You can retrieve a sent email in Outlook only in limited circumstances. For a Microsoft 365 work or school account, you may be able to recall an unopened message sent to someone in the same organization. For a personal Outlook.com account, post-send recall is not available; Undo Send only stops delivery during a short delay. If neither option applies, send a corrected copy—the original will remain in the recipient’s inbox.

Outlook recall is not a universal delete button. Microsoft’s documented desktop and web recall requires both sender and recipient to have Microsoft 365 work or school accounts in the same organization, and the recipient must not have opened the message. Messages to external recipients—including personal Outlook.com or Gmail addresses—do not meet those conditions. Microsoft Support

How to recall a sent email in Outlook
Use the instructions for the version you have. In the desktop apps, open the message itself from Sent Items; selecting it in the reading pane alone is not enough in classic Outlook.

- Open Sent Items.
- Double-click the message to open it in its own window.
- Select Recall Message and confirm with OK.
- Open the Message Recall Report delivered to your inbox and check whether the recall succeeded, is pending, or failed. Microsoft Support
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open Sent Items, then double-click the message.
- On the Message tab, choose More Move Actions > Recall This Message on the Classic Ribbon. On the Simplified Ribbon, choose More commands (…) > Actions > Recall This Message.
- Select Delete unread copies of this message, or select Delete unread copies and replace with a new message if you want to send a replacement. If you choose replacement, compose and send it.
- Check the Message Recall Report for the result. Microsoft Support
If Recall This Message is missing, Microsoft says the account may not be Exchange-based or the organization may not have the feature available. Classic Outlook also cannot recall a message protected by Azure Information Protection. Microsoft Support

Outlook on the web for work or school
- Open Sent Items and double-click the message.
- Select Recall Message and confirm.
- Check the Message Recall Report in your inbox. Microsoft Support
These steps apply to the work or school Outlook web experience, not personal Outlook.com.
Outlook for iOS and Android
- Open the Sent folder and open the message.
- Tap the three dots (More options) in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Recall, then look for Outlook’s email with the result. Microsoft Support
Mobile recall can fail if the message is very old or your administrator has disabled the feature. The same-organization and unopened-message limits still matter. Microsoft Support

Can you recall an email sent from Outlook.com?
No. Personal Outlook.com accounts—including addresses ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com—do not support recall after a message has been sent. You can enable Undo Send to hold a message briefly before delivery instead. Microsoft Support
- Open Settings > Mail > Compose.
- Choose an Undo Send delay of up to 30 seconds and save.
- After sending, select Undo while the prompt is still visible.
Once the delay expires and the message is sent, Undo Send cannot retrieve it.

Do not assume the original has been removed. The recall report is the indication of its status; until it shows a successful result, treat the recall as uncertain. Microsoft says classic Outlook recall actions are usually quick, but mailbox availability can delay processing. In such cases, Microsoft says it retries for up to 24 hours before marking the recall failed. Status updates can take up to five minutes for a message sent to a few hundred recipients and up to thirty minutes for tens of thousands. These are Microsoft’s timing expectations, not guaranteed service levels. Microsoft Support
If your goal is to fix an omission or mistake, use Resend message from Sent Items, edit the content, recipients, or attachments, and send the corrected version. Microsoft documents resend in new Outlook, classic Outlook, and Outlook on the web/Outlook.com. The new message does not take back the original. Microsoft Support
If the email went to the wrong person or contains sensitive information, contact your organization’s IT or security team promptly and follow its policy. Do not assume a recall or an IT request can erase every copy.
