Treat a third-party AI proxy as a separate recipient of every prompt you send through it. The model provider’s privacy terms do not automatically apply to the intermediary. Before using a proxy, check what it stores, how it uses data, which providers it forwards requests to, and whether its commitments cover your exact route. Then remove secrets and identifiers before sending anything.
Is it safe to use an AI proxy?
It depends on the proxy’s own practices and the information you send. A proxy adds another service to the data path: it may receive prompts and responses, and may also process request metadata or logs. The model provider’s terms do not establish what the proxy does with that information.

OpenAI’s guidance for remote MCP servers makes the distinction explicit: third-party servers are subject to their own terms, retention, and residency policies. OpenAI advises conducting due diligence on aggregators and reviewing what data is shared with them (OpenAI’s MCP server guidance). Those recommendations are useful when evaluating an AI proxy, but do not certify any particular proxy.
Can an AI proxy see my prompts?
Assume that a proxy can access the content it needs to route or process your request unless its architecture and terms establish otherwise. The proxy may also receive responses and related operational data. A privacy policy, contract, or technical design should explain what the service can access and what it retains; do not infer privacy from the fact that the underlying model is provided by a well-known company.

For example, OpenAI says its remote MCP servers have their own data-handling policies. Data sent to one follows that server’s retention and residency rules, rather than becoming subject only to OpenAI’s policies (OpenAI’s MCP server guidance).
What to check before choosing a proxy
Review the proxy’s current privacy notice and terms, and look for specific answers to each of these questions. For work or regulated data, seek written commitments that apply to the full processing chain, not just the proxy’s front end.

- Retention: Does the service store prompts, responses, metadata, or logs? For how long? Can you configure retention or request deletion?
- Use: Can content be used for model training, product improvement, analytics, abuse monitoring, or human review? Does an opt-out cover each purpose?
- Forwarding: Which model providers and subprocessors receive requests? Can routing change, and will you be told when it does?
- Scope: Do the terms cover the specific API, model, endpoint, tools, and features you intend to use? Are files, search, memory, or conversation history handled under different rules?
- Location: Where is content processed and stored? Does a residency commitment also cover onward transfers to model providers and subprocessors?
- Security and access: What access controls, encryption, audit records, incident-notification commitments, and deletion procedures are documented?
- Accountability: Does the provider identify subprocessors and agree to its commitments in a contract or data-processing addendum?
OpenAI recommends preferring official servers hosted by the service provider where possible, and conducting due diligence when using a third-party aggregator. It also recommends reviewing and logging what is sent to third-party servers (OpenAI’s MCP server guidance).
How to use an AI proxy without exposing sensitive data
- Decide whether the proxy is necessary. If its added features do not justify another recipient, connect directly to the model provider instead.
- Review the route before sending content. Read the proxy’s current privacy notice, terms, data-processing terms, and subprocessor list. Confirm the actual model and features selected.
- Remove secrets and identifiers. Do not paste API keys, passwords, access tokens, personal identifiers, customer records, confidential source code, or regulated information unless the proxy is approved for that use.
- Redact examples. Replace real names, account IDs, internal hostnames, and other identifying details with placeholders. For debugging, use synthetic data where possible and include only the context needed.
- Turn off optional collection where available. Disable history, memory, prompt logging, or training features if appropriate, then check the written policy to understand what each setting actually changes.
- For teams, control access and routes. Use an approved gateway, restrict access by role, keep an inventory of vendors and routes, and review what information is sent and where it goes.
- Require review for new integrations. Get approval before enabling a proxy route or external tool that can read sensitive information or take actions. OpenAI similarly recommends approval controls for sensitive MCP actions (OpenAI’s MCP server guidance).
If information is regulated or contractually restricted, do not send it through an unapproved proxy. Ask the organization’s privacy or security team to assess the complete processing chain first.

Does a proxy store or train on my AI chats?
That depends on the proxy’s terms and implementation. Do not assume that the model provider’s training or retention policy applies to a separate intermediary. OpenAI’s statement that business and API data is not used to train its models by default concerns OpenAI services; it does not establish what a proxy does with the same content (OpenAI business data privacy).
Provider policies also differ by product, endpoint, feature, and agreement. OpenAI documents default API abuse-monitoring retention of up to 30 days, subject to exceptions, and says application-state retention varies by endpoint and feature (OpenAI platform data controls). Anthropic’s standard commercial API policy says inputs and outputs are ordinarily deleted within 30 days, with exceptions for certain features, agreed arrangements, policy enforcement, or legal compliance (Anthropic’s organization data-retention policy, dated July 1, 2026). These are provider-specific policy statements, not guarantees about a proxy.

Does zero data retention cover an AI proxy?
Not automatically. A zero-data-retention commitment may apply only to eligible features of a provider’s API and under a particular organizational arrangement. Anthropic says its ZDR arrangements apply to eligible Claude API features; partner-operated cloud platforms have separate controls and documentation (Anthropic API and data-retention documentation).

How to compare two proxy services
Compare like with like: check whether each service’s commitments cover the same model, endpoint, and feature combination. A concise comparison should include:
- Prompt, response, metadata, and log retention periods.
- Training, product-improvement, analytics, abuse-monitoring, and human-review uses.
- Downstream model providers, subprocessors, and onward sharing.
- Deletion controls, exceptions, and what happens after a deletion request.
- Access controls, security measures, and incident response.
- Processing and storage locations, including onward transfers.
Retention and residency can vary by feature, while third-party services maintain their own policies. Recheck the proxy’s current terms and the exact route before sending sensitive information.
