What Fail2ban protects—and what it does not
Fail2ban is a host-level, log-driven control. It does not inspect WordPress requests directly. Instead, it reads events written by WordPress, the web server, or another service; a filter recognizes a failed or abusive event and extracts an IP address; an action applies a firewall or other ban; and a jail ties the filter, log source, retry policy, and action together.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction determines whether the protection works. A perfectly written filter is useless if the jail watches an empty file, the wrong journal, or a log format that does not match the filter. Conversely, a jail pointed at the wrong source can miss attacks or ban a legitimate visitor because an unrelated message happens to match.
- Filter: the pattern that identifies an event and extracts the remote address.
- Action: what Fail2ban does after the retry limit is reached, such as inserting a firewall rule.
- Jail: the enabled policy that combines a filter, backend, log source, ports, retry count, and action.
- Backend: the mechanism used to read a file or systemd journal.
Ubuntu’s Fail2ban configuration is divided into global settings, filter definitions, action definitions, and jail definitions. Leave packaged .conf files unchanged. Put site-specific settings in .local files or files under jail.d; package updates can then replace their defaults without erasing your policy.

Before you configure anything
Confirm the WordPress integration
WordPress must emit the events expected by WP fail2ban’s standard filters. Make sure the WP fail2ban integration is installed and active, and that its standard wordpress-hard and wordpress-soft filter files are available to Fail2ban. The filters are application-aware; generic web-server rules alone cannot reliably distinguish a WordPress authentication failure from other HTTP traffic.
Identify the real log backend
Decide whether the relevant events are written to a traditional syslog file or to systemd journald. The example commonly shown for file-based logging uses /var/log/auth.log, but that path is only valid if your installation actually writes the WordPress events there. Check the file and its recent entries rather than assuming the example applies unchanged.
If your host uses journald, you need the systemd backend and a journal match. The identifier must correspond to the identifier emitted by WordPress; a syntactically valid jail with the wrong identifier will see no events.
Record the web server and its logs
Apache and Nginx use different access and error log variables and formats. Enable a web-server jail only when that server is running, its relevant module or behavior exists, and the configured log path contains the expected records. WordPress jails and web-server jails solve related but separate problems.
Install and verify the Fail2ban service
On an Ubuntu host where Fail2ban is not yet installed, install the distribution package, then enable the service. The exact package source and service policy can vary by Ubuntu release, so verify the service state after installation rather than assuming it is already running.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fail2ban
sudo systemctl enable --now fail2ban
sudo systemctl status fail2ban
If your organization already manages Fail2ban, do not replace its package or global configuration. Continue with a local jail file and the existing service-management process.

Install the standard WordPress filters safely
WP fail2ban provides the standard wordpress-hard and wordpress-soft filters. Copy those standard filter files into the host’s Fail2ban filter directory before enabling the jails. On many Ubuntu installations that directory is /etc/fail2ban/filter.d/; use the directory supplied by your package if it differs.
Keep a separate, administrator-owned copy if you customize a filter. Never edit the standard wordpress-hard.conf or wordpress-soft.conf files in place. WP fail2ban does not automatically update copied custom filters, so every copied file becomes a maintenance responsibility.
Before enabling a jail, inspect the filter names and make sure they are spelled exactly as the files define them. A typo in filter = prevents the jail from loading; a copied file that is no longer current can silently miss new event formats or match an obsolete pattern.
Configure WordPress jails for file-based syslog
Create a local jail file, for example /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/wordpress.local. The following is the documented starting configuration for syslog-style logging:

enabled = true

logpath = /var/log/auth.log
maxretry = 1
port = http,https
[wordpress-soft]
enabled = true
filter = wordpress-soft
logpath = /var/log/auth.log
maxretry = 3
port = http,https
Replace /var/log/auth.log with the file that actually contains the WordPress messages on your server. If the events are split across files, use the appropriate path pattern supported by your Fail2ban version. Do not leave the example path merely because the file exists; it must contain matching WordPress records.
| Jail | Intended event class | Starting maxretry |
Reason for the different threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
wordpress-hard |
High-confidence abuse, such as blocked users or pingbacks with errors | 1 | An immediate ban may be appropriate when one event is sufficient evidence of abuse. |
wordpress-soft |
Failed WordPress authentication attempts | 3 | Normal users mistype passwords, so the policy allows retries before banning. |
These values express a policy distinction, not a promise that every site should use exactly one and three attempts. A public membership site, a private administration portal, and a site behind a corporate identity provider can reasonably choose different thresholds. The important principle is to classify events by confidence and harm instead of treating every failure as an immediate attack.

Configure WordPress with journald
When WordPress writes to systemd journald rather than a traditional file, configure its syslog tags first. WP fail2ban documents these settings:
define('WP_FAIL2BAN_SYSLOG_SHORT_TAG', false);
define('WP_FAIL2BAN_SYSLOG_TAG_HOST', false);
After the tags are set, use the systemd backend and match the WordPress identifier in the jail. A local file such as /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/wordpress-journal.local can contain:
[wordpress-hard]
enabled = true
filter = wordpress-hard
backend = systemd
journalmatch = SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=wordpress
maxretry = 1
port = http,https
[wordpress-soft]
enabled = true
filter = wordpress-soft
backend = systemd
journalmatch = SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=wordpress
maxretry = 3
port = http,https
Do not combine a journald jail with a guessed file path and expect one setting to compensate for the other. The backend must read the journal, and journalmatch must select records whose identifier is really wordpress. Check the journal directly to confirm that identifier before reloading Fail2ban.
If you change the WordPress logging constants, generate a new event and verify that the resulting journal record has the expected identifier. This test distinguishes a logging problem from a filter problem: no matching journal record means Fail2ban cannot possibly ban the address.
Choose hard and soft policies deliberately
WP fail2ban’s guidance recommends using both filters, while recognizing that there is no universal policy. A “hard” event for one site may be a tolerable warning on another. For example, an administrator-only site might regard repeated blocked-user events as conclusive abuse, while a site with a complicated proxy or identity layer might need to investigate the source before imposing a long ban.
- Use the hard jail for: events your site considers conclusive and dangerous enough to justify a one-event response.
- Use the soft jail for: events that can result from user error, especially ordinary failed logins.
- Review both together: an attacker may trigger different event classes, and a policy that enables only one filter can leave a gap.
- Tune after observation: inspect actual matches, ban records, and legitimate-user reports before changing retry limits.
The retry count is not the only control. Your action determines how the address is blocked, and your ban duration determines how costly a false positive becomes. Start conservatively where legitimate access is important, and use a shorter ban while validating a new filter.

Enable only the web-server jails that match your host
Apache
Upstream Fail2ban includes Apache-oriented jails such as apache-auth, apache-badbots, apache-noscript, apache-overflows, and apache-botsearch. They rely on Apache access or error log variables. Enable one only when Apache is the deployed server, the relevant behavior or module exists, and the configured log path contains the format expected by that jail.
Nginx
For Nginx, available examples include nginx-http-auth, nginx-limit-req, nginx-botsearch, nginx-bad-request, and nginx-forbidden. These use Nginx access or error logs. Select the jail that corresponds to the event you are trying to control; enabling every Nginx jail by default increases the chance of monitoring an unused log or matching a behavior your site never produces.
Why web-server and WordPress jails are separate
A web-server jail can recognize a malformed request, an authentication response, or a request-rate condition visible in the server log. A WordPress jail recognizes application events emitted by WordPress. They may observe the same attacker from different layers, but they do not substitute for one another. Keep their log paths and filters distinct so that troubleshooting shows which layer generated a ban.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reload, test, and inspect the jails
After creating or changing a local jail, validate the configuration and reload the service. A restart is also acceptable when that is how your host manages Fail2ban.

sudo fail2ban-client -t
sudo systemctl reload fail2ban
sudo fail2ban-client status
sudo fail2ban-client status wordpress-hard
sudo fail2ban-client status wordpress-soft
The test command should complete without a configuration error. The general status should list the enabled jails, and each WordPress jail’s status should show its filter, currently failed count, and banned count. If a jail is absent, inspect its local filename, section header, and the service log for a parse or filter-loading error.
To test matching without waiting for a real attack, use a representative log line from your own host and the filter-testing facility provided by your installed Fail2ban version. Test with sanitized data and a controlled source address; never manufacture a ban against a shared office, monitoring service, or administrator address.
Best Value
When a legitimate administrator is banned, remove the address using the client command supported by your Fail2ban version, then correct the policy before reenabling the jail. An allowlist can protect trusted management addresses, but it must be maintained when networks, VPNs, or staff change.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The jail loads but never bans
- Confirm that the selected
logpathcontains recent WordPress events, or that journald contains records matchingSYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=wordpress. - Check that the filter filename matches the value after
filter =. - Verify that the log format is the one expected by the standard filter; a reverse proxy or custom formatter may change the address or message structure.
- Make sure the remote address is present and extractable. If every request appears to originate from a proxy, Fail2ban may ban the proxy instead of the visitor.
The jail fails to start
- Look for duplicate section names across files in
jail.dand local overrides. - Check spelling and indentation in the INI-style file.
- Confirm that the filter file exists in the configured filter directory and has readable permissions.
- Run the configuration test before reloading so that a syntax error does not interrupt a working service.
Legitimate users are banned
- Increase the soft filter’s retry threshold or shorten the ban while investigating.
- Check whether password managers, mobile clients, or an identity provider are repeatedly submitting stale credentials.
- Separate hard and soft events rather than lowering all protections to accommodate ordinary login mistakes.
- Review proxy and load-balancer address handling so the filter sees the real client address where that is appropriate.
Attacks are visible but not detected
Do not immediately add a broad regular expression. First capture the exact event, compare it with the current standard filter, and determine whether the event belongs in a WordPress filter or a web-server filter. If you customize a copied filter, document the reason and schedule a review whenever WP fail2ban updates its standard rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Maintain the control over time
Filter maintenance is part of the security control, not an optional cleanup task. Copied filters do not update automatically. Keep a record of the upstream version from which each local copy was taken, compare new releases with your custom changes, and retest after upgrades to WordPress, the web server, the logging stack, or Ubuntu.
- Review banned addresses and false positives on a regular schedule.
- Confirm that log rotation does not move events outside the configured path.
- Check that journald retention still covers the period in which Fail2ban needs to inspect events.
- Remove jails for services that are no longer installed or whose logs have moved.
- Keep local overrides in
.localorjail.drather than modifying packaged files.
Fail2ban is a response mechanism, not a replacement for WordPress updates, strong administrator authentication, least-privilege accounts, secure backups, or a correctly configured reverse proxy. It can reduce repeated abuse from an address that keeps generating recognizable events, but it cannot repair a compromised account or detect attacks that leave no matching log record.
A rollout sequence that minimizes lockouts
- Identify whether WordPress events are in a file or journald, and record the exact path or journal identifier.
- Install or verify the WP fail2ban integration and copy the standard WordPress filters into the host filter directory.
- Create a local jail file containing both hard and soft WordPress sections.
- Set
logpathfor file logging, or setbackend = systemdandjournalmatch = SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=wordpressfor journald. - Enable only the Apache or Nginx jails that correspond to the deployed server, module, format, and log path.
- Validate the configuration, reload Fail2ban, and inspect each jail’s status.
- Generate or observe a controlled event, confirm that the filter matches the intended address, and verify that the action creates the expected ban.
- Monitor false positives, then adjust retry counts, ban duration, or allowlists to fit the site’s users and operational access.
- Track copied-filter updates and retest after component upgrades.
Practical decision table
| Decision | Choose this when | Check before enabling |
|---|---|---|
| File-based WordPress jail | WordPress events are written to a readable syslog file. | The configured logpath contains matching records and survives rotation. |
| Journald WordPress jail | Events are stored in systemd journald. | WordPress emits the expected tags and the journal contains SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=wordpress. |
wordpress-hard |
A single event is sufficiently strong evidence of abuse. | The event cannot commonly be caused by a legitimate user or integration. |
wordpress-soft |
Users can reasonably make several failed attempts. | The retry count and ban duration leave room for normal mistakes. |
| Apache jail | Apache produces the relevant access or error event. | The selected jail’s variables and log format match the host. |
| Nginx jail | Nginx produces the relevant access or error event. | The selected jail’s variables and log format match the host. |
Frequently asked questions
Should I use only wordpress-hard?
No. The recommended design uses both filters, assigning immediate bans only to high-confidence events and allowing more retries for ordinary failed logins.
Can I leave /var/log/auth.log unchanged?
Only if that file really contains the WordPress events on your Ubuntu installation. The example is a starting point, not a guarantee about your logging layout.
Do I need Apache or Nginx jails if the WordPress jails are enabled?
They address different event layers. Add a web-server jail only when its server, module or behavior, log format, and path are present and relevant to your threat model.
Why should I avoid editing the standard filter files?
Packaged and standard files can be replaced during updates, and direct edits are difficult to compare or recover. Put local changes in overrides or separately maintained copies, then update and retest those copies deliberately.
