You can publish to Medium without a Chrome extension: import an existing public article using Medium’s Import a story tool, paste text into a new Medium draft, or write directly in Medium’s editor or mobile app. The right option depends on whether your content already exists online, in a document, or is still being written.
Choose a workflow based on where your content lives
| Starting point | Best route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| An article already published on a public webpage | Medium’s Import a story tool | Fastest native option, though the imported draft may need editing and you must have rights to use the content. |
| A webpage that will not import correctly, or a document file | Copy and paste into a Medium draft | You may need to repair formatting and restore images or embeds. |
| A new article or work in progress | Medium’s web editor, or its iOS or Android app on mobile | Your draft lives in Medium; writing is not supported in mobile browsers. |
| A goal of reaching another editorial audience | Submit the story to a suitable Medium publication | Rules and editorial decisions vary; submission is not automatic publication. |
| A newly created external publishing integration | Do not count on Medium’s API as a general replacement | Medium says it does not issue new integration tokens or allow new integrations. |
Import an article that is already online
Medium’s built-in importer is for a webpage URL, not a Word document or PDF. In Medium, open Stories, choose Import a story, paste the page URL, and import it. Review the resulting draft, make any necessary edits, and publish it from Medium. Medium’s importing instructions say the tool automatically backdates the story to its original publication date and adds a canonical link to the original page.

Only import material you have the right to use. The importer creates a draft for you to review; it does not remove your responsibility to check the text, images, formatting, and source relationship before publishing.

Medium says its importer relies on a third-party service to interpret a webpage. If that service cannot read the page, the import may produce a blank result or an error. The fallback is to create a Medium draft and copy and paste the text, then restore any missing images or embeds and fix the formatting in the editor. If needed, you can set a canonical link manually. Medium’s import help page also says it does not support uploading a Word document, PDF, or other file and converting it directly into a story.

Write and publish in Medium itself
For a new story or ongoing work, use Medium’s web editor. It saves drafts automatically, and you can return to them from the Stories page. The publishing menu includes optional settings such as topics and scheduling. Medium directs mobile writers to its iOS or Android app; it says writing is not supported in mobile browsers. See Medium’s guide to writing a post for its current editor instructions.
Why a new API integration is not a dependable alternative
Medium’s API/Importing help page states: “Medium will not be issuing any new integration tokens for our API and will not allow any new integrations.” It also says existing tokens continue to work. That means a service that depends on a newly created API integration is not a broadly available replacement for an extension. If you already have an integration using an existing token, its continued operation is a different case from setting up a new one.

Use a publication for editorial reach, not automation
If your aim is to reach readers beyond your own followers, consider submitting the story to a Medium publication. Each publication sets its own eligibility and submission rules, and some may not be accepting submissions. Editors decide whether a story fits, so submission is a route to editorial consideration—not a way to automate publishing. Medium explains the process in its publication submission guidance and its information on writing for publications.
