Your best practical safeguards are to understand the limits, preserve records tied to the transaction, and respond promptly through the route and deadline in the notice.
What PayPal protection does—and does not—cover
PayPal’s US Seller Protection terms, last updated January 26, 2026, list “Donations, including payments received as crowdfunding or crowdlending” among ineligible transactions. That means ordinary stream tips should not be described as automatically covered by Seller Protection. PayPal evaluates eligibility under the applicable terms and transaction details; check the specific transaction in your account rather than inferring coverage from a tipping page or platform integration. A card chargeback is different from a PayPal dispute. The cardholder’s issuing bank initiates and handles an issuer chargeback. PayPal may collect your information to support its response, but the outcome is not guaranteed. Deadlines are strict and can vary by case, so use the deadline in the notice and follow the instructions for that transaction. Do not rely on a general number of days. Build a transaction-linked evidence file
Keep records that identify the payment and address the reason stated in the notice. Gather what is relevant as soon as you receive a claim; do not assume you will be able to add documents later.
- Payment details: save the PayPal transaction ID and relevant transaction details.
- Stream context: retain the relevant chat log and a VOD clip or screenshot showing the tip in context, where available.
- Promised service or item: if the payment was connected to a specific service or digital item, preserve what you promised and records showing whether it was fulfilled or accessed. PayPal examples for intangible goods and services include system logs, delivery records, download history, and platform screenshots.
- Reason code: tailor your explanation and evidence to the stated reason, such as unauthorized payment, service not rendered, duplicate payment, or credit not processed. Send clear, relevant material promptly.
Transaction-specific evidence can help explain what happened; it does not guarantee a favorable outcome or make an otherwise ineligible donation eligible for Seller Protection. PayPal’s guidance for responding to a dispute or chargeback describes the evidence and response process.

How to respond when a chargeback arrives
- Read the notice in full. Identify whether it concerns a PayPal dispute or a chargeback initiated through a card issuer, the stated reason, the response deadline, and the channel PayPal specifies.
- Open the matching transaction. Confirm the transaction ID and gather records that connect to that payment and its reason code.
- Submit through the instructed route. For an unauthorized-transaction dispute, PayPal directs sellers to open the matter in the Resolution Center and upload the requested information. For an issuer chargeback, follow the chargeback instructions and deadline in PayPal’s notice.
- Keep a copy of what you send. Save your submitted explanation and attachments with the transaction records in case you need to refer to them later.
Do not send unrelated bulk screenshots or assume the same response fits every reason. PayPal describes issuer chargebacks as a process handled by the issuer, with PayPal collecting information from the seller; follow the specific instructions rather than treating it like a routine PayPal dispute.

Streamlabs says creators can connect a PayPal Business account for credit-card tipping. Its FAQ says tips are processed directly through PayPal and funds are not held by Streamlabs. If a payment or chargeback issue occurs, Streamlabs recommends contacting PayPal with the transaction ID. Streamlabs also documents an optional PayPal Chargeback Protection setup for qualifying users. Its guide says the feature applies to specified unbranded credit- and debit-card transactions when enabled and eligible; it is not blanket cover for every donation or tip. The setup requires tipper-detail collection to be enabled in Streamlabs for data transfer as described, which adds fields for the tipper. Check your PayPal account’s current offer, the exact transaction status, and current terms before relying on it. Streamlabs’ guide, updated July 22, 2025, reported a 0.40% fee per covered transaction, a monthly cap, supported countries, and Mexico in limited rollout; these are changeable feature details, not a chargeback-rate statistic. Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Assuming every tip qualifies for Seller Protection: donations are listed as ineligible in PayPal’s US terms. Check the transaction’s eligibility instead of assuming a payment button or integration changes its classification.
- Treating “no refunds” as a chargeback shield: it does not prevent an issuer challenge. Preserve transaction-linked records and answer the actual reason in the notice.
- Using one response for every claim: unauthorized payment, service not rendered, duplicate payment, and credit not processed call for evidence relevant to each allegation.
- Waiting or guessing at the deadline: use the date and submission route in the notice. PayPal does not set one universal response period in the cited guidance.
- Assuming a platform feature guarantees a win: confirm the feature is enabled, the payment is eligible, and the transaction shows the relevant status. Streamlabs says it cannot guarantee that every dispute will be won because the decision comes from the payment processor and bank.

How to reduce uncertainty before the next tip
- Keep transaction IDs and the related stream records organized so they can be retrieved quickly.
- If you offer a specific service or item alongside a tip, keep clear records of what was promised and whether it was delivered.
- If using optional chargeback tools through a platform, verify current eligibility, account configuration, fees, and transaction status before describing the feature to viewers as protection.
- Use plain language on your tip page. Do not promise that tips cannot be challenged or that a disclaimer guarantees you will keep the funds.
