For sensitive chats, use Signal’s account and device protections, and choose Telegram’s Secret Chat—not a regular Cloud Chat—when you need end-to-end encryption. Neither app can protect messages on an unlocked or compromised device, or stop a recipient from copying them.
Know what “private chat” means on Telegram
Telegram has two different chat modes, and the distinction matters more than its account-security settings:

| Chat mode | Encryption and storage | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Chat | Client-server/server-client encryption; chats are stored encrypted in Telegram Cloud. | Syncs across devices. |
| Secret Chat | End-to-end encryption; Telegram says, “All messages in secret chats use end-to-end encryption.” Secret Chats are not stored as chat history on Telegram’s servers. | Device-specific; it does not sync to your other devices. |
Telegram recommends Secret Chats for sensitive information. To start one, open the contact’s profile and choose Start Secret Chat. A Telegram passcode or Two-Step Verification can help protect access to your account or app, but neither changes a Cloud Chat into an end-to-end encrypted chat. See Telegram’s FAQ and Privacy Policy.
Secure your Signal account and devices
Signal’s protections matter alongside its messaging security: someone who can use your unlocked phone or a compromised computer may be able to read messages there. Signal recommends keeping the app and device operating system updated, keeping control of the phone number used to start your account, and enabling registration lock through Signal’s two-step verification settings.

Verify the person and the connection
Signal: compare safety numbers
For a sensitive one-to-one chat, open its settings and view the safety number. Compare it with the other person through a separate trusted channel, ideally in person. Signal says the number helps contacts verify the security of their messages and calls, but “This does not verify anyone’s identity.” A match therefore does not prove who someone is in real life. If the number changes unexpectedly or repeatedly, check with the contact through a trusted channel before relying on the conversation. Details are in Signal’s safety-number guidance.

Telegram: compare the Secret Chat key visualization
In a Secret Chat, compare the encryption-key visualization with the other person over a known secure channel, ideally in person. Telegram’s FAQ describes this comparison as a way to check against a man-in-the-middle attack. It does not by itself establish the other person’s real-world identity.
Protect Telegram account and app access
Enable Two-Step Verification and set a strong app passcode in Settings > Privacy and Security. Telegram describes Two-Step Verification as requiring both an SMS login code and an additional password; it offers an optional recovery email and documents passkeys as another login option. Availability and menu labels can vary by platform and app version, so follow the current in-app prompts.

Check active sessions and end any you do not recognize. If your phone is lost, Telegram advises enabling Two-Step Verification and, where possible, terminating the old session from another device where you are still logged in. These controls help protect access; they do not change Cloud Chat encryption. Telegram also warns it cannot protect messages from someone with physical or root access to a device, or from someone using an unlocked phone. See the Telegram FAQ.
Use disappearing messages for retention, not secrecy
Timers can reduce how long messages remain in chat history, but they cannot stop a recipient from saving content. Someone can copy a message or photograph the screen with another device. Do not send sensitive information to a person you do not trust.

Telegram Secret Chats
A Secret Chat’s self-destruct timer applies only to messages sent after the timer is set. Screenshot alerts are not dependable on every supported system, and they cannot detect an external photo of the screen. Telegram’s FAQ explains the limits.

Choose the right protections for the chat
- For end-to-end encryption on Telegram: start a Secret Chat with that contact; a regular Cloud Chat is not end-to-end encrypted.
- For multi-device convenience on Telegram: Cloud Chats sync across devices, while Secret Chats stay on their originating devices and are lost to you on logout.
- For sensitive one-to-one conversations: compare Signal safety numbers or Telegram Secret Chat key visualizations over a trusted separate channel, and separately establish whom you are speaking with.
- For less retained history: use disappearing-message timers with the understanding that they do not prevent copying or external recording.
Signal’s key account steps are registration lock, control of the starting phone number, and linked-device review. Telegram’s are Two-Step Verification, an app passcode, and active-session review. In both cases, protect the phone and computer themselves and keep their software current.
