Use it for a visitor notice. If you need to prevent public changes from being saved, inventory the site’s write paths, block them with controls that cover those paths, and test the result before maintenance starts.
Choose between a maintenance notice and a genuine write freeze
For routine core, plugin, or theme updates, the built-in maintenance response may be enough to tell visitors the site is temporarily unavailable. It does not, by itself, establish that every application route is unable to write data. A site that must not accept changes needs a separate, site-specific write-freeze plan.

WordPress core uses a .maintenance file in the installation root. Its $upgrading timestamp determines whether core considers maintenance mode active: the timestamp must be less than ten minutes old. The upgrader creates or deletes the file as part of its maintenance method. This time-limited mechanism is not a persistent read-only policy. WordPress: wp_maintenance()

When active, the standard response uses HTTP 503 and a Retry-After: 600 header. WordPress can use a wp-content/maintenance.php drop-in for a custom response. Those details describe what visitors receive; they do not demonstrate that every route or integration is blocked. WordPress: Maintenance mode

Enable and verify the built-in maintenance response

The commands report maintenance-mode status, not whether every application write path is blocked. If your goal is a true freeze, test the relevant public routes and integrations with a safe test plan rather than treating a maintenance page as proof.

Before promising that nothing can be saved, list the ways this particular site accepts or processes changes. Depending on its plugins and connected services, that may include:
- Account and profile updates
- Comments and public forms
- Ecommerce orders and bookings
- API integrations and imports
- Scheduled tasks that process or create data
The right way to block those writes depends on the application and hosting setup; the documented core maintenance mechanism does not provide a universal control for them. For a hard guarantee, coordinate with the application and hosting operators, use a blocking layer that covers the actual paths, and verify the restriction with safe test submissions before reopening. Where server-level permissions or configuration are managed by the host, ask the host to help implement and reverse the change.
Use a branded maintenance page when the visitor experience matters
For block themes, a WordPress Developer Blog article published July 13, 2026 describes adding a theme hook and creating a Maintenance template in the Site Editor. Its example lets logged-in users bypass the template and see the normal site while visitors see the maintenance page. It also demonstrates a Retry-After: 3600 header and cache-control behavior. Clear a stuck scheduled-maintenance notice after an upgrade
If an upgrade has failed and the standard scheduled-maintenance message remains, WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance says to delete the .maintenance file from the site root. First confirm that no upgrade is still in progress; removing the file while work is ongoing can interfere with it. WordPress: FAQ Troubleshooting
Once it is safe to remove, delete the file and check the site again. This clears a lingering maintenance response; it does not create or remove a separate application-level write freeze.
