Sony says this scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It may help with some system-feature problems or a deleted game icon that remains on Home, but it is not a way to install a failed system software update or a guaranteed fix for every post-update issue.
Before rebuilding: identify what went wrong
Restart the PS5 normally first if you can reach the home screen. Then choose the path that matches the problem; Sony lists several Safe Mode tools because they address different issues.

- The console starts, but system features or performance are behaving oddly: Sony lists Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database is another option for system-feature issues and for a deleted game’s icon that remains on Home. They are separate choices in the same Safe Mode menu.
- A game or app update will not install: Sony recommends checking the network, restarting the console, confirming system software is current, and deleting and reinstalling the affected game or app. Its troubleshooting guidance also includes the Safe Mode cache and database options. See Sony’s game and app update instructions.
- The PS5 system software update failed, or you cannot reach the home screen: Use the system-software update recovery steps below. Rebuilding the database does not install the update.
- The console has startup or storage problems: Safe Mode includes Repair Console Storage. Sony says this option does not erase data.
How to rebuild the PS5 database in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 fully off. Hold the power button for about three seconds. Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off.
- Start Safe Mode. Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony says the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller. Use a USB cable to connect the controller to the console, then press the PS button.
- Select the rebuild option. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Rebuild Database.
- Let the process finish. The console scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. Sony does not specify a duration. Once the console restarts, check whether the original problem remains.
Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes the rebuild’s purpose and the other options in this menu. A USB drive is not needed to rebuild the database.
If the system software update failed
Treat an incomplete system software update as an update problem, not a database problem. If the home screen works, follow Sony’s PS5 support guidance to retry the update through Settings. If you cannot access the home screen, use Safe Mode’s Update System Software option and follow Sony’s update instructions.

If the Safe Mode update still fails, Sony provides a manual USB update procedure. It requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with Sony’s specified PS5 and UPDATE folders and the file PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow the current official manual update instructions for the exact download and folder steps. The USB drive is only needed for this update fallback, not for rebuilding the database. Do not interrupt installation or use update files or methods outside Sony’s instructions.
How Safe Mode options differ
| Option | Sony’s stated purpose | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Clear System Software Cache | Addresses system-feature issues or performance drops. | Sony does not describe this as a user-data reset. |
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new database; examples include system-feature issues and a lingering Home icon for a deleted game. | Sony does not describe this as a user-data reset. |
| Repair Console Storage | For certain startup or storage problems. | Sony says, “This option does not erase data.” |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Removes and reinstalls the system software. | Deletes user data. |
These options are not interchangeable. Sony advises backing up before choosing Safe Mode options that cause data loss. If the console remains accessible, back up important data before considering a reset or reinstall. For persistent problems, use Sony’s PS5 support and repair guidance.
