Keep your laptop in accessible carry-on baggage when you fly, cushion it against knocks, and keep spare batteries and power banks in the cabin. If you must check the laptop, turn it completely off and protect it from damage and accidental activation. FAA guidance applies to US air travel; your airline or another country’s rules may be stricter.
How should you pack a laptop for a trip?
Put the laptop in a carry-on bag you can access during the journey. The FAA says devices containing lithium batteries, including laptops, should be carried in carry-on baggage. Keeping it close also makes it easier to respond if the device becomes unusually hot or shows other battery warning signs.

Use a padded sleeve or case to help guard against ordinary handling knocks. Choose one that fits the laptop’s dimensions, provides cushioning, and lets you remove the device easily from your bag. These are practical selection considerations, not FAA requirements or claims about tested performance. Avoid packing the laptop where other items can press heavily on it or where it could be struck.
Can you put a laptop in checked luggage?
Under FAA guidance, a laptop may be checked only if it is completely powered off—not asleep or in hibernation—and protected from accidental activation and damage. The FAA still recommends carry-on carriage. Check your airline’s rules before departure because a carrier may impose stricter requirements. See the FAA’s guidance on portable electronic devices containing batteries.

Where should spare batteries and power banks go?
Keep spare lithium batteries and power banks in the cabin; FAA passenger guidance does not allow them in checked baggage. If staff gate-check your carry-on, remove these items first and keep them with you in the cabin. Protect spare batteries from damage and short circuits, including by preventing exposed terminals from contacting metal objects. The FAA’s September 24, 2025 baggage summary reiterates this guidance.
What battery capacity is allowed on a US flight?
The FAA’s passenger guidance sets these limits for rechargeable batteries. They are US aviation guidance, not a guarantee that every airline or itinerary permits the same items; verify the applicable rules with your carrier.

Do not take a hazardous damaged or recalled battery-powered device on an aircraft unless its battery has been removed or made safe. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and enter thermal runaway. The FAA identifies damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging, improper packing, and manufacturing defects as possible contributors.
