To choose a default or check the formats your model supports, open Settings > Camera > Record Video. Options vary by iPhone, so use the choices shown on your device.
Set 4K resolution and frame rate in Camera
- Open Camera. Switch to Video mode.
- Tap the on-screen resolution and frame-rate values. Depending on the model and current mode, labels such as HD or 4K and a frame rate may appear.
- Choose an available 4K option and frame rate. The selected values apply to the video you record in that mode.
- Record as usual. Check the labels again if you want to confirm the selected settings before recording.
To set a recording option outside the Camera app, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and choose one of the formats listed for your iPhone. Apple’s instructions cover options such as 24, 25, 30, 60, and 120 frames per second (fps), but not every iPhone supports every rate at 4K. Choose a frame rate for the footage you need
Resolution and frame rate are separate choices: 4K describes resolution, while fps describes how many frames the camera captures each second. The right setting depends on what you intend to record and how much storage you can spare.

- For a conventional recording choice: Select a standard rate offered by your iPhone, such as 24, 25, or 30 fps. Which rates are available depends on the model.
- For higher-frame-rate capture: Choose a higher available rate if you need to capture more frames per second. Apple notes that higher-frame-rate clips can be played more slowly in Photos.
- For longer recordings or limited storage: Consider a lower resolution or frame rate if 4K or a faster rate is not necessary. Apple says faster frame rates and higher resolutions produce larger video files.
There is no single best setting for every clip. Choose from the combinations your iPhone offers, keeping the intended playback or editing use and available space in mind.

Adjust other video-quality controls separately
Settings such as HDR and Auto FPS are distinct from selecting 4K. Their availability and behavior vary by iPhone model.
Auto FPS
On supported models, Auto FPS can reduce the frame rate to 24 fps in low-light situations. Check Settings > Camera > Record Video for this option if it is available on your device. Apple’s iPhone camera video guide

HDR video
On supported models, you can turn HDR video off in Settings > Camera > Record Video. Whether to use HDR depends on your intended viewing and editing workflow; it does not replace choosing resolution and frame rate.
Stabilization and other modes
Some iPhones provide controls such as Enhanced Stabilization or Lock Camera. Enhanced Stabilization applies a slight zoom to improve stabilization, according to Apple. Cinematic and Slo-mo also have mode-specific controls, so do not assume that the ordinary Video settings govern every recording mode. Apple’s iPhone camera video guide

Understand storage before choosing the highest setting
Apple’s guidance is direct: “Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files.” The size of a particular recording depends on its settings and content, so there is no single file-size-per-minute figure that applies to all iPhones. If you record often, check available device storage and choose a lower setting when the extra detail or frame rate is not needed. Apple’s iPhone camera video guide
ProRes is an optional format, not the ordinary 4K switch
Choosing 4K in Video mode is not the same as enabling ProRes. ProRes is an additional recording format, intended for workflows that need it, and its storage demands can be substantial: Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Apple also says at least 10 percent of device storage must be free to record ProRes. These figures apply to ProRes, not ordinary 4K video. Apple’s ProRes recording guidance

For supported iPhone Pro models, Apple documents recording ProRes directly to external storage. The required drive speed and power depend on the model and the specific ProRes resolution and frame rate. The Camera settings determine the original capture format. Editing or exporting a project later does not change the resolution at which the original clip was recorded. Apple says iMovie can work with 4K footage when a project contains at least one clip originally recorded in 4K.
