Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo diagnose an RTMP error, open YouTube Live Control Room and read the timestamped message beside the Health Indicator. YouTube documents these dashboard messages, not a general downloadable raw “ingest log.” Record the exact wording and time, then use the message to check the encoder’s format, bitrate, stream key, RTMP/RTMPS URL, or network connection.
Where to find YouTube’s ingest error messages
Messages appear next to the Health Indicator at the top of Live Control Room. YouTube says the dashboard checks the stream being sent to YouTube; each message has a timestamp, and an unresolved error continues to appear. Red indicates a critical error that may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow indicates a moderate error that may reduce stream quality. YouTube’s live-streaming error guide

Creators sometimes call these messages “ingest logs,” but the documented interface is a set of timestamped dashboard errors—not a general raw-log download. Start by noting the exact message and timestamp. Change one relevant encoder or connection setting at a time, then check whether the message clears and the preview improves.

“Incorrect stream format”
This points to a configuration YouTube cannot ingest for the selected stream. Check the container, audio and video codecs, and video codec profile in the encoder. YouTube’s format-error guidance names H.264 video and AAC audio; it also lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio-codec examples. That is not a blanket rule for every workflow: YouTube’s encoder settings also list H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, with compatibility depending on the applicable stream configuration. Match your setup to the current YouTube encoder settings and the specific error, rather than assuming every listed codec works with every profile. YouTube’s error guide

“Incorrect bit rates”
Unless you are using a variable-resolution entrypoint, YouTube says the bitrate should match the ingestion setting for the selected resolution. If your connection cannot sustain that resolution’s bitrate, consider lowering the resolution. The figures below are YouTube configuration guidance, not failure-rate statistics; check its current settings table before changing a live setup.
| H.264 video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s broader encoder guidance recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), up to 60 fps, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current encoder settings table for your exact configuration.

“The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate” or a connection timeout
RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, open Stream settings and click the lock icon to get the secure RTMPS URL; the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default. Copy that URL and the stream key into your encoder, and verify the encoder supports RTMPS. For an invalid SSL certificate message, YouTube says to confirm that both the protocol and server are set to rtmps; if needed, try port 443. For a timeout, check the URL and RTMPS support. A timeout does not establish one universal cause. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance

Confirm that the key in the encoder matches the one in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends getting a new stream key there and updating the encoder if third-party encoder software will not start. If the software signs in directly to YouTube instead of using a key, contact that software’s support team. If you reset a compromised key, only a channel owner or manager can reset it; replace the old key in the encoder with the new one. Decide whether the issue is the encoder, network, or viewer
Viewer reports can help locate the fault. One viewer having trouble suggests checking that viewer’s device or connection. Several affected viewers on the same internet connection may share a local-network problem. Reports from many viewers on unrelated connections make the encoder a more plausible place to investigate, though the pattern is a clue rather than proof. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance
- Inspect the encoder preview. Check the picture and sound directly in the encoder, and confirm its software is current.
- Check the computer. Look at CPU load and, if available, inspect a local recording to see whether the encoder output itself is damaged.
- Test outbound internet. If the encoder preview and local output look healthy, test the connection sending the stream to YouTube.
- Compare total bitrate with upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Other people or devices sharing a household or office connection can reduce what is available to the encoder. If the connection is problematic, YouTube suggests contacting your internet provider. An Ethernet connection may help reduce local wireless variability, but it will not fix a wrong codec, key, bitrate, or server URL. A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the evidence: write down the dashboard message verbatim, its timestamp, and whether it is red or yellow.
- Check the matching category: format errors point to container, codecs, or profile; bitrate errors point to the selected resolution and ingest settings; RTMPS errors point to the URL, protocol, port, or encoder support; startup errors point first to the key or encoder software.
- Verify the encoder output: inspect preview, audio, CPU load, and local recording where available.
- Check network capacity: compare total stream bitrate with upload bandwidth and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Change one setting at a time: observe the Health Indicator and preview after each change so you can identify what resolved the issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are troubleshooting because a pre-recorded video needs to stay live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
