To read SSD SMART data, first identify whether the drive is NVMe or ATA/SATA and note its model: the fields and their meanings differ. On NVMe drives, check Percentage Used, Available Spare, Critical Warning, temperature, and media/data-integrity errors together. On ATA/SATA drives, interpret attributes using documentation for that specific model. SMART reports useful health clues, but it cannot guarantee that a drive will—or will not—fail.
How do I read an SSD SMART report?
Identify the drive and interface
Record the SSD model, firmware, and interface before interpreting fields. NVMe reports a defined health log with named fields; ATA SMART typically shows an attribute table whose values or raw encodings may be vendor-specific. An attribute number or raw value that means one thing on one SATA SSD may mean something different on another.

On supported systems, smartctl -a DEVICE requests a broad report for the specified device. Access and output depend on the operating system, permissions, controller, and any bridge between the computer and drive. The smartctl documentation describes health, attribute, and log display options, including vendor-specific ATA handling.

Do not treat an overall SMART status or a single percentage as a complete diagnosis. Consider the drive’s warning state, available spare, media/data-integrity errors, temperature relative to its own thresholds, workload and power-on history, and whether valuable data is backed up. For NVMe field names and output examples, see smartmontools’ NVMe output documentation.

What does Percentage Used mean on an NVMe SSD?
NVMe Percentage Used is the manufacturer’s estimate of how much of the NVM subsystem’s endurance has been consumed, based on actual use and the manufacturer’s prediction. It is not a failure probability, nor a precise countdown of remaining time. The NVM Express Base Specification 2.0e, ratified July 29, 2024, states: “A value of 100 indicates that the estimated endurance of the NVM in the NVM subsystem has been consumed, but may not indicate an NVM subsystem failure.” The specification also allows the value to exceed 100.
So, is 100% SSD wear bad? It means the estimated endurance has been consumed; it does not by itself establish that the drive has failed or say how long it will continue to work. Do not translate the percentage into months or years remaining without a validated, model-specific method and workload history. Interpret it alongside available spare, warning bits, error trends, the drive maker’s endurance and warranty information, and your backup status.

How should I interpret Available Spare?
NVMe Available Spare is a normalized percentage of remaining spare capacity. The health log also reports an Available Spare Threshold. Compare the spare value with that drive-reported threshold: a value at or below it is more meaningful than the spare figure viewed in isolation. Available Spare describes spare capacity; it is not the same measure as Percentage Used. The NVMe specification and smartmontools’ NVMe field documentation describe these fields.
What does an NVMe Critical Warning mean?
Critical Warning is a bit field, not a single health score. Read which bits are set and translate each condition rather than treating the displayed hexadecimal value as an unexplained number. The defined conditions include:

- Available spare has fallen below its threshold.
- The device temperature has crossed a reported threshold.
- The subsystem’s reliability has degraded because of significant media-related or internal errors.
- Media has become read-only.
- A volatile-memory backup device has failed, where applicable.
- A persistent-memory region has become read-only or unreliable, where applicable.
A warning reports a condition; the warning byte alone does not identify the exact failed component. Low spare, degraded reliability, or read-only media are especially consequential. Back up valuable data promptly when a critical condition appears, then consult the SSD vendor or your system administrator. The NVMe specification defines the warning field, while smartmontools documents how its output presents warning conditions.
What SSD temperature is too high?
There is no single universal cutoff that applies to every SSD. The NVMe health log reports a composite device temperature; the controller identifies the drive’s warning threshold (WCTEMP) and critical threshold (CCTEMP). Compare the reported temperature with those device-specific thresholds, rather than relying on a generic number. Microsoft’s NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG reference describes the composite temperature field, and the NVMe specification covers threshold reporting.

A threshold warning or persistently high temperature is a reason to check airflow, heatsink contact, workload, and the drive maker’s guidance. Look for sustained conditions and throttling, not just a momentary reading. A zero Critical Warning value does not promise that the SSD cannot fail.

What should I check in ATA/SATA SMART data?
ATA SMART commonly displays an attribute table with IDs, normalized values, thresholds, and raw values. Their definitions and encodings can be vendor-specific, so do not assume that a familiar attribute ID or raw-field format has a consistent meaning across all SATA SSDs. Check the SSD maker’s documentation for the exact model. Also distinguish an overall SMART status from individual attributes and error logs; an overall status does not replace reviewing the underlying report. smartctl’s documentation explains its ATA attribute display and vendor definitions.

- 【Supported SSD】FIDECO NVMe enclosure can support M.2 NVMe SSD with M & M+B Key. The supported M.2 SSD sizes are 2230/2242/2260/2280. Just one M.2 enclosure can meet your needs of using different sizes of NVMe SSDs. Please not that it cannot support any M.2 SATA SSD.
- 【Super Fast Transfer Speed】FIDECO NVMe SSD enclosure adopts USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard and can support UASP, so the maximum speed can reach 10Gbps in theory. You do not need to wait for the data transfer any longer, and it can definitely save much time for you.
- 【Sandwich Design】FIDECO M.2 enclosure features sandwich-style design, which makes it easy for you to install different SSDs with no tools at all. Also, the sandwich design can make the thermal pad have a better contact with the M.2 NVMe enclosure, so the SSD itself can run in a much cooler operating environment.
- 【Portable Size】FIDECO M.2 NVMe to USB adapter features mini and pocket design, and it is equipped with a USB C to USB C cable with an attached USB A adapter. So, you can bring only one USB cable during travel.
- 【Compatible System】FIDECO M.2 to USB adapter is widely compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Therefore, whether you are Windows or Apple users, the NVMe SSD reader can make it.
When should I act on SMART data?
Back up and investigate promptly
Prioritize a current backup if the report shows a critical warning, read-only media, degraded reliability, spare at or below its threshold, or media/data-integrity errors. If errors are accumulating or the drive is behaving abnormally, treat that trend as important even when the critical-warning field is zero. SMART is informative, not a guarantee against failure.
Compare reports in context
When comparing two drives or snapshots of one drive, compare like with like: protocol and model-specific field meanings, wear estimate and spare margin, warning bits and error trends, temperature relative to each drive’s thresholds, workload, power-on history, and backup status. No single SMART value is a sound basis for ranking drives.
