You can add music without opening iTunes on some iPods, but there is no universal alternative. On Windows, Apple documents syncing through the Apple Devices app for supported iPods; on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, syncing is generally handled in Finder. Apple specifically says iPod classic, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle require iTunes to add content. Check your model before following any steps.
First, identify your iPod
- iPod classic, nano, or shuffle: Apple says these models must be synced with iTunes; there is no other way to add content. See Apple’s iTunes syncing guide.
- iPod touch: Depending on your computer and operating system, Apple’s documented route may be Apple Devices on Windows or Finder on a current Mac. The available instructions do not establish that those routes work for every iPod model or configuration.
“Without iTunes” can mean using another Apple-provided syncing interface on a supported setup. It does not mean that every iPod can be treated as a USB drive and given music by dragging files into a folder.

On Windows: sync through Apple Devices
Apple’s Windows guide uses the Apple Devices app and requires the Apple Music app to be installed. It supports connecting by USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi. The guide describes syncing music to an iPod, but Apple’s separate model-specific instructions still say classic, nano, and shuffle require iTunes; do not assume Apple Devices replaces iTunes for those models.
Recommended Free Tools
- Install the Apple Music app and Apple Devices app on your Windows PC.
- Connect the iPod by USB/USB-C, or use Wi-Fi if the device and setup support it.
- Open Apple Devices and select your iPod.
- Select Music, then turn on Sync music onto [device name].
- Choose to sync your entire music library or select artists, albums, genres, or playlists.
- Select Apply to start syncing. When finished, eject the iPod from the sidebar before disconnecting it.
Apple warns that with automatic syncing, deleting a synced item from the Windows device removes it from the Apple device at the next sync. Review the selected library and sync settings before applying changes. Apple’s complete steps and limitations are in its Windows music-sync guide.

On a Mac: the route depends on macOS and model
Apple’s general computer-sync instructions say to use Finder on macOS Catalina or later, and iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier. Those broad directions do not override Apple’s specific rule that classic, nano, and shuffle require iTunes to add content. For an iPod touch on a supported setup, connect it, select it in Finder, and use the relevant content-sync controls. See Apple’s computer-sync instructions for the macOS distinction.
Which music can you sync?
These computer-sync steps are for music you can legitimately sync from your library, such as compatible local audio files or purchased music. Apple Music subscription downloads are different: Apple says subscription songs cannot be synced through the described computer-sync method. Its Windows guide also says this method is unavailable unless Sync Library is turned off. A subscription download should not be treated as an ordinary transferable audio file.

Check the connector before connecting
Apple’s Windows instructions allow a wired USB/USB-C connection or Wi-Fi. If you need a cable, check the exact iPod model and port first: later-generation iPod touch models use Lightning, while other iPod models use a 30-pin connector, according to Associated Press reporting. A compatible cable only provides a connection; it does not make a model work with an unsupported syncing method.

If the music does not appear
- The iPod is classic, nano, or shuffle: Use iTunes to add content, as Apple specifies for these models.
- You are using Apple Music subscription tracks: The computer-sync route does not transfer subscription songs. Choose music you can sync from your library instead.
- The device is not listed: Check the cable and connection, then confirm you opened the right app for your computer and operating system. On Windows, Apple’s documented workflow uses Apple Devices with Apple Music installed.
- A sync would remove tracks: Check the Windows library and automatic-sync selection before applying; Apple says removed items are taken off the device at the next sync.
