To protect your privacy with a Galaxy SmartTag3, review Unknown Tag Alerts in SmartThings Find, use its manual unknown-tag search if you suspect a tracker is following you, and limit the contact details you put in Lost Mode. Samsung says SmartTag3 location data is encrypted and location history is kept for up to seven days, but unknown-tag detection is conditional—not a guarantee that every tracking attempt will be found.
What SmartTag3’s privacy protections do—and do not establish
Samsung says SmartTag3 location data is encrypted to help protect user privacy. That is Samsung’s description of the feature, not an independent security audit; it does not, by itself, establish the encryption design, who can decrypt data, or how all account information is retained. Samsung’s October 2026 announcement also says location history is stored for up to seven days, after which older records are automatically deleted.

For unwanted tracking, SmartThings Find offers Unknown Tag Alerts and a manual search for unknown tags. Samsung’s product FAQ says detection applies only to unknown Galaxy SmartTags that have been disconnected from their owner’s device for a period of time. The sources do not establish that every unknown tag, or every attempt to track someone, will be detected. Samsung’s SmartTag3 FAQ describes the limitation.
Check Unknown Tag Alerts and run a manual search
- Open SmartThings and find the Find service. Look for Unknown Tag Alerts in its current settings and check that the feature is enabled. Samsung’s earlier instructions placed the setting in the app’s Life tab, but app navigation can change. Samsung’s SmartThings Find announcement describes that earlier path.
- If you are concerned that an unknown tracker is nearby, use the manual option labelled Search for unknown tags near you, if it is available in your app. Samsung describes this as a way to look for tags nearby; an inconclusive search does not prove that no tracker is present.
Alerts and searches depend on the tag’s connection state, device and feature availability, and surrounding conditions. Samsung says only tags disconnected from their owner’s device for some time can be detected. Treat an alert as useful information, not a complete detection system; the absence of an alert is not proof that you are not being tracked.

Understand the information and alerts associated with your tag
Lost Mode can reveal the details you register
Lost Mode lets the owner register a message and contact information in SmartThings. A person who finds and scans the tag may see that information if their device supports NFC reading and has an internet connection. Before enabling Lost Mode, choose contact details you are comfortable sharing with a finder; turn Lost Mode off when it is no longer needed, as Samsung recommends. Samsung’s announcement and product FAQ describe these conditions.
Location history is a short, but meaningful, record
Samsung says SmartTag3 location history is retained for up to seven days, with older records automatically deleted. Consider that history when deciding whether to use the tag and who can access the associated SmartThings account. The stated retention period is Samsung’s published product information; it is not a description of every type of account or service data.

Movement and proximity notifications have dependencies
Samsung says Movement Detection Alert works when the tag is disconnected from its owner’s device and relies on signals detected by nearby Galaxy devices that have agreed to Offline finding. Notification timing or delivery can vary with nearby-device availability, network, settings, and surroundings; Samsung says alerts may be delayed or not received.
- Place Notification is described by Samsung as a trial feature.
- Left Behind Alert depends on the tag’s connection to the owner’s device and may produce false alerts.
Check device, platform, and market compatibility
SmartTag3 features are not universal across phones or regions. Samsung says Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS; availability can also vary by device and market. Do not assume Samsung’s Galaxy-specific unknown-tag controls or other SmartTag3 features work the same way on every Android phone or iPhone. Samsung announced initial availability in Korea beginning October 7, 2026, followed by the United States, with additional markets to follow in 2027; those were announced plans, not confirmation of availability in every market. See Samsung’s product announcement for its stated rollout and compatibility details.
