Keep your Sony laptop closed inside a dry, closed travel bag; use a sleeve or padded case sized for your exact model; and keep hard or sharp objects from rubbing or pressing against it. A sleeve can help prevent scratches, a padded case can cushion some bumps, and a water-resistant outer bag can add a rain barrier—but none guarantees protection from every fall or makes the laptop waterproof.
Can you use a Sony laptop in the rain?
No. Sony VAIO safety documentation warns: “To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose your computer to rain or moisture.” Keep the laptop sheltered rather than carrying or using it where rain can reach it. Water-resistance advice for Sony phones or cameras does not apply to laptops. Read the VAIO safety warning.

Before traveling in wet weather, put the closed laptop inside a travel bag that provides a water-resistant outer barrier or compartment, and keep the bag closed. A fabric laptop sleeve alone should not be treated as waterproof. Check the bag’s closures and pocket construction, and avoid exposing the laptop directly to rain.
Choose a sleeve or case for the risks you face
Protection levels differ: soft fabric can separate the laptop from abrasive objects, while padding and structure can cushion some bumps and pressure. Neither type makes a laptop drop-proof, and a case is not automatically a rain barrier.

| Option | Scratch protection | Cushioning and pressure protection | Rain barrier | Bulk | Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slim soft sleeve or pouch | Helps reduce rubbing and contact scratches | Limited; not equivalent to a structured, padded case | Not a rain barrier | Usually the slimmest option | Check the laptop’s measurements against the sleeve’s internal dimensions |
| Padded or structured carrying case | Helps separate the laptop from other items | Designed to provide more cushioning against bumps and pressure; not drop-proof | Do not assume it is waterproof or water-resistant | More than a slim sleeve | Check model and internal dimensions |
| Water-resistant travel bag | Depends on the laptop compartment and what is packed beside it | Depends on the compartment’s padding and construction | Can add an outer rain barrier; verify closures and pocket construction | Depends on the bag | Check that the compartment accommodates the laptop and any sleeve |
Sony’s VAIO VGP-CP25 page describes that specific accessory as “A soft pouch that protects the PC from dirt, dust and scratches.” That is a claim about the VGP-CP25, not a fit or performance claim for every Sony laptop or pouch. See the VGP-CP25 features.
The VAIO VGP-CKC3 page describes an original shock-absorbing structure intended to make the PC easier to protect from external shocks. VAIO cautions that protection is not guaranteed in every use or situation, so do not treat the design as proof that a laptop will survive a particular fall. See the VGP-CKC3 features and caveat.

Check the exact Sony laptop model and dimensions
“Sony laptop” is not enough to establish accessory fit. Look up the exact model, find its dimensions, and compare them with the sleeve or case’s internal dimensions. Choose a snug fit that accommodates the machine without excessive movement; if you plan to use a sleeve inside a travel bag, check that the bag compartment fits both.
- Find the laptop’s model number and consult Sony’s laptop manuals and model lookup.
- Check the accessory’s stated internal dimensions, not just its product name or a broad screen-size label.
- Confirm that the laptop fits without being forced in or left with room to slide around.
- If using both a sleeve and a travel bag, check the fit of the packed combination in the bag compartment.
Pack to limit scratches, bumps, and pressure
- Keep keys, chargers, metal objects, and other potentially abrasive or hard items separate from the laptop where practical.
- Use a padded compartment when available, and avoid placing the computer beneath heavy objects that could press into it.
- Keep the travel bag closed in rain; a sleeve is an additional layer, not a substitute for an outer barrier.
- Do not assume manufacturer quality tests predict how a particular laptop will fare in a real-world fall. VAIO describes drop and abrasion test procedures, but those tests are not a guarantee for an individual device. Read VAIO’s quality-test descriptions.
What to do if the laptop gets wet
Keep moisture out of ports and openings. For exterior or screen cleaning, VAIO’s care guidance recommends a dry cloth for routine cleaning, warns that liquid inside can cause malfunction, and cautions against named solvents and cleaners on the specially treated LCD surface. Follow the care instructions for your exact model rather than trying a hair dryer or a cleaner recommended for another device family. Read VAIO’s care guidance.
