To protect your privacy on a health-tracking wearable, work through five things. Find out what the device and its app collect. Switch off optional features you don’t use. Limit which apps and people can see your data. Lock down the account. Learn how export and deletion work before you need them. Don’t assume HIPAA covers a consumer wearable app. Whether it does depends on the service and where the data flows.
Step 1: Map where your data goes
A wearable’s data rarely stays on the wrist. It usually passes through the tracker, a phone app, a cloud account and sometimes connected third-party apps or providers. Write down each link in your own setup.

What gets collected depends on the product and configuration. Google’s privacy FAQ for Google Health lists possible categories. They include steps, distance, calories, weight, heart rate, sleep stages, active minutes, data from connected services, location for some features, and usage and diagnostic information. Google says practices vary by device, service and configuration, so check the documentation for your own model.

Step 2: Review app permissions by data type
Grant each app only the categories it needs for the feature you use. Revoke access you no longer use.
On Apple devices, Apple’s September 2025 privacy overview says that by default no Health information is shared with third-party apps. You can grant access by data type and revoke it later in Settings > Privacy & Security > Health. Menu labels can change between software versions, so look for the equivalent if yours differs.
Apple also provides controls for the people and healthcare organizations you choose to share with, as described in its Health app and privacy page. Review these lists occasionally and stop sharing with anyone who no longer needs access.
Step 3: Turn off optional features and unneeded location access
Optional features can involve extra collection or processing. Read the explanation before you enable one, and turn off any you don’t use. Google says users can manage optional features in Google Health, which is now the name of the Fitbit app. Its FAQ says precise location collection depends on the access you grant for select features.

If a feature doesn’t need location, deny location permission. You can usually turn it back on later for a specific activity.
Step 4: Secure the account and check sharing
- Use a unique password that you don’t reuse on other services.
- Turn on two-step authentication where it’s offered. Google lists it as available for Google Health accounts.
- Review everyone and everything with access: linked apps, family or friend sharing, and healthcare organizations.
Step 5: Export and delete deliberately
Both major platforms provide controls here. Google offers export and delete options for your data. Apple describes export and deletion in its Health documentation.
- Export a copy first if you want to keep your history.
- Use the service’s data deletion or account deletion flow if you want it gone.
- Check connected apps, backups and recipients. Deletion in one place may not erase copies elsewhere.
Deleting an app is not the same as deleting your data. Apple states that deleting the Health app does not delete health data from the device. It also doesn’t automatically remove access you previously granted to apps or recipients. Revoke those permissions separately.

Apple
Apple says Health can consolidate information from Apple Watch and other sources, and that you control what is stored and shared. It describes encryption of Health data when the device is locked, plus optional iCloud backup and sync. Encryption and cloud details depend on your settings and account configuration. The overview’s wording on sharing is simple: “By default, no information is shared.”

Google Health (Fitbit)
Google says it “committed to not use Fitbit users’ health and wellness data for Google Ads.” That is Google’s own policy statement. It is not an independent audit, and it doesn’t mean no other processing happens. Your safeguards remain the feature, permission and account controls above.
These sources don’t support a ranking of wearable brands on privacy. If you compare devices, compare them on these points:
- Which data categories are collected, and which features are optional
- Sharing defaults and how granular app permissions are
- Cloud, backup and account security controls
- How export, deletion and retention work
- How connected services and legal requests are disclosed
Does HIPAA protect your wearable data?
Not automatically. The FTC’s health privacy guidance points to HIPAA, the FTC Act and the Health Breach Notification Rule as possible sources of obligations. Which one applies depends on the organization and how the data flows. The FTC’s mobile health app tool says many apps outside HIPAA can still fall under the Health Breach Notification Rule. This is more likely when they pull information from several sources, such as a connected tracker. Whether the rule applies depends on specific facts. This is general US context, not legal advice about any particular service.
