To reboot a Google Home or Nest speaker or display, unplug its power cord, wait one minute, then plug it back in. You can also use the Google Home app: open the device tile and select Settings > More > Reboot. A reboot restarts the device without erasing its setup; a factory reset is a different, destructive action.
How do I reboot my Google Home?
Google’s general reboot procedure is to disconnect the device from power for one minute and reconnect it. Alternatively, if the device appears in the Google Home app, use the app’s Reboot control.

- Unplug it: Disconnect the speaker or display’s power cord from the outlet, wait one minute, then reconnect it.
- Or reboot in the app: Confirm your phone or tablet and the device are linked to the same Google account. Open the device tile, then select Settings > More > Reboot.
For a speaker or display that does not appear during setup, Google also recommends a shorter restart: unplug it for 10 seconds, then reconnect it. That is a setup-troubleshooting step; the dedicated reboot instructions specify one minute for a general reboot. Google’s reboot instructions explain both the app and power options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReboot or factory reset: which should you choose?
Start with a reboot for an unresponsive device or a temporary problem. A factory reset should be a last resort: it clears device data, cannot be undone, and disconnects the device from home members. Rebooting does not have those consequences.

If the device can’t connect to Wi-Fi after a network change
If the device responds to voice commands, Google says it is connected to Wi-Fi. If you changed the router or its credentials, first forget the old network in the Google Home app and reconnect the device through setup. This is preferable to resetting the device when the network change is the only problem.

Google’s instructions cover changing the Wi-Fi network for a Google Nest or Home device and troubleshooting Wi-Fi or network issues.
If an update appears stuck
Check the update status for your exact model rather than relying on a general LED pattern. While the device shows that an update is downloading, do not unplug it or change its Wi-Fi settings; interrupting the download can interfere with the update.
If an update has been running for more than 20 minutes, Google’s published recovery sequence is to reboot the device, reboot the router, then factory reset the device and set it up again. Some model-specific instructions also call for checking the supplied power supply and wall outlet. Use Google’s update troubleshooting guide for the indicator and recovery steps that apply to your model.
Factory reset only with the correct model instructions
Reset controls vary among Google Home and Nest products. Do not use a button combination intended for another model: these controls trigger a factory reset, not an ordinary reboot. Google’s model-by-model factory-reset instructions include, for example:

Is routine rebooting part of Google Home maintenance?
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting when a problem calls for it; it does not establish a regular reboot schedule or routine replacement interval. For maintenance-related issues covered by these instructions, check that power is connected securely, the Wi-Fi details are current, and the device is not in the middle of downloading an update. The guidance does not establish a universal cleaning frequency or replacement power-adapter part number.
