In Minesweeper, each number tells you exactly how many mines are in the neighboring squares, including diagonals. To find a safe square, compare that count with the covered neighbors and any mines you have actually proved—not merely flagged. Some positions force a safe move; others leave more than one arrangement possible, so logic alone cannot tell you where to click.
What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?
A revealed number counts the mines in all squares touching it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. An interior square can have eight neighbors; squares along an edge or in a corner have fewer. A blank square has no adjacent mines. Many versions automatically reveal neighboring safe squares when you uncover a blank, but that behavior depends on the game.

For example, a 1 beside a single covered square means that square is a mine. A 1 beside three covered squares means exactly one of those three is a mine; the clue alone does not identify which one.

How do you tell whether a square is safe?
Count only covered neighbors
For each revealed clue, list its covered neighbors. Then subtract any adjacent mines you have independently established. The number left is the number of mines that must still be among the covered neighbors.

- If the remaining mine count equals the number of covered neighbors, every one of those covered squares is a mine.
- If the remaining mine count is zero, every other covered neighbor is safe.
- If neither condition applies, that clue does not settle the individual squares by itself.
Suppose a 2 touches one known mine and three covered squares. One mine remains among those three, so the clue does not yet show which square is safe. If a neighboring clue or another deduction proves a second mine among the three, the last covered square is safe.
Compare overlapping clues
When a single clue leaves several possibilities, compare it with nearby clues. Focus on the covered squares they share and on any covered squares that belong to only one clue. If one clue’s covered group is contained within another’s, subtract the smaller clue’s remaining mine count from the larger group’s count. The difference tells you how many mines must be in the larger group’s extra squares.

For instance, suppose a 1 has two covered neighbors, A and B, so exactly one of them is a mine. A neighboring 2 touches those same squares plus a third covered square, C. The second clue requires two mines across A, B, and C. Since A and B together account for one, C must be a mine. This deduction does not tell you whether A or B is safe, but it does prove C.
Always name the covered squares and the remaining mine count before applying a pattern. The familiar pattern is useful only when its clues and unknown squares match the board in front of you.

Do flags prove that a square is a mine?
No. A flag is your marker for a suspected mine; placing one does not change the board or confirm the square. Use it to keep track of a deduction, but treat the deduction—not the flag—as evidence. If a flag is wrong, any later reasoning that assumes it is a mine can also be wrong.
What is chording, and when is it safe?
Chording is a shortcut available in some versions: after marking the expected number of adjacent mines, you activate a revealed clue to open its unflagged neighbors together. The controls differ between implementations. Chording is not a separate logic rule: it relies on the flags being correct, and a wrong flag can cause the game to expose a mine.

Is every Minesweeper board solvable without guessing?
No. In conventional Minesweeper, the visible clues can sometimes fit more than one mine arrangement. If those arrangements disagree about a covered square, the clues do not prove that square safe or mined, and you may have to guess. Some variants advertise boards generated without a required guess, but that is a property of those variants, not a universal guarantee.
First-click behavior also varies. A game may guarantee that the first square is safe, may clear a surrounding area as well, or may offer neither behavior. Check the rules for the particular version you are playing rather than assuming one implementation’s controls or guarantees apply everywhere.
