How to Publish Image Templates: Canva, Adobe Stock, Figma, and Direct Sales

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right way to publish an image template depends on where people will use it. A public marketplace listing, a Canva template link sold to customers, an Adobe Stock submission, and an internal Figma asset have different file, licensing, access, and maintenance rules. Choose the destination first, then prepare an editable file, rights-cleared assets, previews, metadata, and a delivery or publishing path that matches that destination.

Choose what “publish” means for your template

Before exporting anything, decide which audience and business model you are targeting:

Route Best for What you publish Important constraints
Canva Template Creator marketplace Public discovery inside Canva A template created and published through Canva after acceptance You apply with a portfolio. Canva describes the program as beta and says accepted creators can receive royalties when users use their templates. Check whether applications are open at Canva’s creator page.
Sell an editable Canva template yourself Direct customers from your shop, newsletter, or site A Canva template link, especially when Pro Content is included Canva says designs must be original, Canva content cannot be resold standalone, and designs containing Pro Content may be sold only as Canva template links—not PDFs or other file types. See the Canva Content License Agreement.
Adobe Stock contributor Submission to Adobe’s stock collection One ZIP package per template containing the editable template file, thumbnail, and preview Application-specific formats, metadata, preview dimensions, and file-size limits apply. Follow Adobe’s current requirements at Adobe Stock design-template requirements.
Figma team or organization Reusable internal presentation assets A source deck in a team folder, published to a team or organization audience Visibility depends on team, folder, account, and organization permissions.
Figma Community Public discovery and duplication by Figma Slides users A Community listing published from the Slides editor You need edit permission on a paid plan. Community slide templates use CC BY 4.0, and later edits do not update copies users already duplicated.

These destinations are not interchangeable. A file prepared for Adobe Stock is not automatically a customer-ready Canva product, and a private Figma team template is not a public marketplace listing.

Prepare the template before publishing

Design for editing, not just appearance

Use a clear visual hierarchy and make the intended edit zones obvious. Separate fixed structure—such as a logo area, margins, and background treatment—from customizable text, images, colors, and data. Name layers, pages, artboards, and components consistently. For team templates, lock elements that should not move and leave user-facing fields unlocked; Figma’s guidance on locking objects and publishing selected assets is documented in Figma’s template help.

  • Use descriptive layer or group names such as “Headline,” “Hero image,” and “Footer link,” rather than “Group 17.”
  • Keep text styles, colors, and spacing consistent so users can change content without rebuilding the layout.
  • Include a sample version that demonstrates the intended result, while making placeholder content easy to replace.
  • Check the template at the smallest likely viewing size and with long and short text; overflow is a common failure after publication.

Clear rights before you upload or sell

Use artwork, photos, fonts, icons, and logos that you own or are licensed to distribute in the exact way your destination permits. Canva says a design sold using Canva content must be original and prohibits selling Canva content on a standalone basis. Its contributor agreement also requires submitted stock media to be the contributor’s original work and calls for releases for identifiable people or property where applicable; review the agreement at Canva’s contributor agreement.

Keep a simple rights record for every non-original asset: source, license, permitted uses, attribution requirement, and any model or property release. A license that allows use in your own finished image may not allow redistribution inside an editable template.

Build previews that explain the product

Your thumbnail and preview should show the template in use, not merely a zoomed-in decoration. Include a realistic example, the number of layouts or pages, and the kind of customization a buyer or teammate can make. Avoid dates in evergreen designs; Adobe recommends using “20XX” rather than a specific year for reusable seasonal work.

Publish through Canva

Apply for the public Creator marketplace

  1. Prepare a portfolio showing a consistent standard across several template categories and styles.
  2. Open Canva’s creator application page and submit the portfolio and requested information.
  3. If accepted, create templates in Canva and use the publishing workflow supplied to your creator account.
  4. Write titles and descriptions around the user’s task—such as “real-estate listing carousel”—rather than internal project names.
  5. Check the public listing as a non-owner would see it, including thumbnail, editable areas, and search wording.

Canva describes royalties for accepted Template Creators when users use their templates. That is creator compensation, not evidence of an affiliate-referral program; verify current intake and terms before relying on earnings.

Sell a Canva template link directly

  1. Create the design in Canva and confirm that every included asset may be distributed in an editable template.
  2. If the design contains Pro Content, deliver it as a Canva template link rather than a PDF or another downloadable file type.
  3. In your sales system, provide a short instruction page: how to open the link, duplicate the design, replace content, and contact you.
  4. Test the link in a separate account or private browser session before sending it to customers.

Do not extract a Canva photo, illustration, or element and sell that asset by itself. Your product should be an original, usable composition.

Submit an image template to Adobe Stock

Use the required ZIP structure

Adobe’s technical page, last updated September 24, 2026, says each design-template submission should be an individual ZIP containing only the template file, a thumbnail, and a preview image. Confirm the exact authoring-application format and file-size cap on Adobe’s linked application requirements before uploading.

The established preview specifications are:

Item Requirement
Filename Preview1.jpg
Color space RGB
Width 2048 px
Height 1536–6144 px
Minimum resolution 72 ppi
  1. Clean the source file: remove unused layers, missing links, private notes, and identifying customer data.
  2. Organize and label layers, pages, and artboards so a buyer can understand the structure.
  3. Export the thumbnail in the format and dimensions Adobe requests for the application.
  4. Create the preview as RGB Preview1.jpg within the required height range.
  5. Place only the template file, thumbnail, and preview in a uniquely named ZIP.
  6. Upload the ZIP, add accurate title and keyword metadata, and submit it for review.

For seasonal work, Adobe recommends submitting two to three months before the event. Requirements can change, so verify the linked page immediately before each submission.

Publish a reusable template in Figma

Team or organization publishing

  1. Store the source deck in the team folder where the intended audience has access.
  2. Open the Slides publishing flow and choose the team or organization audience.
  3. Provide a descriptive name and explain in the description what users should edit, duplicate, or leave locked.
  4. Confirm folder and plan permissions with a test teammate account.

A template may be technically published yet invisible to the people who need it if the folder or organization policy blocks access. Treat permissions as part of the product.

Figma Community publishing

  1. Open the deck in Figma Slides with edit permission on a paid plan.
  2. Choose the Community publishing action, then add a useful title and directions in the description.
  3. Include support contact information and disclose any attribution users must retain.
  4. Publish and test the public listing and duplicate flow.

Figma states: “Slide deck templates published to Community are published under an Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.” Make that license visible to anyone who plans to adapt or redistribute the template. Updating your Community listing does not update copies users already duplicated.

A maintenance and quality checklist

  • Audience: Can the intended user find and open the template?
  • Editability: Are replacement fields obvious, and are protected elements locked?
  • Rights: Do you have permission for every distributed asset, font, and recognizable person or property?
  • Preview: Does the thumbnail show the real outcome and the use case?
  • Instructions: Does the description explain customization, dimensions, and required software?
  • Metadata: Are the title, category, keywords, and credits accurate?
  • Update behavior: Will edits reach existing users, or must you publish a new version?
  • Access test: Have you opened the result as a buyer, teammate, or public visitor rather than as the owner?

Capture preview images without manual browser work

If you need website screenshots for a listing, documentation page, or template preview, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try: it removes common consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan among the stated options.

Or skip the browser setup:

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Replace the URL with the page you want to show.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the complete options and response details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Troubleshooting common publication failures

The template is rejected for rights reasons

Remove assets whose licenses do not allow editable redistribution, obtain the necessary release, or replace them with original work. Keep proof of permission and do not assume a finished composition license covers source assets.

Customers cannot edit the Canva file

Verify that you sent a template link rather than an ordinary view or edit link, and test it while signed into a separate account. Explain the duplicate step in your delivery instructions.

Adobe rejects the ZIP or preview

Check that the ZIP contains only the required three items, that the preview is named exactly Preview1.jpg, uses RGB, is 2048 pixels wide, and is within the 1536–6144 pixel height range. Then verify the application-specific format and size limit.

Figma teammates cannot find the template

Check the source file’s team folder, plan eligibility, and folder permissions. Test with an account that has the same role as the intended user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Figma Community update did not reach users

That is expected for existing duplicates: published changes do not automatically modify copies. Publish a new version or notify users through the channel you control.

Monetization and policy cautions

Canva’s creator royalties and direct customer sales are different models. The official material does not establish current affiliate availability, commission rates, cookie duration, or signup terms for Canva, Adobe, or Figma. Do not promise earnings or acceptance rates. Recheck country availability, contributor intake, plans, licenses, and technical requirements immediately before publishing your own instructions or product listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I publish the same template on Canva, Adobe Stock, and Figma?

Only if your asset licenses, file formats, and each platform’s terms allow that distribution. Repackage the source for each destination and check whether any exclusive or platform-specific rule applies.

Should I include editable source files with a customer purchase?

Use the delivery format required by the platform. For Canva designs containing Pro Content, Canva says the permitted sale format is a Canva template link, not a downloadable source or PDF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What license applies to a Figma Community slide template?

Figma says Community slide templates are published under CC BY 4.0, so users who adapt or redistribute them should follow that attribution license.

The Bottom Line

Publish image templates by matching the file, rights, preview, access, and update model to the destination: Canva marketplace or links for Canva users, an individual ZIP for Adobe Stock, and permission-aware publishing for Figma. Test the result as the intended user, document your licenses, and verify volatile platform rules before launch.
