A Commuter case has a different assembly order. Before either one, check that the case is specifically for the standard Galaxy S21 5G—not the S21+, S21 Ultra, or S21 FE.
Check that the case fits your exact Galaxy S21
Samsung’s S21 family includes distinct models: Galaxy S21 5G, Galaxy S21+ 5G, Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, and Galaxy S21 FE. OtterBox lists separate case products for these models, so do not assume that a case for one fits another. Check both the phone model and the case packaging or product listing before you install it. OtterBox’s product records list Commuter and Defender cases for Galaxy S21 5G, with separate entries for the other S21-family phones: OtterBox product and SKU records.
Install an OtterBox Defender case
Defender uses a two-piece inner shell and a removable outer slipcover. Follow this sequence from OtterBox’s general Defender Series phone instructions; that guide is not identified as a Galaxy S21-specific revision: Defender Series Installation Instructions.
- If your case is in its holster, remove it from the holster.
- Peel the outer slipcover away from the shell and set it aside.
- Find the marked arrows on the shell and release the side snaps to separate the shell halves.
- Place the phone into the bottom half of the shell.
- Set the top half over the phone. Snap the two halves together along all edges.
- Wrap the slipcover around the assembled shell. Seat its edges in the grooves and notches on every side.
Before using the case, check that the shell is snapped together all around and that the slipcover sits evenly in its grooves and notches.

Install an OtterBox Commuter case
Commuter uses a slipcover and a hard outer shell, rather than Defender’s two-piece inner shell. The available OtterBox installation guide is for Galaxy S23, not Galaxy S21, so treat its sequence as general Commuter guidance rather than an S21-specific instruction: Galaxy S23 Commuter Series Installation Instructions.
- Separate the slipcover from the hard outer shell.
- Wrap the slipcover around the phone.
- Fit the hard shell over the slipcover, starting at the bottom. Make sure the charging-port door passes through the opening in the shell.
- Press around the edges to seat the shell over the slipcover.
Check the fit
Inspect the perimeter to confirm the shell is seated over the slipcover and the charging-port door is positioned through the shell opening. If the pieces do not align, take the case off and check that you have the Galaxy S21 5G version before trying again.

Screen protection is a separate choice
A screen protector is not part of the case-installation steps in OtterBox’s cited instructions. OtterBox lists an optional Alpha Flex screen protector for Galaxy S21 5G; it is a separate accessory, not a requirement for fitting the case.
