is available only on eligible accounts and when the meeting’s host and administrator settings allow it. Google saves the file to the meeting organizer’s Drive, not necessarily the recorder’s.
Start and stop a Google Meet recording
Google’s computer workflow is:
- Start or join the Meet on a computer. Join the meeting before presenting; joining only to present is not enough to record.
- At the lower right, select Meeting tools > Recording.
- To include captions, choose the caption language if prompted.
- Select Start recording, then confirm Start.
- To finish, open Meeting tools > Recording > Stop recording and confirm.
Google says participants are notified when recording starts or stops. Recording also stops when everyone leaves, or automatically after eight hours. Google’s help pages conflict on Android availability: the main recording instructions mention Android, while its troubleshooting page says recording is available only on a computer. Use the computer workflow for dependable guidance and check your account’s controls rather than assuming mobile support. Check whether your account and meeting are eligible
Recording depends on both the subscription and the meeting’s permissions. Google lists these eligible offerings: Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Education Plus for staff, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Workspace Individual, and Google One subscriptions with at least 2 TB. The fact that an edition is listed does not override administrator or host controls.
For a managed Workspace account, an administrator must enable recording. Google describes possible recording roles as the host; an eligible participant when the host permits it; an external co-host; an internal participant when Host Management is off; or a Classroom teacher or co-teacher. Education Fundamentals and Education Standard have additional restrictions, while Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade follow different eligibility rules. Check the specific account edition and role in Google’s recording eligibility and instructions before changing plans.

If your organization requires explicit consent for recording or related features, follow the on-screen prompt to click Start, Join, or Continue. A notification is shown to meeting participants when recording begins and ends.
What gets recorded, and where the file goes
Google says, “Video recordings include the active speaker and anything presented.” Captions may also be saved. The recording is stored in the meeting organizer’s Google Drive. The organizer and the person who started the recording receive an email link, and the Calendar event may also contain the link. Processing can take time after the meeting ends, so the file may not appear immediately. Google Meet Help: Find or manage a recording.

Find recordings in Drive in 2026
Google says that starting in July 2026, the existing Meet Recordings folder is to be renamed Legacy Meet Recordings and moved inside a new Google Meet folder. New recordings go into meeting-specific subfolders. Google says old links continue to work. If a recording is missing, check the organizer’s Drive and email rather than only the account of the person who clicked record. Google Meet Help: Record a video meeting.

Work through these checks in order; recording problems are commonly tied to account access, meeting role, or storage rather than a fault with the computer.

- Check the account edition. Confirm that the Workspace, Google One, or Workspace Individual subscription supports recording. For a managed account, ask the administrator to enable Meet recording.
- Check host permission. A participant may not be able to record unless the host permits it. Host controls can also prevent others from changing recording status.
- Check Drive access and space. Confirm that Drive is enabled, the account can create files, and both personal and organizational storage quotas have room.
- Join the meeting, not just the presentation. Joining only to present does not grant recording access.
- Check the meeting’s origin. Meetings created on a conference-room device or generated by another process, such as a Chrome plug-in, may not be recordable.
- Leave the breakout room. Google lists breakout rooms as unsupported for recording.
- If a completed recording is missing, allow time for it to generate. Check the organizer’s Drive and email. Changes to the organizer or a meeting held outside its scheduled Calendar time can affect where the link is sent.

Google states that it does not store video or audio records of a meeting unless a recording, transcript, or note-taking feature is activated. Recording a meeting still makes participants aware that recording has started or stopped through Meet’s notifications. Follow your organization’s rules and any applicable consent requirements before recording. Google Meet Security & Privacy.
