Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You cannot keep a secret screenshot API key secret in code delivered to a browser. Put the key in server-side secret storage, then have your frontend call an endpoint you control. That endpoint authenticates and limits the request, calls the screenshot provider using the secret, and returns only the screenshot result the caller is allowed to receive.
Why a frontend app cannot hide a secret key
Anything sent to a browser can be read or modified by its user. A key embedded in JavaScript, HTML, browser storage, or client-visible configuration is available to anyone who can inspect the app or its network traffic. Minifying or obfuscating a bundle does not change that. OWASP’s Web Frontend Security Cheat Sheet puts the rule plainly: “Anything sent to the client can be read or modified by the user, so keep all that secret stuff on the server please.”
This includes environment variables if your build system substitutes them into browser code. A variable name that sounds private is not protective if its value ships in the bundle.
Use a server-side endpoint as the security boundary
Keep the provider key on a server, serverless function, or backend-for-frontend (BFF). The browser sends a request to your endpoint without the upstream key; the endpoint checks the caller and request, then makes the provider request itself. OAuth’s guidance for browser-based applications treats browser apps as public clients and describes a BFF as one way to keep credentials on the server.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Store the key server-side. Use your deployment platform’s server-side secret configuration or a secrets vault. Do not serialize it into HTML, expose it through a public build-time variable, or return it in an API response. OWASP’s Protect Data Everywhere guidance recommends protecting application secrets and using a secrets vault.
- Create a narrow screenshot route. For example, expose
POST /api/screenshotson your own app. Accept only the inputs your product needs, such as a URL, viewport dimensions, and output format. - Authenticate and authorize requests. Check the signed-in user or other trusted identity on the server. Enforce permissions and per-user or per-tenant quotas there; never rely on a user ID, role, or permission supplied only by frontend code.
- Validate and constrain inputs. Allow only supported formats and reasonable dimensions. Decide which screenshot options callers may use. Do not blindly forward arbitrary provider parameters, headers, cookies, or authorization values supplied by the browser.
- Call the provider from the server. Add the provider key using its supported authentication mechanism. Prefer a request header or body when supported instead of putting credentials in a URL or query string, which may be recorded in logs.
- Return only the permitted result. Send the image, PDF, or a controlled error response back to the caller. Do not include the upstream key or internal provider credentials in response bodies or headers.
The exact validation rules depend on your provider and product. If callers can request screenshots of arbitrary URLs, also consider whether your server could be abused to reach internal or otherwise restricted network locations; define and enforce an appropriate URL policy rather than treating frontend validation as sufficient.
Control access, usage, and cost
A proxy keeps the key out of the browser, but it also creates a billable endpoint. Protect that endpoint as a resource attackers or unintended users may try to consume.

- Require authentication when screenshots should be limited to app users; apply authorization and quotas on the server.
- Rate-limit requests and return HTTP 429 when a caller exceeds the permitted rate. OWASP’s REST Security Cheat Sheet recommends throttling and discusses revoking keys when clients violate usage agreements.
- Set request timeouts, maximum input sizes, and limits for expensive options such as full-page captures, according to your application’s needs.
- Monitor request volume, failures, and provider usage so unusual activity can be investigated promptly.
- Keep provider credentials least-privileged where the provider supports that model, and restrict the operations the proxy exposes.
Do not treat CORS as authentication. CORS can restrict which browser origins are allowed to make cross-origin requests, but it does not hide a key or stop non-browser clients from calling a publicly reachable endpoint. Keep the secret server-side and enforce authorization and quotas at the endpoint. OWASP distinguishes these controls in its REST Security Cheat Sheet.
What to do if the key was already exposed
Revoke or rotate the credential through the provider, then update the server-side secret configuration. Removing the key from the latest source code does not make a credential already shipped in a bundle or committed to a repository secret again. Review provider usage and your application logs for activity you do not recognize, and verify that old deployments no longer use the exposed value. OWASP recommends revoking keys in response to misuse; rotation after exposure is a prudent incident-response step.

With ScreenshotNeo, keep the access key on your server and call its screenshot endpoint from there. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Keep the access key out of browser code even when using this endpoint: put it in your server-side secret configuration and make your own controlled endpoint the frontend’s only route to it. Does CORS make a screenshot API key safe in frontend code?
No. CORS affects browser cross-origin requests; it does not make a credential embedded in browser-delivered code secret.
