If you are unsure whether a sign-in page is genuine, do not enter your password. Close it and open the service through a bookmark, an address you type yourself, or the service’s genuine app. A familiar logo, polished design, or HTTPS connection does not prove that a page belongs to the company it names.
Check how you reached the sign-in page
Pause if a login page appeared after an unexpected email, text, advertisement, or redirect. Be especially wary of messages claiming that your account will be suspended, a payment failed, suspicious activity occurred, or you must confirm personal or payment details. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes these kinds of claims as common phishing lures: they create pressure to click and act.

Urgency is a warning sign, not proof on its own. But you do not need to decide whether a message is real before protecting yourself: avoid its sign-in link and go to the service independently.

Look at the address bar, not just the page. Check whether the domain is the one you expect for the organization’s sign-in page. A misspelling, an unexpected extra word, or a confusing subdomain can indicate that the destination is not the service you intended to reach. The page’s logo, colors, layout, and displayed company name can be copied, so they are not reliable proof of identity. The FTC’s guidance on recognizing and avoiding phishing scams emphasizes that phishing sites can imitate familiar organizations.

HTTPS means the connection to the site is encrypted; it does not establish that the site belongs to the company it claims to represent. A padlock or secure-connection indicator is not a substitute for checking the destination.
When you cannot confidently verify the destination
- Close the questionable page rather than signing in or clicking further links in it.
- Open a bookmark you previously saved, type an address you already know is correct, or use the service’s genuine app.
- If you still need to verify a request, contact the organization using a phone number, email address, or website you already know is real—not contact details supplied in the unexpected message. The FTC recommends using a known contact route to check suspicious messages.
Use the request itself as a warning signal
Consider whether the login makes sense in context. A sudden demand to sign in and update payment details, confirm account information, or respond immediately deserves extra caution, especially if you did not initiate the action. A company logo or a convincing-looking message does not make an unexpected request trustworthy.

If the prompt concerns a real account issue, you should be able to check it after reaching the service through a trusted route. Do not use the questionable page to test whether the request is legitimate.

If Chrome warns that a page may be phishing, stop rather than continuing to the sign-in. Google’s instructions also say to change a password promptly if Chrome warns it may have been compromised, and to change it on other sites where you reused it.

Google’s Chrome Safe Browsing documentation describes checks and warnings whose protection and data handling depend on the selected protection mode and signals of suspicious activity. Browsers do not all work identically, and the absence of a warning does not confirm that a page is genuine.

- Open the real service independently—through a trusted bookmark, typed address, or genuine app—and change the password as soon as possible.
- Change the password anywhere else you reused it. Use a different password for each account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (also called multi-factor authentication) if the service offers it. The FTC notes that multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to access an account even if they obtain its username and password.
- If you cannot sign in, use the service’s official account-recovery process, reached through a trusted route.
- If you also shared bank, payment, or identity information, contact the relevant provider through its known official channel. The FTC directs people who shared sensitive personal information to IdentityTheft.gov for guidance tailored to their situation.
The FTC’s multi-factor authentication guidance includes a security key as one possible factor—something you have. A security key is an optional account-protection method, not a way to identify a fake page; availability depends on the account and device.

Report phishing attempts
In the United States, the FTC advises forwarding phishing emails to [email protected], forwarding phishing texts to SPAM at 7726, and reporting scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Google also offers a form for reporting phishing pages, including pages found in sponsored search results. These reporting routes are U.S.-oriented; elsewhere, use your country’s official cybercrime or consumer-protection reporting service.
