To push a Docker image to a private registry, tag it with the registry’s hostname (and port when required), log in to that same host, then push the fully qualified tag:
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
docker tag SOURCE_IMAGE[:TAG] REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]/NAMESPACE/REPOSITORY[:TAG]
docker login REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]
docker image push REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]/NAMESPACE/REPOSITORY[:TAG]
If the hostname is missing, Docker interprets the name as Docker Hub. Most unauthorized errors result from logging in to a different host, lacking permission for the target repository, or receiving a token without the required push scope.

What you need before pushing
Have these details ready:
- A local image name and tag, such as
myapp:1.4.2, or an image ID. - The exact registry hostname, including a non-default port such as
:5000. - The namespace and repository path you are allowed to write to.
- Credentials or a token with push permission.
- A Docker daemon that can reach the registry and trust its TLS certificate.
A registry may be on your network, in a hosted service, or behind a load balancer. The client-side sequence is the same, but the provider’s login command, token format, repository creation process, and permission names can differ.
Understand the image name Docker will push
Docker image references use this form:
[HOST[:PORT]/]NAMESPACE/REPOSITORY[:TAG]
HOST is the registry endpoint. The optional PORT is part of the endpoint when the registry listens somewhere other than its standard HTTPS port. NAMESPACE identifies an account, project, or organizational scope. REPOSITORY is the image repository, and TAG identifies a version such as 1.4.2 or production.

When HOST is omitted, Docker uses Docker Hub’s default registry behavior. Therefore, myapp:latest is not a private-registry destination. A private destination must look like registry.example.com/team/myapp:latest or registry.example.com:5000/team/myapp:latest.
Step 1: Find or build the local image
List local images and copy the repository, tag, or image ID exactly:
docker image ls
If you need to build the image first, build it with a local name:
docker build -t myapp:1.4.2 .
The source image and destination image are separate tags that can point to the same local image layers. You do not need to rebuild merely because the destination registry changes.
Step 2: Tag the image with the complete registry reference
Use docker tag to add the destination reference:
docker tag SOURCE_IMAGE[:TAG] REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]/NAMESPACE/REPOSITORY[:TAG]
For example, an image ID can be tagged for a registry listening on port 5000:
docker tag 0e557428339 myregistryhost:5000/fedora/httpd:version1.0
Or tag a named local image:
docker tag myapp:1.4.2 registry.example.com/platform/myapp:1.4.2
Check the result before pushing:
docker image ls
Look for the complete destination string in the REPOSITORY and TAG columns. The registry host, port, namespace, repository, and tag must all match the path you intend to publish. A typo creates a different tag and can send the image to an unintended repository.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 3: Log in to the same registry host
Authenticate against the host that appears before the first slash in the image tag:
docker login REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]
For the previous examples, use:
docker login myregistryhost:5000
docker login registry.example.com
Do not add the namespace or repository to the login target unless your registry provider explicitly requires a different syntax. The important comparison is literal: the host and port in docker login must match the host and port in the image reference.
Use a password or token without exposing it in shell history
For scripts and CI jobs, send the secret through standard input:

printf '%s' "$REGISTRY_TOKEN" | docker login registry.example.com --username "$REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
Docker stores credentials in a configured credential store when one is available. Without a credential store, Docker writes them to config.json in base64-encoded form; base64 is encoding, not encryption. Protect that file, prefer the operating system or CI credential helper, and use short-lived or narrowly scoped tokens where the registry supports them.

Push the exact tag you created:
docker image push REGISTRY_HOST[:PORT]/NAMESPACE/REPOSITORY[:TAG]
Example:
docker image push registry.example.com/platform/myapp:1.4.2
Docker checks which layers already exist in the destination and uploads only missing layers. The output normally lists layer status and ends with a manifest digest. Save that digest when you need an immutable identifier for deployment or an audit record.
What a successful push tells you
- Lines marked as already existing indicate that the registry already has those layer blobs.
- Uploaded layers indicate new content was transferred.
- The final digest identifies the pushed manifest and its content address.
A successful upload does not mean a different tag was updated. If the output appears to target the wrong location, stop and compare the command with docker image ls before deploying or deleting anything.
Layer uploads, retries, and bandwidth
Docker can upload multiple missing layers concurrently. The push reference documents a default of five concurrent layer uploads, although this is a daemon implementation default and can vary with configuration or Docker version. A slow connection, proxy, registry limit, or large number of layers can therefore make a push appear stalled even while transfers are progressing. Let interrupted pushes retry after correcting the underlying network or authentication issue; layers that reached the registry are normally reused rather than uploaded again.
Why Docker says “unauthorized”
Registry version 2 authentication commonly begins with a 401 Unauthorized response containing a WWW-Authenticate challenge. Docker then contacts the authorization service named by that challenge, requests a bearer token, and retries the registry operation. The token must contain the repository actions required by the request, including push permission for an upload.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That flow narrows the likely causes of an authorization failure:
You logged in to a different host
Logging in to registry.example.com does not authenticate you to registry.example.com:5000, another hostname, or an IP address unless the registry and credential configuration deliberately treat them as the same endpoint. Repeat login using the exact host-and-port string in the tag.
Your account cannot write to the repository
A valid login can still lack permission for a namespace or repository. Ask the registry administrator to grant the account push access to the exact path, such as platform/myapp. A permission for platform does not necessarily grant access to every nested path; the registry’s policy model determines that behavior.
The token has insufficient scope
The registry’s token service may issue a token that permits pulling but not pushing, or permits a different repository. Refresh the token and verify that its scope includes the target repository and the push action. In CI, check that the job is using the intended secret rather than a stale or read-only credential.

The repository path is not the one you were granted
Repository names are part of authorization. Compare the destination in the tag character by character with the path shown in the registry’s access policy. A spelling or capitalization difference can produce an authorization error even when authentication succeeds.
Fix TLS and certificate failures separately
TLS both authenticates the registry endpoint and encrypts traffic between the Docker client and registry. A certificate or trust error happens before repository authorization, so changing passwords will not fix it.
For a publicly trusted certificate
- Use a certificate whose name matches the registry hostname clients use.
- Ensure the certificate chain is complete and not expired.
- Make sure the Docker host’s trust store contains the issuing authority when required by your operating system or daemon configuration.
For a private certificate authority
Install the organization’s issuing CA where the Docker daemon trusts registry certificates, then restart or reload the daemon according to your platform’s procedure. The exact directory and service action vary by operating system and Docker installation, so follow the daemon’s current certificate guidance.
For mutual TLS
If the registry requires client certificates, configure the client certificate and private key for the Docker daemon or registry endpoint as documented by the registry operator. The client certificate must be valid for the endpoint and permitted by the registry’s policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not disable TLS verification as a routine workaround. That removes endpoint authentication and exposes credentials and image data to interception. Fix the hostname, certificate chain, CA trust, or client-certificate configuration instead.
Push to a registry on port 5000
A non-standard port must appear in every relevant command:
docker tag myapp:1.4.2 registry.example.com:5000/team/myapp:1.4.2
docker login registry.example.com:5000
docker image push registry.example.com:5000/team/myapp:1.4.2
Omitting :5000 changes the destination to the registry endpoint’s default port and can make Docker contact a different service. If the registry is reachable only inside a private network, verify DNS resolution and firewall access from the machine running the Docker daemon, not merely from your web browser.
Why Docker tries Docker Hub instead
Docker defaults to Docker Hub when an image reference has no registry host. These commands therefore do not target a private registry:

docker image push myapp:latest
Retag with the full destination first:
docker tag myapp:latest registry.example.com/team/myapp:latest
docker image push registry.example.com/team/myapp:latest
Inspect the local list before pushing. If the repository column contains only myapp, the registry host is missing. If it contains the intended host and port, push that fully qualified row rather than the unqualified source tag.

Repository creation and namespace requirements
Some registries create repositories automatically on the first authorized push; others require an administrator or project owner to create the repository first. Check the provider’s rule before treating a “repository does not exist” or “denied” response as a Docker tagging problem. In either model, the namespace and repository path in the tag must be one that your account or token is permitted to use.
Do not assume that a successful login grants access to every project on a registry. Read and write permissions can be separate, and a service account may be restricted to one repository. Create or request the exact path, then test with a deliberately versioned tag rather than overwriting a production tag during setup.
Managed registries: what changes and what does not
Hosted registries add provider-specific authentication and permissions, but the image flow remains:
- Authenticate the Docker client to the provider’s registry endpoint.
- Tag the local image with that endpoint, repository, and tag.
- Push the fully qualified tag.
Amazon ECR’s documented procedure follows this same sequence. Its credential acquisition and authorization details are provider-specific, so use the current provider documentation for the login command, token lifetime, repository policy, and required identity permissions. Apply the same discipline to any other hosted registry: never substitute a generic password command when the service requires a generated token or cloud identity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a private registry using the right criteria
If you are selecting a service or operating your own registry, compare the controls around the Docker client workflow rather than looking only at the login screen.
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Authentication | Does it use passwords, access tokens, an identity provider, or workload identities? Can tokens be limited to one repository and action? |
| Authorization | Can you grant push and pull separately at namespace, repository, or project level? |
| TLS and exposure | Is the endpoint publicly reachable, private, or restricted by network policy? How are certificates issued, rotated, and trusted by Docker daemons? |
| Storage and egress | How are storage, transfer, and outbound downloads charged or limited? |
| Retention and garbage collection | Can untagged manifests and old layers be retained or removed safely, and can retention rules be audited? |
| Scanning and signing | Are vulnerability scans, provenance records, or signature verification available in the deployment path? |
| CI/CD integration | Can jobs obtain short-lived credentials and push without storing a personal password? |
| Availability and support | What redundancy, recovery objectives, support channel, and service commitments apply? |
Provider commands, pricing, token lifetimes, and retention behavior change over time. Treat those as service-specific settings and verify them in the provider’s current documentation before automating production pushes.
Automate a safe push in CI
A minimal pipeline should keep the registry host in one variable, authenticate non-interactively, build or identify the image, tag it once, and push that exact tag:
Recommended Free Tools
REGISTRY='registry.example.com'
IMAGE="$REGISTRY/platform/myapp:$GIT_COMMIT"
printf '%s' "$REGISTRY_TOKEN" | docker login "$REGISTRY" --username "$REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
docker build -t myapp:build .
docker tag myapp:build "$IMAGE"
docker image push "$IMAGE"
Use your CI system’s secret store for the username and token. Avoid printing secrets, writing them to artifacts, or embedding them in the image. Prefer an immutable tag derived from a commit or release identifier; if you also publish a moving tag such as stable, push it deliberately as a separate operation and record which immutable digest it currently represents.
Troubleshoot a failed push in order
- Read the endpoint in the error. Confirm it is the hostname and port you intended.
- Check the local tag. Run
docker image lsand verify the complete repository and tag. - Repeat login against that exact endpoint. Include the port when one is present.
- Check network reachability. Confirm DNS, routing, firewall rules, proxy settings, and registry availability from the Docker daemon host.
- Classify the failure. A certificate or handshake error is a TLS/trust problem;
401orunauthorizedis an authentication, token, or permission problem; a timeout or connection refusal is a network or service problem. - Verify repository authorization. Ensure the account or token can push to the exact namespace and repository, not merely pull or access a neighboring path.
- Retry the exact push. Use
docker image pushwith the fully qualified tag and inspect whether layers upload and a manifest digest is returned.
If a retry reports that layers already exist, that is normally expected: registries deduplicate content. It does not by itself indicate that the new manifest was accepted; confirm the final digest and inspect the repository through its administrative interface or API.
Best Value
After the push: verify and deploy by digest
Record the repository, tag, push time, and manifest digest from the command output. Tags are mutable labels; a later push can point the same tag at different content. For a deployment that must be reproducible, reference the digest supplied by the registry rather than relying only on a moving tag.
Keep the source tag and destination tag visible in build logs, but never log registry passwords or raw access tokens. When rotating credentials, update CI secrets and local credential stores, then test a push with the new token before revoking the old one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tag a Docker image for a private registry on port 5000?
Include the hostname and port in the tag, then use that identical endpoint for login and push:
docker tag myapp:1.4.2 registry.example.com:5000/team/myapp:1.4.2
docker login registry.example.com:5000
docker image push registry.example.com:5000/team/myapp:1.4.2
Why does Docker push say unauthorized after I logged in?
Check that the login host and port exactly match the image tag, that your account can push to the target namespace and repository, and that the registry token includes push scope for that repository. A valid login may provide pull access only.
Why is Docker trying Docker Hub instead of my private registry?
The image reference is unqualified. Names such as myapp:latest omit the registry host and therefore use Docker Hub’s default behavior. Retag the image with registry.example.com/team/myapp:latest and push that fully qualified tag.
Do I need to rebuild an image before pushing it to another registry?
No. Add a destination tag with docker tag; the source and destination tags can point to the same local image and layers. Rebuild only when the image contents need to change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does a 401 challenge mean during a registry push?
A Registry v2 endpoint commonly returns 401 Unauthorized with a WWW-Authenticate challenge. Docker requests a bearer token from the indicated authorization service and retries. The token must authorize the requested repository and include the push action.
Can I disable TLS verification to get a push working?
Do not use that as a routine fix. Correct the registry hostname, certificate name and chain, trusted CA installation, or mutual-TLS client certificate. Disabling verification removes endpoint authentication and can expose credentials and image data.
Why does a push say that layers already exist?
The registry already stores those content-addressed layers, so Docker skips re-uploading them. Confirm that the final manifest digest is returned; existing layers alone do not prove that the new tag or manifest was accepted.
How should a CI job authenticate to a private registry?
Use the CI secret store and pass a token through standard input with docker login --password-stdin. Keep the registry host in one variable, tag with an immutable build identifier, push that exact reference, and avoid printing credentials.
