For a page controlled by Puppeteer, use its Page.record() API to record to MP4; the current Puppeteer reference marks it experimental. Use getDisplayMedia() when a person should choose a tab, window, or screen in Chrome’s browser picker—it does not silently select a tab and is not a Puppeteer recording method. An extension that captures its active tab is a third, separate route: chrome.tabCapture.
Choose the capture method that matches your workflow
| What you need | Documented route | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Record a Puppeteer-controlled page to MP4 | Page.record() |
Uses Chrome DevTools Protocol screen recording and is marked experimental in Puppeteer’s current Page.record() reference. |
| Record a Puppeteer page using the screencast method | Page.screencast() |
Defaults to WebM, VP9, and 30 FPS; the documentation says ffmpeg must be installed. See the Page.screencast() reference. |
| Let a person pick a tab, window, or screen in Chrome | getDisplayMedia() |
Opens Chrome’s chooser. Chrome’s extension guide notes that a capture started from a content script ends when the user navigates to a new page. |
| Start capture of the active tab from an extension action | chrome.tabCapture |
Requires extension invocation by the user; Chrome 116 changed how a service-worker-created stream ID can be used in an offscreen document under documented restrictions. |
| Let an extension user choose a desktop source | chrome.desktopCapture |
Chrome documents this as a chooser-based desktop capture flow, distinct from active-tab capture. |
The approaches have different owners and setup: Puppeteer controls page capture, getDisplayMedia() asks the browser user to choose a display surface, and extension APIs operate through an installed extension. The cited documentation does not establish that their fidelity, audio support, or performance is identical.

Record a Puppeteer page with Page.record()
The current Puppeteer API reference documents Page.record() as a CDP-based screen recording API that outputs MP4. Its experimental label matters: check the API documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project before building a workflow around it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
const recorder = await page.record({
path: 'recording.mp4',
});
// Perform the interactions you want in the recording here.
await page.waitForTimeout(3000);
await recorder.stop();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This follows the API’s documented sequence: navigate, start recording, then stop the recorder. Consult the reference for the current signature and options; do not assume an option or stability level not documented for your installed version.

Use Page.screencast() when its format and dependency fit
Puppeteer also documents Page.screencast() as a page-recording method. Its documented defaults are WebM, VP9, and 30 FPS, and the API documentation says ffmpeg must be installed.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
const recorder = await page.screencast({ path: 'recording.webm' });
// Perform the interactions you want to capture here.
await page.waitForTimeout(3000);
await recorder.stop();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install ffmpeg in the environment where the capture runs, and check the installed Puppeteer version’s screencast reference for the supported options and exact method signature.

const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
audio: true,
video: true,
});
This returns a media stream after user selection; it does not provide a silent way to target a particular Chrome tab. Chrome’s guide points to the MediaRecorder API for recording a stream. The choice of capture surface and browser prompt are part of the flow, so use this when browser-mediated selection is required rather than as a replacement for Puppeteer’s page recorder.
In Chrome’s extension guide, a getDisplayMedia() capture initiated by a content script ends when the user navigates to a new page. For background recording that continues across navigations, the guide recommends an offscreen document with the DISPLAY_MEDIA reason. See Chrome’s screen-capture extension guide.
Use an extension for active-tab or desktop capture
Active tab: chrome.tabCapture
chrome.tabCapture is an extension API for capturing a tab stream after the user invokes the extension. It is not a page-script method and is not interchangeable with Puppeteer’s recorder. Follow the permission, invocation, and stream handling requirements in the Chrome tabCapture API reference.

Chrome documents a Chrome 116 boundary for consuming a stream ID created in a service worker from an offscreen document, subject to the reference’s origin and process restrictions. Treat this as version-specific guidance for that service-worker/offscreen pattern, not a blanket compatibility statement for every tab-capture workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDesktop source: chrome.desktopCapture
For an extension flow where the user chooses a desktop source, Chrome documents chrome.desktopCapture separately from tabCapture. Use the official desktopCapture API reference for its chooser and constraints.
Troubleshoot common recording problems
- The API is missing or behaves differently: confirm the installed Puppeteer version and check the relevant current API reference.
Page.record()is marked experimental, so its availability and behavior should not be presumed across versions. - The screencast does not start: verify ffmpeg is installed in the runtime environment, as required by Puppeteer’s documented
Page.screencast()method. - You expected a specific tab to be selected automatically:
getDisplayMedia()invokes a browser chooser; it does not silently select the tab. Use an extension’s tab-capture route when the workflow is specifically an extension action on the active tab. - Display capture stops after navigation: Chrome’s extension guidance identifies this behavior for capture started from a content script. For its background-across-navigation pattern, follow the guide’s offscreen-document approach using the
DISPLAY_MEDIAreason. - An offscreen document cannot consume a tab stream ID: check whether the workflow matches Chrome’s documented Chrome 116 service-worker stream-ID change and its origin/process restrictions.
Or skip the browser setup
