Put your smart TV on an isolated guest or IoT network if your router supports one, and turn off access to the internal network. The TV should still be able to reach streaming services, while having less ability to communicate with phones, computers, and other devices on your main Wi-Fi. Check the router you already own before shopping for anything; the setting’s name and availability depend on its model and firmware.
What isolation changes—and what it does not
Device isolation creates a boundary between the TV and devices on your primary home network. On supported systems, an isolated device can retain internet access while being blocked from communicating with devices on the home network. TP-Link describes its Deco isolation feature this way, while noting that support depends on the system and firmware: TP-Link’s device-isolation instructions.

This can reduce the TV’s access to other household devices, but it is not a privacy setting on the TV and does not establish that every smart TV is a bandwidth hog, security threat, or tracker. TP-Link says some IoT devices may use substantial bandwidth; that is the vendor’s rationale for the feature, not a measurement showing that smart TVs generally slow home networks.

- Find the TV in your router’s client list. Open the router’s app or administration interface and identify the connected television. Names and menu locations vary, so use the support page for your exact router rather than assuming a universal path.
- Look for isolation controls. Search the router’s app or documentation for “device isolation,” “guest network,” or “IoT network.” Some routers let you deny guest devices access to the intranet or internal network. ASUS documents this option for supported products and firmware: ASUS guest-network intranet access instructions.
- Enable the boundary, not just a separate network name. If the router offers a setting such as “access intranet” or “access local network,” disable it for the TV’s guest or isolated network. Confirm the documentation says the TV will remain able to access the internet.
- Reconnect the TV to that network. Use the TV’s network settings to join the guest or IoT Wi-Fi instead of the primary network. If the router’s control applies isolation to a selected device directly, follow its instructions for that feature.
- Check the functions you use. Confirm that streaming works, then try casting, a phone-based remote, or access to media stored on another home device if you rely on them. These local-network features may stop working because the TV can no longer communicate with devices on the primary network.
When casting or local control stops working
That can be an expected effect of isolation, not a fault with the TV. Casting, device discovery, phone remote apps, and shared-media access can depend on communication between devices on the local network. If a function you need no longer works, consult the router’s instructions for whether it can allow that traffic selectively. If it cannot, you may need to choose between the isolation boundary and that local feature; do not assume that disabling isolation will affect internet streaming in the same way.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Handle viewing-data settings separately
Network isolation controls which local devices the TV can reach. It does not opt the TV out of collecting or sending viewing-related data to online services. Open the TV’s privacy preferences and look for settings described as automatic content recognition (ACR), viewing information, or similar; names and locations vary by manufacturer.
Samsung says its optional ACR feature, when enabled, may use viewing history, TV identifiers, and IP address, and that users can change preferences in TV settings. That description applies to Samsung’s feature, not every manufacturer: Samsung’s ACR support page.

- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
In controlled tests of named 2025 models, RTINGS observed identifiable ACR-related traffic patterns on the Samsung S95F, Sony Bravia 8 II, and LG G5; traffic changed or stopped after consent was withdrawn or the setting was switched off. On the TCL QM8K, the testers could not isolate an obvious ACR-specific flow, and blocking shared endpoints could affect unrelated services. Most traffic was encrypted, and these observations describe the tested devices and conditions rather than all TVs: RTINGS’ smart-TV data privacy testing.

Blocking a domain or IP address is not a reliable universal way to stop a TV’s viewing-data traffic. An endpoint may support more than one feature, so blocking it can break unrelated services. IoT devices may also use public or encrypted DNS in ways that complicate network-level DNS policies. The IETF’s RFC 9726, published in March 2025, discusses these operational issues; it does not provide a guaranteed consumer smart-TV blocklist.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If you experiment with filtering, change one rule at a time and check the TV’s streaming and other functions afterward. Router isolation is aimed at limiting local-network access; privacy preferences address the TV’s viewing-data settings. Neither control should be mistaken for the other. NIST’s NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, sets out recommended cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade routers; it is broader router guidance, not a smart-TV-specific study.
