The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protect student privacy by collecting only the climate data the project needs, removing identifying details before any AI service sees it, and using only a school-approved tool suitable for students’ ages and purpose. A temperature reading or tree-cover observation may seem harmless, but names, faces, accounts, precise locations, or personal schedules can make the people behind the data identifiable. Keep a teacher responsible for tool selection and review, and have the school check policy, provider terms, and applicable law before sharing identifiable education records.
Start with the climate question, not the AI tool
First decide what students are trying to find out and what evidence can answer it. A project comparing shade, temperature, rainfall, or tree cover around a school may need measurements and generalized locations, but not student names, personal accounts, exact home addresses, household energy bills, or precise schedules. Collect the least information that will support the learning goal. This is a practical application of school data-protection principles, not a climate-project checklist issued by a regulator.

Then ask whether AI is needed at all. If students can compare or visualize the measurements without sending data to an AI service, keeping the work local avoids an unnecessary disclosure. If AI will help organize observations, explain patterns, or draft questions, prepare a version that does not identify students.
Remove identifying details before using AI
Before a prompt, file, image, or spreadsheet is uploaded, remove names, student IDs, contact details, identifiable faces, and location precision that the task does not require. Prefer aggregate readings, fictional examples, or generalized locations. Review captions and image or document metadata too: identifiers can remain there even after visible text has been edited.

- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
For example, a class might ask an AI tool to help summarize temperature readings from several campus areas. A safer input would use labels such as “north courtyard” and grouped measurements rather than a roster linking readings to named students or a map showing exact personal locations. Do not upload raw student records or sensitive observations to an unreviewed public service.
Have the school vet the specific service and setup
A tool’s general reputation is not enough to establish that a particular account configuration is appropriate for a class. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance for generative AI in education and research calls for human-centred use, data-privacy protection, attention to age limits for independent conversations, and institutional validation. UNICEF’s August 2024 school data-protection guidance treats technology use as a governance and cybersecurity matter. Neither source establishes the current terms or settings of a particular vendor.

Ask the district privacy or technology lead to verify the service for the intended students and task. The review should cover:
- Whether student ages and the proposed educational use are permitted, and whether the district has approved the service.
- What prompts, uploaded files, and account details it collects, and how long it retains them.
- Whether inputs may be used to improve models or for another secondary purpose.
- Who can access the information, including subcontractors, and what access controls apply.
- How deletion requests, security incidents, and data handling are addressed in the provider terms or school agreement.
- Whether the service is accessible and suitable for the learning activity.
These are decision criteria, not claims that every provider offers the same protections. UNICEF’s December 2025 version 3.0 of its Guidance on AI and children includes children’s data and privacy among its child-centred requirements and also identifies AI’s environmental impacts as a child-rights issue.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Set clear classroom rules and review AI outputs
Tell students why the class is using AI, what information must never be entered, and whom to ask if they are unsure. Activities should be age-appropriate; do not require a child to create an independent account where school guidance does not permit it. A teacher should check AI-generated summaries or conclusions before they shape the project or are shared. AI output can misread observations or present unsupported conclusions, so students should compare it with their source measurements.
Privacy routines can cover the whole activity, not just the AI prompt. UNESCO’s human-centred guidance supports age-appropriate, pedagogically designed use, while UNICEF’s child-rights approach emphasizes children’s best interests, privacy, safety, fairness, and transparency. UNESCO IITE’s 2020 handbook on personal data and privacy protection in online learning offers classroom-oriented practices before, during, and after learning; it predates today’s generative-AI context.

Plan storage, sharing, and deletion
Before the project begins, decide where source data and AI outputs will be stored, who can access them, whether work will be shown beyond the class, and when files will be deleted. Share aggregate findings when that is sufficient for the purpose. Do not publish identifiable student work or data simply because an AI tool has processed it.

If an outside provider will handle identifiable education records, the school should review the data-sharing basis and written terms before the information is sent. In the United States, the Department of Education’s FERPA privacy and data-sharing guidance describes a general rule against disclosing personally identifiable information from education records without written consent, alongside defined exceptions. Some service-provider arrangements may qualify under particular conditions, and written agreements may be needed. The details depend on the exception and the parties involved.

Check the rules that apply where your school is located
FERPA is a U.S. federal law governing privacy of education records; it does not by itself decide whether every climate observation, prompt, or student-generated dataset is an education record or whether a particular disclosure is allowed. The U.S. Department of Education’s overview of privacy and data sharing describes a general consent rule and exceptions, not a blanket requirement that every AI use needs parental consent or a blanket permission for vendors to receive student information.
UNICEF’s school data-protection publication is framed around GDPR and countries moving toward EU accession, while noting that its practices may be useful elsewhere. Its legal framing is not universal. Other locations may have different student-age, consent, data-protection, and school-procurement requirements. Ask the district privacy officer and the appropriate local authority to confirm the school’s obligations before identifiable records are shared.
