Use MySQL’s mysql command-line client to connect to a server, authenticate, and submit SQL. For an interactive session, run mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE, enter the password when prompted, and type statements at the mysql> prompt. For a single query, add --execute; for repeatable work, redirect a saved file or use batch mode. This guide shows each workflow and how to avoid exposing credentials.

What you need before running a query

The terminal client does not contain your data by itself. It opens a connection to a running MySQL server, then sends SQL under a particular account. Have these values ready:

  • Host: the server name or IP address. If omitted, the client uses localhost.
  • Port: the server’s TCP port. The documented default is 3306.
  • User: the MySQL account name.
  • Password: use a prompt or another protected credential method rather than placing it in the command itself.
  • Database: the default schema to select after login. You can omit it and select a database later, but specifying it makes scripts clearer.

Your account also needs privileges for the operation you intend to perform. A successful network connection does not guarantee that a particular table can be read or changed; permissions are evaluated by the server for each statement.

The official MySQL 8.4 documentation describes the connection options and the client’s command-line behavior in the Command Options for Connecting to the Server and mysql Client Options references.

Connect interactively from a terminal

Start with this form:

mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE

Replace the uppercase placeholders with your values. The options mean:

Part Purpose What happens when omitted
-h HOST Chooses the MySQL server host. The client uses localhost.
-P 3306 Chooses the TCP port. The client uses port 3306.
-u USER Selects the account used for authentication. The client’s normal account default applies; specify the account explicitly in scripts.
-p Prompts for the password without displaying it as part of the command. No password prompt is requested.
DATABASE Selects the initial database after login. No default database is selected.

When prompted, type the password and press Enter. A successful login displays the mysql> prompt. The client is now waiting for SQL, not shell commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a query at the mysql> prompt

Terminate an SQL statement with a semicolon. For example:

SELECT id, email
FROM users
LIMIT 20;

The client sends the complete statement after the semicolon and prints the result. The line breaks in a multi-line statement are for readability; the semicolon is what tells the interactive client that the statement is complete.

You can select another database during the session:

USE reporting;
SELECT order_id, total
FROM orders
LIMIT 20;

Use fully qualified names when a query needs tables from a specific schema:

SELECT id, email
FROM accounts.users
LIMIT 20;

To leave the client, enter exit; or quit;, or press Ctrl-D in a terminal that sends end-of-file. SQL statements and client commands should not be confused: SELECT ...; is sent to the server, while commands such as leaving the client are handled by the terminal program.

Run one query and exit with --execute

For a one-off statement, pass SQL to --execute:

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --execute='SELECT id, email FROM users LIMIT 20;'

The client runs the supplied statement and quits. This is useful for a quick check, a deployment step, or a shell script that needs one result without opening an interactive session. The MySQL 8.4 client-options reference documents that --execute executes the statement and exits.

Keep the password separate from the SQL argument. The single quotes around the SQL above are shell quoting, not MySQL syntax; they prevent the shell from interpreting spaces and punctuation before the client receives the statement. If your SQL itself contains a single quote, use suitable shell quoting for your environment or place the statement in a file instead.

Run a saved .sql file

Put repeatable statements in a file such as query.sql, with each SQL statement terminated by a semicolon:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
SELECT id, email
FROM users
WHERE active = 1
LIMIT 20;

Feed that file to the client with shell redirection:

mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE < query.sql

The client reads the file as standard input, executes its statements, and then exits when the file ends. Redirection keeps the SQL in a versionable file rather than embedding a long command in shell history.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

You can combine redirection with batch mode:

mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE --batch < query.sql

According to the client documentation, --batch prints rows with tab separators, puts each row on a new line, and does not use the history file. That format is convenient when another command or script needs to consume the output.

Choose the right command-line method

Method Best for Output and repeatability Credential consideration
Interactive command Exploring a schema, trying several statements, and inspecting results manually. Human-readable prompt-driven output; commands are easy to adjust but less repeatable. Use -p so the password is requested privately.
--execute One statement in a check, shell step, or short automation task. Runs the supplied statement and exits; the SQL is visible in the command text. Do not append a literal password to the command.
Input redirection A saved query or multi-statement script. The file can be reviewed, versioned, and rerun consistently. Keep credentials out of the file unless you are using a protected credential mechanism.
--batch with a file or standard input Machine-readable, line-oriented output for downstream processing. Tab-separated columns and one row per line; no client history file. Use the same protected authentication method as other modes.

Interactive mode favors experimentation speed. --execute, redirected files, and batch mode favor repeatability and automation. Pick based on whether a person or another program will consume the result and whether the SQL needs to be rerun unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the password

Do not write a password after -p in a command that may be saved, displayed, or inspected. The MySQL manual states: “Specifying a password on the command line should be considered insecure.” A literal password can leak through shell history, process listings, copied terminal output, scripts, or logs.

Use the option with no value:

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE

The client then prompts at connection time. For unattended jobs, use a protected option file or login path as described in MySQL’s Account User Names and Passwords documentation. Protect that file with the operating system’s permissions and avoid placing it in a repository or sharing it with query output.

SQL itself can contain sensitive values. Treat query files, redirected output, terminal captures, and automation logs as potentially confidential even when the password is handled correctly.

Connection details that commonly matter

Host and port

Use -h when the server is not the local default. Use an uppercase -P for the TCP port:

mysql -h db.example.internal -P 3307 -u analyst -p reporting

A wrong host or port prevents a connection before MySQL can evaluate your SQL. Confirm the server’s listening address and port with whoever operates it; do not assume that a nonstandard port is interchangeable with the documented default of 3306.

User and default database

The account and the database are separate choices. An account may authenticate successfully but lack access to the database named at the end of the command. Conversely, leaving the database off lets you connect first and then run USE database_name; if your account is allowed to do so.

TCP versus local defaults

The documented command-line options establish the host and TCP port parameters. If your environment uses a local socket, a proxy, TLS settings, or another connection requirement, use the corresponding options and configuration for that server; the four values in the basic example are the starting point, not a guarantee that every deployment has identical transport settings.

Practical query recipes

Inspect a small sample

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --execute='SELECT * FROM users LIMIT 10;'

Use a restrictive LIMIT while learning a table. It reduces the amount of output you must inspect, but it does not replace an appropriate WHERE clause when you need a particular subset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select only the columns you need

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --execute='SELECT id, email FROM users LIMIT 20;'

Naming columns makes the result easier to read and reduces accidental exposure of unrelated fields.

Run several statements from a file

-- query.sql
USE reporting;
SELECT COUNT(*) AS order_count FROM orders;
SELECT order_id, total FROM orders LIMIT 20;

Execute it with:

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p < query.sql

Here the file chooses the database with USE, so the database argument is intentionally omitted from the startup command. Use one approach consistently in a project so a script cannot silently run against an unintended schema.

Produce line-oriented output for a script

mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --batch < query.sql

Batch output is tab-separated rather than the interactive client’s presentation format. If values can contain tabs or newlines, design the consuming script with that possibility in mind; the client’s documented batch format is simple, not a general-purpose data serialization format.

Diagnose connection and query failures

The client command is not found

Your shell cannot locate the mysql executable. Install the MySQL client appropriate to your operating system or add its installation directory to PATH. This is a local setup problem; it occurs before a server, account, or SQL statement is involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connection refused or timed out

  • Check the host passed to -h.
  • Check the port passed to uppercase -P; -p is the password prompt and is a different option.
  • Confirm that the server is running and reachable from the machine where the command is executed.
  • Verify that a firewall, network policy, proxy, or tunnel is not blocking the route.

Changing the SQL cannot fix a failure that occurs before authentication.

Access denied

  • Confirm the account supplied with -u.
  • Retry with -p and enter the password at the prompt, rather than reusing a copied command that may contain a typo.
  • Check that the account is permitted to connect from the client host and has privileges on the requested database.

Do not respond by putting the password directly into the command line; that trades an authentication problem for a credential exposure.

Unknown database or table

Verify the database name at the end of the command, or connect without one and run USE database_name;. Then check the table name and spelling. A query file that assumes a database should either name it in the command or contain an explicit USE statement.

The prompt appears to be waiting

In interactive mode, an unfinished statement has not reached its terminating semicolon. Review the preceding lines, add the intended SQL, and finish with ;. If you started a statement accidentally, cancel the current input using the client’s normal interrupt behavior for your terminal and retry carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The output is unexpectedly large

Stop and refine the statement before redirecting more data. Select only required columns, add an appropriate filter, and use a bounded sample while exploring. Large results consume terminal space and can create oversized logs or files; performance depends on the schema, indexes, privileges, server configuration, and data volume, so there is no universal runtime or output-size guarantee for a command.

Make command-line queries safer and repeatable

  • Start read-only: use a narrowly scoped SELECT to confirm the host, account, database, and table before considering a change.
  • Qualify the target: include the intended database explicitly, either in the startup command or with USE in the file.
  • Limit exploration: begin with a small result set and expand only when you know the expected volume.
  • Save stable SQL: put recurring statements in a reviewed .sql file instead of relying on an improvised shell line.
  • Separate secrets: use the password prompt or a protected option-file/login-path mechanism; never commit credentials with SQL.
  • Choose output deliberately: use ordinary interactive output for people and --batch for simple tab-separated consumption by another command.
  • Check privileges: ensure the account has only the access required for the task and remember that permissions and server configuration affect what a query can do.

These practices do not make a query inherently fast. They make its target, credentials, output, and repeatability easier to reason about while leaving performance to the actual schema, indexes, server configuration, privileges, and data volume.

A complete workflow

  1. Identify the server host, TCP port, account, and intended database.
  2. Connect with mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE, keeping the password out of the command.
  3. At mysql>, run a small, read-only query and terminate it with ;.
  4. For a single repeatable statement, move the SQL to --execute; for multiple statements, save query.sql and use input redirection.
  5. Add --batch when a downstream script needs tab-separated rows with one row per line.
  6. Review host, port, account, database, privileges, and statement boundaries when a command fails.
  7. Keep query files, output files, shell history, and credential configuration protected from unauthorized readers.

With that workflow, the same mysql client covers exploratory sessions, one-off checks, and repeatable command-line jobs without exposing a password as a literal command argument.
