To quickly total a row or column in Excel, click the empty cell beside the numbers, choose Home > AutoSum (or Formulas > AutoSum), check the highlighted range, and press Enter. Excel inserts a SUM formula; it does not just show a temporary total.
How do I quickly insert the SUM function in Excel?
- Select the result cell. For a column, click the empty cell immediately below its numbers. For a row, click the empty cell immediately to the right.
- Choose AutoSum. On the ribbon, select Home > AutoSum or Formulas > AutoSum. AutoSum is also available in Excel for the web and listed desktop and mobile editions. Microsoft’s AutoSum instructions explain the workflow.
- Check the proposed range. Excel highlights the cells it intends to add and inserts a formula using SUM. Confirm that the highlighted cells include every value you want—and exclude anything you do not.
- Press Enter. Excel calculates the formula in the selected cell.
What if AutoSum selects the wrong cells?
AutoSum proposes a range based on the location of the active cell. If the highlighted selection is incomplete or includes unwanted values, edit the range in the formula or select the correct cells before pressing Enter. This check matters especially when there are blank cells or nearby numbers that are not part of the total.

How do I enter a SUM formula manually?
Type =SUM(A2:A10) in the cell where you want the result, replacing A2:A10 with the range you need, then press Enter. To add two separate ranges, use =SUM(A2:A10,C2:C10). SUM can take individual values, cell references, ranges, or a mixture; see Microsoft’s SUM function reference.

What is the Excel AutoSum keyboard shortcut?
Microsoft’s SUM guidance documents Alt+= as a quick way to add SUM to a cell. Microsoft’s Excel keyboard-shortcut listing gives Shift+Command+T for AutoSum on Mac. Shortcuts depend on the application and platform; if a combination is unavailable or behaves differently on your setup, use the ribbon command.

Does Google Sheets use the same quick-sum shortcut?
No. Google Sheets has its own quicksum command, separate from Excel AutoSum. Select the range, then use Option+Shift+Q on Mac or Alt+Shift+Q on Windows or ChromeOS, as listed in Google’s Sheets keyboard shortcuts. Google Sheets also supports SUM; see its SUM function reference.
