Protect digital work in layers: secure the accounts and devices that hold it, keep separate copies you can restore, document what you created and the permissions attached to it, and use the right reporting process if you find suspected infringement. Copyright rules depend on jurisdiction; the takedown steps below describe the U.S. DMCA process, while the automatic-protection guidance is specific to the UK.
What copyright protects—and what it does not
Copyright generally protects original expression, not the underlying idea, concept, system, or method. The U.S. Copyright Office says a website can contain protectable authorship such as writing, artwork, and photographs. The rights to each component may differ, particularly when contributors or licensed material are involved. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s website copyright FAQ.

Publication is not required for copyright protection under U.S. Copyright Office guidance. In the UK, qualifying copyright protection arises automatically when a work is created. The UK Intellectual Property Office says, “You get copyright protection automatically – you do not have to apply or pay a fee.” It also explains that adding a © mark, name, and year does not change the level of protection. Secure the accounts that control your work
A stolen or compromised account can expose files, lock you out of publishing channels, or let someone delete your work. Prioritize email and file-storage accounts, along with publishing platforms and any other accounts that could expose or remove content.

- Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is available. Choose the strongest method the service offers; prefer a phishing-resistant option when supported.
- Keep account recovery details current so you can regain access if a device or password is lost.
- Limit access to collaborators who need it, and remove access when their role ends.
- Keep devices and software updated to reduce exposure to known security weaknesses.
CISA recommends MFA broadly, with email and file storage among the important systems to protect. Its guidance is available in CISA’s MFA guidance.
Keep backups you can actually restore
A backup is useful only if it survives the incident that affects your working device and you can recover the files. CISA recommends secure external-drive or vetted-cloud backups. For ransomware resilience, its guidance calls for offline, encrypted copies and regular tests of integrity and availability. A drive left connected continuously may be exposed to the same compromise as the computer.

CISA supports secure external-drive and vetted-cloud backups, and recommends offline encrypted copies for ransomware recovery. Its ransomware guidance explains the recovery-oriented approach. An external drive is one possible backup destination; it does not establish ownership or prevent someone from copying work online. Also distinguish cybersecurity advice to keep recoverable copies from the legal question of whether copying a particular copyrighted file is permitted. The U.S. Copyright Office says the Section 117 archival-copy privilege applies to computer programs under specified conditions and does not specifically authorize backup copies of other downloaded copyrighted works; do not treat that as a rule for every file or jurisdiction. Keep records of authorship and permissions
Organize original working files, dated drafts, publication records, licenses, and contributor agreements. These records can help explain who created material and what permissions apply if a dispute arises. They are practical recordkeeping, not a guarantee that every use is infringing or a substitute for legal advice.

- Preserve editable source files and meaningful versions of drafts.
- Record when and where work was published.
- Keep licenses and agreements with the files or projects they cover, including permissions for contributed material.
- Track which parts of a site or publication are your original work and which are licensed or created by others.
How to report suspected infringement in the United States
A U.S. copyright owner can send a DMCA takedown notice without first registering the work. The U.S. Copyright Office states, “A copyright registration is not required before sending a takedown notice.” However, registration is required before suing in court for infringement of a U.S. work. A notice is a process for requesting removal, not a court judgment. Consult the Copyright Office’s Section 512 takedown FAQ.
Prepare and send the notice
- Identify the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed.
- Identify the specific material you believe is infringing and give enough information for the provider to locate it.
- Provide your contact information and the required good-faith and accuracy statements.
- Sign the notice, then send it to the service provider’s designated agent or submit it through the provider’s reporting form.
The Copyright Office provides sample notices and information on finding a designated agent. An owner may submit a notice directly or authorize an agent, such as an attorney or takedown company. Using a service is optional. Because the notice includes statements under penalty of perjury, identify material carefully: the Copyright Office warns that material misrepresentations can create liability.

Understand counter-notices and possible restoration
A recipient who believes material was removed by mistake or misidentification may submit a counter-notice. Under the DMCA process, a provider generally restores the material after 10 to 14 business days unless the original sender reports filing a court action. A takedown request does not decide the underlying legal dispute. See the Copyright Office’s Section 512 FAQ for the process and qualifications.

In a June 4, 2025 advisory update, CISA reported that the FBI was aware of approximately 900 entities allegedly exploited by Play ransomware actors as of May 2025. That figure concerns a specific ransomware group and reporting period; it is not a measure of how often creators’ content is stolen or of an individual creator’s risk.
