Chrome and Firefox do not universally open .epub files the way they open PDFs. For a quick, DRM-free book, install an EPUB reader extension and open the file locally. Use Google Play Books when you want a web library that follows you between signed-in devices, and use a dedicated app such as Thorium Reader for DRM, accessibility, or complex layouts.
What an EPUB file is—and why browsers need help
EPUB is a reflowable ebook format: text and images adapt to the window, font size, margins, line spacing, and reader theme. Pagination therefore changes as your settings change. The .epub file is a package of HTML, stylesheets, images, fonts, and navigation data, not an ordinary web page that every browser can display by itself.

Most novels use reflowable EPUB 2 or EPUB 3. Comics, textbooks, and heavily illustrated books may use fixed layout, which preserves page dimensions and can behave poorly in a narrow extension window. EPUB 3 also includes optional features—such as JavaScript, MathML, multimedia, and complex navigation—that are not implemented consistently by every reader. Google documents these compatibility limits at its EPUB guidance.

The quickest way to read a local EPUB in Chrome
- Confirm the filename ends in
.epub, rather than.acsm,.pdf, or a web page saved with the wrong extension. - Install an EPUB reader from the official Chrome Web Store. EPUBReader’s listing says it opens DRM-free books from the file explorer or websites and works offline.
- Click the extension’s toolbar button, choose the file, or drag the file into its reader window. If Chrome asks for permission to access local files, allow it only if you are comfortable with that access.
- Set the font, theme, margins, and scrolling or pagination mode, then use the table of contents to navigate.
Another listing, ePub Reader for Google Chrome™, advertises drag-and-drop import, local storage, offline reading, search, highlights, notes, bookmarks, read-aloud, and EPUB 2/3 support. Those are the publisher’s store claims, not a guarantee that every EPUB feature will work. Its listing also says DRM-protected files are unsupported.

Check an extension before giving it a book
- Review the developer, update history, privacy policy, ratings, and requested permissions.
- Prefer local-only processing when reading private manuscripts; do not assume an extension uploads nothing unless its current listing clearly says so.
- Remove a one-off extension when you no longer need it.
The quickest way to read a local EPUB in Firefox
Firefox also normally needs an add-on for direct EPUB reading. The EPUBReader by epubreader listing describes toolbar access to saved books and direct opening of EPUB downloads. It lists version 2.0.13, last updated June 21, 2020, and requests permissions including download access, download-history access, browser-activity observation during navigation, and data access for all websites. Treat that age and permission scope as reasons to inspect the listing carefully rather than as proof that the add-on is unsafe.
ePUB Reader by Sevina opens a book in a popup and accepts an EPUB link or a local file dragged into the popup. Its listing shows version 0.1.1, last updated June 11, 2019, with optional tab and website-data permissions. Neither listing should be called the universally best Firefox reader without current hands-on verification.
- Install the add-on from Firefox Add-ons.
- Open its toolbar button and select or drag in the DRM-free EPUB.
- If an EPUB link downloads instead of opening, open the downloaded file through the add-on and review its site or file permissions.
Open an EPUB link from a website
An extension that supports direct links may open a URL ending in .epub when you click it. Websites can also force a download, or serve a file that is not really an EPUB. In that case, save it and import it manually. A URL or download ending in .acsm is an Adobe Content Server message, not the ebook itself; it usually indicates an authorized DRM workflow.
Read an EPUB online without installing an extension
Google Play Books is the main browser-based alternative when you accept uploading the file to a third-party account. On a computer, follow Google’s documented path:

- Choose Your books.
- Click Upload files.
- Select the
.epubfile. - Open it from the Uploads library.
Google says uploaded EPUB and PDF files are available on signed-in devices and support bookmarks, highlights, and notes. The benefit is continuity across computers, phones, and tablets; the cost is an account, cloud storage, and possible differences in EPUB feature support. Do not upload confidential manuscripts unless that storage and privacy trade-off is acceptable.
Google’s export guidance notes that some publishers disable export, rented books cannot be exported, large files may be restricted, and an .acsm download requires additional authorized software such as Adobe Digital Editions.

Do not try to bypass DRM. A generic EPUB renderer can read package contents; it is not automatically a licensed DRM client.

Why an EPUB fails or looks wrong
The file is rejected
- Test a known-good DRM-free EPUB to separate an extension problem from a book problem.
- Check that the download completed and download it again from the original source.
- Verify that the file is not actually a ZIP archive, PDF, HTML file, or
.acsmmessage renamed as.epub. - Try a second reader. If you create or maintain EPUBs, validate the package with EpubCheck, which Google recommends for technical validation.
The cover appears but pages are blank
Broken content references, invalid CSS or fonts, unsupported JavaScript, fixed-layout structures, or incomplete DRM decryption can all produce a cover with empty pages. Testing the same file in a dedicated reader is more informative than blaming Chrome or Firefox immediately.

The formatting changes
Reflow is normal: window width, font settings, line height, margins, theme, and browser zoom alter pagination. A fixed-layout comic or textbook may instead need a reader designed to preserve page geometry. Poorly authored CSS, oversized images, SVG, MathML, multimedia, and other EPUB 3 features can also render differently. Google specifically documents limitations involving JavaScript, MathML, multi-column layouts, and some navigation structures.
The table of contents is incomplete
The navigation document may be malformed, or the reader may recognize one EPUB navigation structure but not another. A second reader can expose whether the defect is in the book or the browser tool.

Readium says its old Readium Chrome Application is deprecated because Chrome removed Chrome Apps support. Its replacement recommendation is Thorium Reader; old guides telling you to install Readium as a Chrome app are obsolete. See Readium’s application information.

- Free novel downloaded from a legitimate source: use a Chrome or Firefox extension for the quickest local reading.
- Reading on several devices with synced notes: upload a DRM-free file to Google Play Books.
- Adobe DRM or an
.acsmdownload: use the authorized Adobe Digital Editions route or the seller’s reader. - Comic, textbook, interactive, or multimedia EPUB: try Thorium or another dedicated reader if an extension produces blank pages or broken layout.
- Private manuscript: prefer a local reader and inspect permissions; avoid cloud upload unless you accept it.
- Chromebook: an extension or Play Books keeps the workflow in the browser; use a compatible dedicated app when the book’s DRM or layout requires it.
Protect your reading data
Local handling can still leave books, highlights, and progress in a browser profile, and removing an extension, deleting the profile, using private browsing, or changing devices may erase them. Cloud libraries provide account-based continuity but move the file to a service. Before installing any reader, check whether it requests access to all websites, download history, tabs, or website data; whether it advertises local storage; when it was updated; and whether its privacy policy is available.
