Keep your Telegram bot token on the server in a private environment variable. Never use a NEXT_PUBLIC_ variable for it or expose the token to browser code. Telegram places the token in every Bot API request URL, so avoid exposing complete request URLs in logs, error reports, telemetry, or responses. For incoming webhooks, validate Telegram’s optional secret-token header in a server-side Next.js Route Handler.
Store the bot token in a server-only environment variable
Use a clear name such as TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN. Next.js loads .env* values into process.env, where server-side code can read private values. For local development, put the token in an ignored local environment file, such as .env.local, and configure it through your deployment platform’s secret or environment-variable settings in production. The exact configuration screens differ by provider.

Next.js says its default create-next-app template adds environment files to .gitignore, and its environment-variable guide warns: “You almost never want to commit these files to your repository.” Check that your real token has not been committed; an ignored file is useful protection, not a substitute for keeping credentials out of source control. See the Next.js environment-variable guide.
Keep the token out of browser code and exposed URLs
Do not name the variable NEXT_PUBLIC_TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN. Next.js inlines values with the NEXT_PUBLIC_ prefix into browser JavaScript during next build, making them visible to users. Read the private variable only in server-side code, such as a Route Handler or other server-only module, and do not import token-bearing code into a Client Component.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Telegram’s Bot API request format is https://api.telegram.org/bot<token>/METHOD_NAME. Because the credential is part of the URL path, keep the full URL out of browser responses, application logs, tracing and telemetry, exception messages, and screenshots. Build and use the request on the server, and be careful not to log the URL when handling failures. Telegram documents this request format in its Bot API reference.
Validate Telegram webhook requests in a Route Handler
When Telegram sends updates to your app, configure a webhook secret_token and keep the same value in a private server-side environment variable, separate from the bot token. Telegram sends the configured value in the X-Telegram-Bot-Api-Secret-Token header. Compare the incoming header with your expected secret before processing the request; reject a missing or mismatched value, for example with HTTP 401.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Next.js supports receiving third-party webhook requests in Route Handlers and documents comparing request data with an environment variable before accepting it. Its Backend for Frontend guide includes a webhook validation example. Telegram’s Bot API reference documents the header and the optional webhook secret token.

This check authenticates the webhook request using the configured shared secret. It does not authenticate unrelated application routes; protect those according to their own access requirements.

Respond to a leaked token
If the token appears in source control, client output, logs, or another place others could access, treat it as compromised. Replace it through the applicable Telegram bot controls, update the private environment variable in every deployment that uses it, and review the likely exposure location so the replacement is not disclosed in the same way.
Telegram’s Bot API reference describes token replacement for managed bots, but that does not establish that ordinary BotFather-managed bots use the same procedure. Confirm the current instructions for your bot type in Telegram’s documentation and controls rather than relying on a possibly different workflow. The Telegram Bot Features documentation provides context on managed bots.

Production security checklist
- Store
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKENin server-side environment configuration, not in code or aNEXT_PUBLIC_variable. - Keep local environment files out of version control and do not commit real credentials.
- Make Bot API calls only from server-side code; do not return or log complete token-bearing request URLs.
- If receiving webhooks, configure and validate Telegram’s
secret_tokenheader before processing updates. - If exposure occurs, replace the token using the procedure applicable to your bot and update all deployments that use it.
