If someone unexpectedly says your crypto account is compromised, your funds are tied to a crime, or you must move crypto to keep it safe, stop. Do not share passwords, one-time codes, or your seed phrase, and do not transfer funds to an address they provide. End the conversation and verify the claim through an official contact channel you find independently.
How crypto wallet impersonation scams work
Scammers pose as exchange staff, wallet support, government agencies, law enforcement, or other organizations. They may contact you by phone, text, email, social media, or a fake support website. The pressure often starts with an alarming claim—your account has been accessed, a transaction needs to be reversed, or you are implicated in an investigation—and quickly turns into a request for access, information, or money.

Fake exchange alerts
An unexpected caller or message may claim there is a problem with your exchange account and urge you to click a link, disclose login information, or provide identifying details. The FBI’s exchange-impersonation alert recommends ending the interaction and contacting the exchange using its official number or website, located independently.
Fake wallet support
A person claiming to be wallet support may say your wallet is at risk and ask you to grant access or move funds to another wallet for “safekeeping.” That transfer gives the scammer control of the destination funds. Search results and ads for support can also lead to fictitious sites, so do not treat a prominent search listing as proof that a support channel is genuine. Use the wallet provider’s official website or app to locate help. The FBI describes this pattern in its cryptocurrency support-fraud alert.

Free token or NFT phishing
An unsolicited offer of a free token or NFT may include a link in a wallet memo, email, social post, or third-party site. The link can lead to a page that asks you to connect a wallet or enter security information. Your seed phrase—usually a string of 12 to 24 words—is a key to controlling your crypto. Never enter it into a site reached from an unsolicited offer. See the FBI’s airdrop phishing alert.
Government or law-enforcement threats
A caller may accuse you of involvement in a crime, threaten arrest, demand secrecy, or claim you must pay or assist with an investigation. Contact details can be spoofed, and persistent pressure is not proof of authority. The FBI states: “Law enforcement and government authorities will never contact members of the public by telephone or text message to demand any form of payment or to request personal or sensitive information.” Its September 17, 2026 alert says these impersonation complaints involved nearly 61,000 complaints and more than $1.6 billion in losses from January 2025 through July 2026. Those figures concern law-enforcement or government impersonation, not all crypto scams.

“Move your money to protect it”
In a related scam, someone keeps you alarmed and isolated, tells you to withdraw cash and buy cryptocurrency, then directs you to scan a QR code that sends the crypto to the scammer. A QR code is simply a way to encode a destination or action; it does not make a payment safe. The FTC explains this Bitcoin ATM pattern in its consumer alert.

- Stop the conversation. Hang up or leave the chat. Do not stay connected while withdrawing cash, buying crypto, changing wallet settings, or moving funds.
- Keep access private. Do not disclose your seed phrase, password, or one-time code. Do not install software, grant remote access, or let a stranger control your device or wallet.
- Ignore unsolicited links and QR codes. Do not click, scan, or open attachments from the contact. Navigate to a known official website or app yourself.
- Verify through a separate channel. If an exchange account may genuinely be at risk, contact the exchange through support details you locate independently, such as on its official site or a trusted statement. For an alleged government contact, use the agency’s publicly listed contact information—not a number or link the caller supplies.
- Do not send crypto to “protect” it. Do not pay a supposed fine, government fee, account-unfreezing charge, or safeguarding deposit in cryptocurrency. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency.”
Do not assume that an unexpected transaction or an accusation from a caller proves your wallet is compromised or that you are implicated in wrongdoing. Verify account activity through the service’s official channel before taking action.

How to reduce wallet and service risks
- Keep your seed phrase private and offline. A legitimate support conversation should not require you to disclose it.
- Reach support by typing a known official address or using the provider’s app, rather than following a link from a message or relying on an unsolicited search result.
- Treat urgency, secrecy, threats, and requests to move crypto as reasons to pause and verify—not as reasons to act faster.
- If you use a U.S. cryptocurrency money-transmitting service, consider whether it is registered as a Money Services Business where required and follows applicable anti-money-laundering requirements. The FBI warns that law-enforcement action against services can disrupt access, particularly when customer crypto is intermingled with illicit funds. Its alert about unregistered cryptocurrency money-transmitting services concerns service-related risk; it does not establish that every self-custody wallet or a person who receives a transfer is involved in laundering.
What to do if you shared access or sent crypto
- Stop communicating with the suspected scammer. Do not pay more money to recover funds or comply with new instructions.
- Preserve the details. Save messages and records of phone numbers, email addresses, websites, and social profiles. Record the transaction hash, destination wallet address, amount, asset, and date and time. Do not delete relevant communications.
- Contact relevant services promptly. If an exchange, bank, payment service, or other financial account may be exposed, contact it through an independently verified channel and explain what happened.
- Report in the United States. Submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and contact local law enforcement. The FBI’s victim guidance explains reporting and record preservation.
- Be cautious of recovery offers. A person or service promising to retrieve crypto for an upfront fee may be targeting you again. The FBI’s government-impersonation alert warns about recovery scams.
These reporting contacts are U.S.-specific. If you are elsewhere, use your country’s official fraud-reporting and law-enforcement channels.
