How to Put Podcast Episodes on YouTube With a Custom Background Image

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can publish an audio-first podcast on YouTube with a still image in either of two ways: submit an RSS feed in YouTube Studio and let YouTube turn episodes into static-image videos, or make a video file that combines each episode’s audio with your chosen background image and upload it. YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist and each episode as a video, so an MP3 by itself is not a YouTube podcast episode.

Choose how to add the image

Method What YouTube does Best fit Main limitation
RSS feed Uses your show artwork to create static-image videos for selected feed episodes; new episodes can upload automatically. An audio-first show that already has an RSS feed and wants YouTube to generate the still-image videos. RSS ingestion is available only in select countries or regions, and edits to the source feed do not automatically revise published YouTube episodes or show details.
Prepared video upload You upload a video file that already combines the episode audio with a still image, audiogram, or other visuals. A show that wants per-episode visual control or cannot use RSS ingestion. You must prepare and upload the video file yourself; an audio file alone is not enough.

YouTube describes both static-image uploads and audiograms or dynamic video as ways to turn an audio podcast into audiovisual content. See YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance for the available formats.

Set up the podcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then New podcast. Enter the show title and description, choose visibility, and add the podcast artwork. You may need to verify your account. If you already have a playlist for the show, you can designate that playlist as a podcast instead.

  2. Add the episode videos to the podcast. YouTube’s model is a podcast playlist containing episode videos; keep it for full-length episodes rather than mixing in clips, other shows, or videos uploaded from other channels.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. If you are using prepared files, upload each completed episode video and add it to the podcast playlist. If you are using RSS, follow the RSS submission flow in Studio and select the episodes to ingest.

  4. Review visibility and episode details before making the show public. RSS setup starts with videos private, giving you an opportunity to review the generated uploads.

For the exact Studio flow and podcast definitions, see Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

Option 1: let YouTube make still-image episodes from RSS

  1. Confirm that RSS podcast ingestion is available in your country or region; YouTube limits this feature to select locations.

  2. In YouTube Studio, submit the show’s RSS feed and choose which episodes to add. YouTube uses the show artwork to create static-image videos and can automatically upload new feed episodes.

  3. Review the private uploads for the correct episode, audio, artwork, title, and description before publishing them.

  4. For a correction to episode audio, re-upload the episode from the RSS feed. YouTube says the previously published video becomes private. Changes to the source feed do not automatically replace already-published episode audio or synchronize edits to show details.

RSS is convenient when the show already has a feed and the same show artwork is suitable for episodes. It does not distribute the podcast to other platforms. Read YouTube’s RSS delivery instructions and RSS episode publishing controls for current eligibility and controls.

Option 2: make a video with your custom background

Prepare the image and audio

  1. Choose an image you own or have permission to use. A single still can be used for the whole episode; alternatively, make an audiogram or add motion if you want a more dynamic visual.

  2. Combine the episode audio and image into a video file using an editor or media-conversion workflow of your choice. The research-backed YouTube guidance does not prescribe a particular editing program, export codec, resolution, or bitrate for this still-image podcast workflow, so use an export compatible with YouTube’s current upload requirements rather than relying on an invented podcast-specific setting.

  3. Listen through the exported file and check that the audio plays for the intended duration, the image is visible, and the beginning and ending are not unintentionally cut off.

Upload and attach it to the podcast

  1. Upload the finished video to your YouTube channel through Studio and fill in its episode title and description.

Make the artwork and episode thumbnail fit their surfaces

  • Podcast/show artwork: use a square 1:1 image. YouTube recommends 1280 × 1280 pixels for the podcast thumbnail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Episode video thumbnail: this is a separate asset from the square show artwork and is generally 16:9. Add a custom video thumbnail if your account is eligible to use custom thumbnails.

  • File limits: YouTube’s stated thumbnail file-size limits vary by device; its Help page lists a 50 MB desktop limit for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails, while mobile limits differ. Check the live page before exporting because limits can change.

Organize episodes for listeners

  • Make one podcast playlist for each show and include its full-length episodes across seasons.

  • Use the show’s name as the podcast title and write a useful description. Give each episode a descriptive episode title; you may include the show name as well.

  • Keep clips and promotional Shorts separate from the podcast playlist. Shorts that promote a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music.

  • Podcast features can include YouTube Music availability and audio-only playback, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Playlists may be ineligible, including content the creator does not own.

Copyright, sponsorships, and review

Only use music, artwork, and other material you have rights to use or are otherwise permitted to publish. Episodes may need review for copyright and monetization issues. If an episode includes branded content such as a host-read promotion, sponsorship, or endorsement, use the applicable branded-content setting and follow YouTube policies. YouTube’s RSS guidance covers these review considerations: Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

For ordinary podcast publishing, use the RSS or prepared-video workflow above. StreamNeo is a separate option if your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream; it does not create podcast episodes from an RSS feed or stream from a camera. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload an MP3 directly as a YouTube podcast episode?

No. The episode needs to be represented by a video; use RSS ingestion or upload a video file that combines the audio with visuals.

Does RSS ingestion replace the need to make a video file?

For selected eligible RSS episodes, YouTube generates static-image videos from the show artwork. Availability depends on region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my square cover as the episode thumbnail?

You can, but YouTube’s recommendations differ by surface: square podcast art and generally 16:9 episode video thumbnails.
