In Minecraft Java Edition on PC, hold Shift and left-click an item stack to move it quickly between your inventory and an open chest or other container. In your personal inventory, the same shortcut moves a stack between the main inventory and hotbar. Other actions let you move one item, split a stack, spread items across slots, or gather matching items.
“PC” can mean Java or Bedrock Edition. The detailed shortcuts below are for Java Edition; if you play Bedrock, check the controls shown for your edition rather than assuming every action is identical. Minecraft’s Controls guide confirms that pressing E opens the inventory and describes mouse-and-keyboard controls.

Move a full stack quickly
- Open the screen you need. Press E to open your personal inventory. To open a chest, right-click it.
- Hold Shift and left-click the stack. With a chest or another container open, the stack moves between that container and your player inventory. In the personal inventory, it moves between the main inventory and hotbar.
The destination depends on which inventory screen is open and where there is room. If the receiving side cannot fit the whole stack, some items may remain behind. The Minecraft Wiki inventory reference documents these Java Edition inventory actions.

Move one item to a specific hotbar slot
Hover over an item in your main inventory and press the number for the hotbar slot you want: 1–9. If that hotbar slot is empty, the item moves there; if it already contains an item, the two items swap. In Java Edition, press F while hovering over an item to swap it with the off-hand slot.

Split a stack or place items one at a time
- Pick up half: Right-click a stack. For an odd-numbered stack, the smaller half stays in its original slot.
- Place one item: After picking up a stack with the cursor, right-click a slot to place one item there.
Spread items across multiple slots
Pick up a stack, then drag across eligible slots. Eligible slots are empty or contain the same item.
- Left-button drag: Divides the items as evenly as possible among the eligible slots.
- Right-button drag: Places one item in each eligible slot.
Any items that cannot fit remain attached to the cursor, so you can place them elsewhere or return them to a slot.

Gather matching items from scattered slots
Double-click a stack to collect matching items from the open inventory, up to a full stack. To gather matching items from a container into your inventory, use the more specific Java Edition action: hold an item on the cursor, then hold Shift and double-click a matching stack. This is not the same as simply double-clicking a chest stack without an item already on the cursor.

If a shortcut does not work
- Confirm that you are using Java Edition if you are following the specific Shift-click behavior described here; Bedrock controls may differ.
- Check that the correct inventory or container screen is open and that there is room on the receiving side.
- For gathering matching items from a container, make sure you are already holding an item on the cursor before Shift-double-clicking.
- Keyboard and mouse inventory actions can be affected by version and setup. An older Mojang bug tracker report records historical problems involving remapped controls, but it does not establish a current limitation for every version.
