In the United States, a nonconsensual intimate image—including an AI-generated depiction—can qualify for a federal platform-removal process. A fake endorsement, cloned voice, or other impersonation generally does not qualify for that same process; state law and the specific facts matter.
Which kind of AI likeness misuse are you dealing with?
The first step is to identify the content and the harm. The federal TAKE IT DOWN Act addresses intentional disclosure of nonconsensual intimate visual depictions. It is not a general rule requiring every website to remove any image, voice, or impersonation that uses someone’s likeness.

This is a U.S.-focused guide. Protections outside the United States—and the details of state law within it—depend on jurisdiction and facts. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, Part 1: Digital Replicas Report describes the right of publicity as a potentially apt state-law remedy for unauthorized digital replicas, while noting that its contours differ considerably among states.

1. Report it to the platform and keep a record
Use the post’s report control or the platform’s support process to submit a removal request. The platform must make a request process available under the Act. The FTC advises reporting the platform if it requires you to create an account just to request removal.

Where it is safe and lawful to do so, record the post’s URL, the account or profile name, the date and time, and any request number or response from the platform. Save screenshots or other relevant evidence without forwarding or reposting the image. If the material may depict a minor in a sexual context, do not download, forward, or circulate it; use the appropriate reporting channels instead.
2. Track the platform’s response and report a failure
Under the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a covered platform must remove the covered image and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. The requirement applies to the covered image and known identical copies—not every related image, altered version, repost, or item anywhere online. The FTC began enforcing the platform requirements on May 19, 2026. If a covered platform does not meet the deadline, report it to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.

3. Consider a tool for limiting resharing
StopNCII is a free global tool operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. It creates a digital fingerprint from an image and shares the fingerprint, not the image itself, with participating platforms. Those platforms can scan for matches and may block them. It only works with participating platforms, so it is not a guarantee that an image will be found or removed everywhere on the internet.
4. Use child-safety and law-enforcement reporting channels when relevant
If the person depicted is a minor, or you are a parent or guardian responding to abuse involving a child, follow the FTC’s guidance to use National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reporting resources. The FTC also recommends reporting perpetrators to local law enforcement or the FBI. Do not circulate apparent child sexual abuse material as a way to document or expose it.

5. Treat threats and extortion as an immediate safety issue
If someone is threatening to publish images or demanding money or other action, prioritize personal safety and contact local law enforcement or the FBI. Keep relevant messages and account details if it is safe to do so. The FTC’s guidance can help you identify reporting options; complying with a demand is not a substitute for getting help.
What to do about a fake endorsement, voice clone, or other impersonation
For a deepfake used to solicit money, promote a product, impersonate you, or deceive others, preserve the original post and URL, the account details, and any related messages. Report it to the hosting service. If the content appears to impersonate you in a business or payment context, alert your official channels and the relevant business or payment provider so they can warn customers or review suspicious activity.

There is no universal federal 48-hour removal process for these other forms of likeness misuse. Depending on the facts and jurisdiction, a lawyer may assess state right-of-publicity or privacy claims, false endorsement, fraud, or other possible routes. The desired outcome also matters: removal, stopping repeat use, addressing a scam, or seeking compensation may call for different steps.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 report identifies right-of-publicity law as a potentially relevant state-law option for unauthorized digital replicas, but it does not create a uniform nationwide claim. The USPTO’s August 5, 2024 hearing transcript on name, image, and likeness protection records testimony about the difficulty of enforcement when content spreads quickly or anonymously. That testimony illustrates a challenge, not a guarantee that any particular monitoring or takedown service is available or effective today.

No cited official source establishes a product or technical setting that can guarantee your face or voice will not be used without permission. These steps can reduce exposure or help you make better-informed decisions, but they cannot prevent all misuse.
- Review public profiles and audience settings. Remove personal images, recordings, or other material that does not need to be public.
- Use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication for social, creator, and other accounts that contain personal media. Review connected apps and their permissions.
- Before providing a photo, voice recording, scan, or performance capture to a company or collaborator, ask what it may be used to create, whether it will be retained or used for AI training, and whether it may be sublicensed or reused.
- For commercial agreements, define permitted uses, duration, media, territory, payment, and deletion or revocation terms. Consider having an entertainment or privacy lawyer review significant agreements.
- A visible watermark may help identify an image or discourage casual reuse, but it is not a legal shield and can be cropped or altered. It does not guarantee that an image will be excluded from AI training.
When to get jurisdiction-specific legal advice
Consider consulting a lawyer familiar with privacy, entertainment, or intellectual-property law if the content is being used commercially, is spreading despite reports, involves threats or financial loss, or you need to understand options under the law where you live. The federal intimate-image process is specific; other claims can turn on state law, the content, the person depicted, and how the likeness is being used.
