Before sending money, independently check the person and platform, reject promises of guaranteed returns, and never share your wallet’s recovery phrase or private key. If you have already sent crypto, stop communicating with the suspected scammer, preserve evidence, and report it promptly.
What AI changes about crypto scams
Generative AI can help scammers produce persuasive messages, fake profiles and investment websites, cloned audio, and fabricated videos. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says criminals use AI-generated text in social engineering, phishing, romance, and investment schemes. FINRA also warns about personalized phishing, fake credentials, cloned voices, and deepfake selfies used in investment fraud. These techniques make a convincing appearance weaker evidence of identity—not a reason to trust a pitch.

Do not rely on visual or audio “tells” to decide whether a clip is genuine. Instead, verify the person and request through a separate channel you already trust. The FBI has also warned that scammers impersonate IC3 using AI-generated videos and spoofed websites; navigate to the official site yourself rather than following a link in a message. The FBI/IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022, but that historical figure is not an estimate of AI-related losses. The cited sources do not establish a distinct total for losses caused specifically by AI-generated crypto investment scams. How a crypto investment scam typically unfolds
A scam may start with an unsolicited message on social media or a dating app. The person builds trust, presents themselves as an investor or guide, and directs you to an app or website that appears to show an investment account. A displayed balance or apparent profit can be fabricated. After you deposit, the operator may push you to add more money, block withdrawals, or demand supposed taxes or fees before releasing the “profits.”
A June 2026 FBI/IC3 warning describes a related tactic: after building trust and showing fake returns on a fraudulent platform, scammers may ask victims for cash to continue investing or cover supposed withdrawal penalties. They may arrange for a courier to collect cash or valuables. An unknown courier collecting funds is a serious warning sign, not a legitimate account-protection measure.

The FTC advises treating guaranteed profit or large returns with little risk as hallmarks of investment fraud. Its guidance also recommends searching the person or company and the cryptocurrency name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” FTC: Investment Scams; FBI/IC3: Scammers Use Couriers to Collect Cash in Cryptocurrency Investment Scams
Verify before you send crypto
- Pause if you feel pressured. Urgency, secrecy, fear, romance, or insistence that you act quickly can be used to override careful judgment. Do not transfer funds while under emotional pressure.
- Verify the person independently. Leave the chat or hang up, then use a phone number or contact method you already know is genuine. For a purported government agency, exchange, or financial-services company, find its contact details on its official website yourself. Do not use the number or link in the suspicious message as your only verification.
- Check the platform and the exact web address. Search the company or person and the crypto asset with “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Search the exact URL and distinctive identifying details, too. Testimonials, endorsements, polished pages, and a balance shown in an app do not prove that assets exist or can be withdrawn.
- Reject guaranteed returns and pay-to-withdraw demands. “Zero risk,” guaranteed profits, free crypto, and requests to pay extra taxes or fees to release supposed profits are reasons to stop. The FTC says nobody can guarantee a profit from a crypto investment.
- Do not hand cash or valuables to a stranger. A supposed investment representative or courier collecting cash is a major red flag. End the interaction and verify any claimed organization independently.
- Do not reveal wallet secrets or approve an unclear transaction. Never give anyone your private key or wallet recovery phrase. Review transaction details on your trusted wallet device where possible, and reject a transaction you do not understand.
Protect wallet keys and account logins
Wallet recovery phrases and private keys
A recovery phrase can restore access to a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to take the funds. Keep it physically secure and offline; do not type it into a website or send it to someone claiming to be support. A hardware wallet can keep private keys in separate secured storage and reduce some online exposure, but it cannot tell whether an investment pitch is genuine, stop you from disclosing your recovery phrase, or make an unsafe transaction safe. Self-custody also means you are responsible for managing the device and backup.

Public photos and audio
Consider limiting publicly available audio and images and tightening social-account privacy. The FBI recommends reducing material scammers could exploit to impersonate you. This may reduce exposure, but it cannot guarantee that someone will not attempt impersonation.

If you already sent crypto
- Stop contact and send nothing more. Do not send additional crypto, money, gift cards, or personal information to the original contact—or to anyone who offers to recover the funds for a fee.
- Preserve evidence. Save messages, profile names, URLs, emails, phone numbers, app names, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, and screenshots. Keep the original records where possible.
- Report the incident to IC3. Use the official IC3 site and include transaction and contact details. Type the address yourself or reach it through an official FBI site rather than using a link sent by a stranger.
- Contact the exchange or financial institution used to fund the transfer. Use its official contact channel. Do not assume a crypto transfer can be reversed.
- Ignore unsolicited recovery offers and impersonators. The FBI warns that fraudulent recovery businesses may charge upfront fees, disappear, or demand more money. Private recovery firms cannot issue seizure orders, and law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate crimes. Be especially wary of anyone claiming to be FBI or law enforcement and asking for payment.
