How to Protect Your Privacy When Using AI Wearables

AI wearables can involve local and cloud processing, optional AI and voice features, and nearby people captured on camera or microphone. Use these checks to limit data collection, manage deletion, secure your account, and record responsibly.

Protecting your privacy with an AI wearable starts with finding out what the device processes locally, what it sends to a cloud service, and which features you can turn off. Then limit unnecessary permissions, check retention and deletion controls, secure the account, and make recording clear to people nearby. The details vary by product and region: a setting on one device is not proof that another collects or handles data the same way.

Map what the wearable can collect and where it goes

AI wearables may use cameras, microphones, voice processing, biometrics, location, or cloud-based AI, but no single list applies to every device. Start with the product’s current privacy notice and companion-app settings. For each feature you plan to use, find out what information it needs and whether processing happens on the device, in the vendor’s cloud, or through another provider.

The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner’s guidance on wearables highlights the distinction between local processing and cloud services. Data that leaves a device may be subject to the vendor’s terms and the terms of any third-party service involved. Before enabling a feature, look for a clear explanation of what is transmitted, who receives it, why it is needed, and how long it is kept. If those answers are not clear, treat the feature as an unresolved privacy trade-off rather than assuming it works entirely on-device.

Ask these questions feature by feature

  • Does the feature need access to the camera, microphone, contacts, location, health data, or another category of information?
  • Does it work without an internet connection, or does a request go to a vendor or third-party cloud?
  • Can the feature be used without saving recordings, transcripts, or other account data?
  • Does turning it off stop collection or processing, or only stop a particular use such as sharing?

Limit permissions and optional features

Review permissions on both the wearable and the phone app it uses. Deny access that is not necessary for the functions you want, and revoke access later if your use changes. The Swiss authority puts the advice plainly: “Unnecessary access should always be refused or revoked in the settings.” An app may lose a convenience when a permission is denied; check the feature’s requirements instead of granting broad access by default.

Inspect controls for AI assistance, voice activation, recognition, notifications, captures, and information sharing. Turn off optional features whose data use you do not accept, then verify what the change actually disables. Controls and their effects are product-specific, and an off switch for one AI function should not be assumed to stop all recording, synchronization, or cloud processing.

As one product-specific example, Meta says its AI glasses app lets users set preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Those options describe Meta’s product, not a standard shared by all AI glasses; check the current product documentation because settings may change.

Check retention, deletion, and account access

Find out whether the product retains photos, video, audio, transcripts, AI prompts, diagnostic data, or account information, and for how long. Look for controls to review, download, and delete data. Read the deletion explanation carefully: removing a file from the wearable may differ from deleting a copy in the phone app, the account, or a cloud service.

The FTC’s consumer-protection work on voice data, including its 2023 discussion of Alexa, has raised concerns about retention, deletion practices, and access to sensitive recordings. That does not establish that every wearable has the same practices; it is a reason to check the actual service’s terms and controls. The FTC’s general guidance is to minimize data and delete it when there is no longer a legitimate need.

  • Look for an account-data download or access tool so you can review what the service holds.
  • Before deleting an account or cloud content, check whether the action also removes files you want to keep and whether copies remain elsewhere.

Give biometrics and recognition features extra scrutiny

Biometric information deserves more than a routine permission check. The FTC warns that biometric information and related technologies can create privacy and security concerns as well as risks of bias and discrimination. Its Bureau of Consumer Protection director, Samuel Levine, said in the agency’s May 2023 announcement: “In recent years, biometric surveillance has grown more sophisticated and pervasive, posing new threats to privacy and civil rights.”

Before enabling a biometric or recognition feature, determine what it identifies or infers, whether that processing is optional, where the relevant data is handled, and how to remove it. Do not assume a feature is harmless because it is marketed as a convenience, or that a face or voice template is treated like an ordinary setting. If the vendor does not explain the processing or deletion path clearly, leave the feature off unless you have a strong reason to use it.

Make recording visible and respect bystanders

Smart glasses and other wearables can capture images or sound, while people nearby may not realize recording is happening. Check how your device signals capture, and do not cover, disable, or defeat a recording indicator. An indicator can help communicate what is happening, but it does not replace notice, consent where required, or good judgment about where recording is appropriate.

Meta says that taking photos or recording video for a gallery or streaming activates notification and capture LEDs on its AI glasses. That is a product-specific statement, not a guarantee about other devices or every current model. A 2024 report from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, describing its earlier engagement with Meta about Ray-Ban smart glasses, says the external-facing privacy LED size was more than doubled. That historical design change does not establish the indicator on every current model or settle the broader question of bystander privacy.

  • Before recording, streaming, or sharing someone else’s image or voice, check the rules that apply where you are and consider the person’s expectations.

Keep the device, app, and account protected

Install software and companion-app updates promptly, use a strong account password, and enable additional account protection if the service offers it. The Swiss authority identifies long-term security updates, prompt vulnerability remediation, and encryption in transit as important manufacturer practices. Those are useful questions to ask when choosing or continuing to use a wearable; they are not assurances that a particular model has a specific update schedule or security design.

Also consider what happens if the glasses, watch, or paired phone is lost. Use available lock and account-recovery controls, and review whether someone with physical access could view saved recordings or use the account. The practical exposure can involve both the device and the services linked to it.

Apply the rules for your location and use

Privacy law depends on where you are, what you record, who is doing the recording, and how the data is used or shared. The European Data Protection Board identifies AI, facial recognition, connected vehicles, and the Internet of Things as areas that rely substantially on personal data and bring privacy and security challenges; its discussion of privacy by design and by default is useful context, not a substitute for checking applicable law.

Rules can also be specific to a country or recording context. The Philippines National Privacy Commission announced Circular No. 2025-01 for personal data collected by body-worn cameras and similar recording devices. Its announcement says the circular took effect on 10 June 2025 and addresses matters including lawful processing, security, storage, access control, retention, notices, and creators who record or publish people. This is jurisdiction-specific and should not be treated as the rule everywhere.

Do not assume that HIPAA automatically covers a consumer wearable or its app. FTC guidance for mobile health app developers discusses HIPAA and the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule in relation to covered businesses and health apps; whether a particular wearable service is covered depends on the entity and service. For a health-related use, check the service’s privacy terms and the rules that apply to that service and location.

A practical privacy check before you use an AI wearable

  1. Read the current device privacy notice and companion-app settings before enabling optional features.
  2. For each feature you want, identify the data it needs, whether it is processed locally or sent to a cloud service, and any third party involved.
  3. Deny or revoke permissions the chosen functions do not need.
  4. Turn off optional AI, voice, recognition, or sharing features if their data use is unacceptable, and confirm what the setting actually stops.
  5. Find the retention period, data-access or download tools, deletion controls, and the difference between removing a local file and deleting account or cloud data.
  6. Check the capture indicator, keep it unobstructed, and make recording clear to people where appropriate.
  7. Keep the wearable and its app updated, protect the linked account, and check local rules before recording or sharing other people’s images or voices.
