In NHRA qualifying results, position is the displayed qualifying rank, ET is the elapsed time for the run, and MPH is a separate speed-trap reading. Read those columns independently: a speed figure is not the time, and it does not replace the position shown in the table.
What the qualifying-results columns mean
Start with the event heading and category selector. NHRA result pages are specific to an event and category, so check those before comparing entries. A qualifying-order table typically separates position, driver, car number, ET and MPH.

| Column | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Position | The qualifying rank displayed for that category. It is not another name for ET or MPH. |
| ET | Elapsed time from when the vehicle leaves the staging beams until it reaches the finish line. A lower ET means a shorter elapsed run time over the measured distance. |
| MPH | A speed reading measured in a 66-foot speed trap that ends at the finish line, according to NHRA’s NHRA 101 explainer. It is distinct from ET. |
For example, the official 2026 NHRA Nationals at The Rock qualifying-order page lists Doug Kalitta in position 01 with a 3.683 ET and 338.09 MPH. Those are figures from that event and category, not universal benchmarks.

How to compare qualifying runs fairly
Compare results in the same event, category and qualifying context. Then use the position column for rank and ET and MPH for their respective measurements. A larger MPH figure alone does not establish that a driver qualified ahead; consult the displayed position rather than inferring rank from one measurement.

- Plastic model car kit - assembly required.
- Paint and glue needed to complete - NOT included.
- Ages 14+.
- Confirm the event and category at the top of the results page.
- Check whether the page shows a qualifying order and which qualifying context it represents.
- Read position as the listed rank, ET as elapsed time, and MPH as the speed-trap result.
The NHRA pages cited here report rank and measurements separately; they do not establish a single class-wide ranking formula. For rules that determine qualifying order in a particular category, consult the applicable current rules.
Qualifying order versus an elimination ladder
A qualifying order shows positions going into eliminations. An elimination ladder instead lays out pairings and can show results from each head-to-head round. For example, the 2026 NHRA U.S. Nationals ladder presents pairing lines and run figures, while separately calling out low ET, best reaction time and top speed.

- Brand new box. Colorful decal artwork. Vintage style packaging. Officially licensed product. Chrome plated small parts. Contains 183 detailed parts. Black vinyl tires and metal axles. Paint and cement required (not included). Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Parts molded in WHITE, unless otherwise indicated. Trailer has side panels, frame, hitch, taillight, ramps, wheels, fender assembly and tongue. Wagon has bumpers and grille, hood, engine plate, chassis, tires, wheels, and window units. Funny car has roll bar, braces, bucket seat, stripped interior bucket, steering wheel and gauge panel.
Pairing rules depend on the category and series. The 2026 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series policies say, “Category pairings are based upon established NHRA ladders and position set by qualifying time,” and specify professional ladders for certain named categories and sportsman ladders for others. That policy applies to the series it covers; do not assume it describes every NHRA class. See the 2026 Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Policies for its scope.

What the extra fields in detailed results tell you
Detailed run results can include more than the qualifying-order columns. NHRA’s event results example includes reaction time, incremental times, half-track figures, ET, MPH and margin of victory.

- RT (reaction time): A field listed separately from ET. NHRA’s educational page explains the starting tree and timing sequence, but the cited material does not specify the precise clock origin for the displayed RT value, so avoid treating RT as another form of elapsed time.
- Incremental times: Split columns such as 60 FT, 330 FT and 660 FT show progress at points along the run. A 660 MPH field may also appear alongside half-track time.
- MOV (margin of victory): A separate race-outcome field. It is not the run’s ET.
A quick way to read a result page
- Identify the event and category using the page heading and selector.
- Determine whether you are looking at a qualifying order or an elimination ladder.
- In a qualifying order, read position as the listed rank, then interpret ET and MPH separately.
- In detailed results, use splits to follow run progress, RT as its own field, and MOV as an outcome measure.
NHRA’s Power Rankings explanation was last updated on February 25, 2020, according to the page. Treat it as background rather than current authority for class-specific rules. The sources above do not establish that every NHRA category uses the same race distance, qualifying procedure or ladder format.
