A physical Samsung SIM card is a tiny, flat plastic card with a clipped corner and a set of metallic, usually gold-coloured contacts on one side. Many Galaxy phones that accept a removable SIM use a nano-SIM, but the supported size and the way it sits in the tray depend on the exact device. An eSIM is different: it is built into the device and has no removable card to look at.
What a Samsung SIM card looks like
The SIM is the small card that fits into a shaped cut-out in the phone’s SIM tray; it is not the tray itself. Look for the clipped corner, which helps align the card, and the rectangular metallic contact area. Samsung’s SIM troubleshooting illustration shows a nano-SIM seated in a Galaxy tray. Its placement is an example for that device guidance, not a universal orientation for every Samsung model.

A carrier may provide a SIM in a larger frame with smaller, pre-cut sizes. The card’s final size must match the format supported by your phone or tablet.
Which SIM size fits a Samsung phone?
Samsung devices may use nano-SIM, micro-SIM, or standard SIM, depending on the model and age of the device. Nano-SIM is the smallest of these formats, and it is used by many Galaxy phones that accept a physical SIM. Avoid hand-cutting a larger SIM to make it fit. Samsung warns that inaccurate cutting or corner alignment can cause recognition problems. If your card is the wrong size, ask your mobile carrier for a correctly sized replacement.
Which way does the SIM go in the tray?
There is no single contact direction that applies to every Galaxy. Samsung’s examples specify contacts facing up for the S21 series and down for the S20 series, and its guidance cautions that orientation varies by model. Tray designs can also differ, including the number and shape of card positions. Follow the illustration or instructions for your exact device rather than relying on another phone’s layout.

Physical SIM or eSIM: how to tell the difference

How to inspect the SIM tray safely
- Find the exact model number of your phone or tablet, then open its matching Samsung manual or support page to confirm the tray location, supported SIM size, and card orientation.
- If the device has a pin-release tray, insert the ejector pin straight into the SIM tray’s eject hole. Do not mistake a nearby microphone opening for the tray hole; Samsung’s device instructions show model-specific examples.
- Pull the tray out gently. Place the SIM in its shaped position in the orientation shown for that device. Do not force the card or tray.
- Reinsert the tray fully and ensure it is dry before putting it back into the device.
