Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe fastest method depends on where the file lives. Use Command-Tab to move to another app, Command-Grave accent (`) to cycle through windows in the app you are already using, Control-Tab to move between tabs, and Mission Control when you need to see every open window before choosing one. Each of these does a different job, and using the wrong one is the most common reason switching feels slow.
Start by identifying what you are switching between
Before pressing a shortcut, decide which of three situations you are in: the document is open in a different app, the document is a separate window in the same app, or the document is a tab inside one window. The table below maps each situation to the fastest method.
| Situation | Fastest method | What it switches |
|---|---|---|
| The file is open in another app | Command-Tab | Apps, in most-recently-used order |
| Another document window is open in the same app | Command-Grave accent (`) | Windows belonging to the current app |
| The target is hard to recognize by cycling | Mission Control, then click the window | A visual overview of open windows and spaces |
| The documents are tabs in one window | Control-Tab or Control-Shift-Tab | Tabs in apps that support them |
| Work is separated into desktops | Four-finger horizontal trackpad swipe, or Mission Control | Spaces (desktops) |
Apple states that the grave-accent key is generally above Tab and to the left of 1, but its printed character can differ between keyboard layouts. Apple also notes that Mission Control shortcuts and trackpad gestures can be changed in System Settings.
Switch between apps with Command-Tab
Command-Tab moves between running apps. It does not step through every window of every app, which is why a document in a second window of a different app may take more than one press to reach.

Cycle through windows inside one app with Command-Grave accent
When several documents are each open in their own window in the same application, Command-Grave accent (`) is the faster choice. Press it repeatedly to move through that app’s windows while the app stays in front.

If the shortcut seems to do nothing, check the following:
- Keyboard layout: the key may print a different character on your keyboard. Apple notes that the second key’s character varies across keyboards, so look for the key located above Tab and left of 1.
- Configured shortcuts: the shortcut can be changed in System Settings, so check the keyboard shortcut list if it has been customized.
- Focus: the shortcut acts on the app that is currently active. Click into the app first if focus is elsewhere.
Find the right window visually with Mission Control
When you have many similar documents open and cycling through them is slow, Mission Control shows every open window at once so you can click the one you need. Apple documents these ways to open it:

- Press Control-Up Arrow, or press the Mission Control key if your keyboard has one.
- Swipe up with three fingers on the trackpad.
Once Mission Control is open, click the window thumbnail to bring it forward. Control-Down Arrow shows the windows of the current app only, which is useful when you know the document is in the app you are already using. In Mission Control settings, you can enable grouping of windows by application. On a Mac with a second display, Mission Control shows the windows and spaces associated with each display.
Move between tabs in apps that support them
Some apps can open documents as tabs inside a single window instead of as separate windows. Tabs are not separate windows, so Command-Grave accent will not reach them. Use the keyboard commands for tabs instead:

If you want documents to open as separate windows rather than tabs, check the Desktop & Dock settings for the “Prefer tabs when opening documents” option, which Apple documents under the tabs guidance. Whether a given app uses tabs at all depends on that app.

Desktop spaces
Swipe left or right with four fingers on the trackpad to move between spaces. You can also open Mission Control and select a space from the strip at the top of the screen. Gesture settings can be changed, so the swipe may behave differently if it has been customized.
Stage Manager
Stage Manager keeps one app or window group in front while other recent apps appear as thumbnails along the side. It is a visual alternative to cycling, and you can turn it on from Control Center. Desktop spaces are the better choice when you want to keep groups of windows entirely separate, while Stage Manager suits a single desktop with a few active tasks.
Troubleshooting when the switch does not behave as expected
- Command-Tab jumps to the wrong app: it follows recent use, so the app you expect may not be next in line. Hold Command and press Tab until the right app is highlighted.
- Command-Tab does not reach a specific window: this is expected. Use Command-Grave accent inside the app, or Mission Control to see all windows.
- Tab shortcuts do nothing: the app may be showing separate windows rather than tabs. Use Command-Grave accent or Mission Control instead.
- Swipe gestures do nothing: confirm that the gesture is enabled in the trackpad settings, since the gesture can be turned off or reassigned.
Menu names and gesture settings can vary by macOS version, so if a label in these steps does not match your screen, search the Apple guides linked below for your version.
