Your surgeon’s instructions—not a universal technique—determine when and how to put on or remove a faja after liposuction. The garment may cover bandages, dressings, or drains, so ask your surgical team to demonstrate how to handle your specific setup before you try to adjust it.
What to know before handling your faja
A faja is a compression garment. Your care team may prescribe one to help manage swelling after liposuction, but the garment, schedule, and instructions vary with the procedure and your recovery. Your first garment may already be on when you leave surgery, and bandages or dressings may be underneath it. There is no reliable, universal sequence for putting on and taking off every style of faja. Do not pull, roll, or stretch it over incisions, drains, or tender areas unless your team has specifically shown you to do so.

How do I put on my faja after liposuction?
- Check your written instructions. Confirm that you are meant to remove and replace the garment at this point in your recovery, and follow the schedule your surgeon gave you.
- Follow the clinic’s dressing and drain instructions. If bandages, dressings, or drains sit under the faja, use only the handling method your team demonstrated. Ask the clinic if you are unsure how to avoid disturbing them.
- Use the demonstrated method for your specific garment. Do not improvise by forcing it into place or pulling it across a sensitive area. If you were not shown how to put it on, call the surgeon’s office for instructions.
- Check how it fits. If it is too tight or uncomfortable, or swelling prevents it from fitting, contact your surgical team rather than forcing it or substituting a tighter garment.
How do I take off my faja, and when can I shower?
Remove the garment only when your surgeon allows it and for the purpose they specify. Your team determines when dressings should come off, how incision care and bathing should be handled, and when the faja should go back on. Do not assume you can take it off for a shower or laundering on a particular day. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends asking your surgeon how long to wear the pressure garment, when dressings come off, and how bathing works: Liposuction Recovery. If those details are missing from your instructions, call the clinic before removing the garment.
How long should you wear it?
There is no single schedule established for everyone. Mayo Clinic describes tight garments worn for a few weeks, while Cleveland Clinic describes use for several weeks; these are broad descriptions, not individualized prescriptions. What if the faja does not fit or feels wrong?
- Too tight or uncomfortable: Contact your surgical team. A compression garment should not cut off circulation, according to Cleveland Clinic.
- Swelling prevents it from fitting: Call the clinic for guidance instead of forcing it. Memorial Sloan Kettering gives this advice in instructions for liposuction used to treat advanced-stage lymphedema; that is a distinct clinical context, not a general cosmetic-surgery protocol: Liposuction for Advanced-Stage Lymphedema.
- Considering a replacement: Ask your surgeon to approve the garment and fit. Check that it suits the treated area, can be put on as directed, and works with any dressings or drains. Do not assume a retail garment is equivalent to the one provided or prescribed.
Questions to ask your surgical team
- When may I remove this garment, and for what purposes?
- How should I handle the faja around my incisions, dressings, or drains?
- When may I shower, and when should the bandages come off?
- How long should I wear the garment, and what should I do if it no longer fits comfortably?
- If I need a replacement, which style and fit do you approve?
