How to Recognize AI-Generated Images and Deepfake Scams Targeting Children

An image that looks strange may deserve checking, but appearance alone cannot prove it is AI-generated. Learn how to verify a claim and respond if a child is targeted by a deepfake scam or image abuse.

You cannot reliably prove an image is AI-generated just by looking at it. Treat anything strange or alarming as a reason to pause, verify where it came from, and check the claim through a trusted channel before believing, sharing, or acting on it. If a child is targeted, support them, preserve evidence, and get help from a trusted adult, the platform, or appropriate authorities.

Why appearance alone cannot identify a deepfake

Deepfakes are images, videos, or audio generated or manipulated with artificial intelligence to look real. The FBI warns that distinguishing AI-generated or altered media from genuine media is becoming harder. A visual oddity may justify checking an image, but it is not proof that the image is fake; a convincing image is not proof that its accompanying story is true.

Instead of relying on a checklist of telltale artifacts or a detector score, investigate the image’s source and context. Ask who first posted or sent it, whether there is an original post or credible independent confirmation, and whether the people named in the claim can be reached through contact details the family already trusts. The FBI advises checking strange or unbelievable media against reputable news and official sources.

How deepfake scams and image abuse target children

Virtual kidnapping and fake proof of life

A scammer may claim that a loved one has been kidnapped and send a photo or video to make a ransom demand seem genuine. The FBI warns that criminals may use publicly available photos or videos as altered proof of life. Do not pay or rely on the supplied media: contact the person or another family member using a number or channel already known to you, then report the attempt.

Sextortion and threats to share images

In financially motivated sextortion, a perpetrator may use a fake profile to obtain sexual material and threaten to send it to a child’s family, friends, followers, or school unless the child pays. Manipulated imagery may also be used to coerce a child. The FBI advises families not to blame or shame the child; paying or negotiating alone does not guarantee that threats will stop.

Sexualized deepfakes and “nudification”

A real child’s public or private photo can be manipulated into sexualized content. UNICEF says this causes real harm even when the image is synthetic. The FBI has also described a case in which investigators identified real victims behind AI-altered images, so an image that appears fake should not be dismissed as harmless.

Impersonation and pressure to act fast

A message may appear to come from a relative, friend, or authority figure and use fear, secrecy, or urgency to push a child or caregiver into acting. Verify the sender out of band, using contact information you already have. Do not share passwords, PINs, or authentication codes in response to a message.

What to do if a child is targeted

  1. Listen and reassure. Tell the child they did the right thing by speaking up and that they are not in trouble. The FBI advises families to avoid blame and keep communication open.
  2. Stop the interaction. Do not pay, send more images, click suspicious links, download attachments, or negotiate alone. If there is immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services.
  3. Preserve evidence safely. Keep messages, usernames, account links, dates, and threats. The FBI advises against deleting chats or shared media and recommends taking screenshots of communications. Do not forward or repost explicit images of a minor; ask the platform or law enforcement how to handle the material.
  4. Block and report. Report the account and content to the platform. A trusted adult can also contact the FBI, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), or local law enforcement, as appropriate. The FBI’s youth guidance directs children to tell a trusted adult and points them to NCMEC resources.
  5. Use the U.S. removal process when it applies. For a qualifying explicit image or video of a child, FTC guidance points to TakeItDown.ftc.gov. In its September 2026 explanation of the Take It Down Act, the FTC says covered platforms must provide a request process and remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after a request. This is U.S. guidance; legal scope and platform processes differ elsewhere.
  6. Review exposure and account security. Check privacy settings, limit public personal details and photos, update devices and apps, and use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available. Encourage the child to bring suspicious requests to a trusted adult. These measures can reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that an image will not be misused.

Why a synthetic image can still cause real harm

UNICEF, ECPAT, and INTERPOL reported in 2026 that at least 1.2 million children across an 11-country study disclosed having had their images manipulated into sexually explicit deepfakes in the past year. This is a self-reported finding for those 11 countries, not a global incidence count. UNICEF’s 4 February 2026 statement put the point plainly: “Deepfake abuse is abuse, and there is nothing fake about the harm it causes.”
