Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook do not provide one shared export format. Their downloads are platform-specific archives with different request flows, contents and limits. You can inspect HTML, JSON or text files in a browser, but treat the archive as sensitive personal data, keep an untouched original, and identify the platform and request date before interpreting its files.
What a social media export is—and what it is not
An export is a copy of selected account information made available through a platform’s access tools; it is not established as a complete mirror of everything the service holds internally. Categories, file formats and availability depend on the platform and the request. TikTok, for example, says some information may be unavailable and that certain categories may omit the latest 24 to 48 hours. Meta describes its data logs as processed records drawn from its data warehouse, rather than a raw copy of every internal record.

That distinction matters when reading an entry. A record about a viewed item or inferred interest is a platform-generated account of activity or categorization; it is not necessarily something you deliberately posted or an objective characterization of you.

Instagram and Facebook
Meta says Facebook and Instagram information can be requested together or separately through Accounts Center. The company announced that Download Your Information and Access Your Information are centralized there. Current screen labels and format choices may change, so follow the live Accounts Center flow rather than assuming a fixed export format. See Meta’s Accounts Center announcement.

Instagram’s export categories can include more than visible posts. Meta’s 2020 description notes additional interaction data and inferred categories used for Explore; the actual contents depend on the choices and data available for the account. Meta’s data access tools overview describes those tools.
X
X says you can request an archive after logging in and verifying your identity. Its support page describes a ZIP containing machine-readable HTML and JSON files. Potential categories include posts, Direct Messages, media, followers and following, address book, lists, inferred interests and demographics, and ad interactions. That is a description of possible contents, not a guarantee that each archive has identical files. See X’s archive instructions.

TikTok
TikTok’s consumer help flow lets you choose categories and a file format, submit a request in the app, and download the prepared file when it is ready. TikTok says the latest 24 to 48 hours may be missing for some categories, some information may be unavailable, and a prepared download remains available for up to four days. TikTok’s developer Data Portability API documentation separately describes text and JSON output for API requests and categories such as profile, activity, video and direct messages. That API specification should not be treated as a complete description of every consumer export screen. Its documentation is at Add Data Request.

For Facebook, Meta says data logs entered Download Your Information beginning in February 2024. The company explains that an individual log entry is a formatted version of a single Hive row processed to make the underlying data easier to understand. Can you open an export in a browser?
Often, HTML files are intended to be readable as pages, while JSON and text files expose structured records or plain text. X explicitly documents HTML and JSON in its archive. TikTok’s API documentation names text and JSON, but that does not establish that every consumer download offers those same choices. A browser may display a file, but displaying it is not the same as understanding its fields or combining it with another platform’s data.

No shared schema is established for these services. Treat each archive as a separate dataset: first identify its platform, request date or export version if shown, and file type; then interpret fields using that platform’s own context. A field name that looks familiar is not proof that two services mean the same thing.

A cautious way to inspect an export
- Keep the original. Store the downloaded archive unchanged and make a working copy before extracting, sorting or experimenting.
- Record its origin. Note the platform and request date, and retain any version information included with the files.
- Start with a small file. Open a clearly labeled HTML, JSON or text file before exploring larger collections or media. Look for headings, timestamps and category labels rather than assuming the structure.
- Keep formats distinct. Read HTML as a human-facing view and JSON or text as structured or plain records; do not merge fields across platforms without confirming their meanings.
- Check scope and timing. Compare the contents with the categories selected when requesting the export. For TikTok, account for the stated potential recency gap and download window.
These are cautious handling steps, not claims about a specific browser or parser. The cited platform documentation does not certify a particular browser tool, guarantee that parsing occurs only on your device, or establish that an export is safe to upload elsewhere.
Protect the archive while you read it
Exports can contain private messages, contacts, media, activity records and inferred attributes. Keep the archive in a location appropriate for sensitive personal information, avoid sharing it casually, and do not upload it to an online parser unless you have deliberately assessed that service and how it handles uploaded files. The potential contents documented by X, TikTok and Meta make this a privacy issue as well as a file-format question.
