Keep grit and objects out of the hinge and folding path
Before closing the phone, check the inner display and hinge area for sand, crumbs, grit, or anything else that could be trapped between the halves. Keep keys, coins, cards, and other loose objects away from the open screen and the closure path. Google warns that fine particles can scratch the softer flexible display or damage the hinge mechanism; Motorola cautions that an object between the screens can damage the screen or stop the phone closing properly (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance; Motorola Razr 2024 help).
Fold the phone gently. If it does not close normally, do not force it; check for an obstruction and follow the instructions for your specific model.
Handle the inner screen as a flexible display, not ordinary cover glass
The inner screen is softer than conventional phone glass. Avoid pressing hard on it, puncturing it, or touching it with sharp objects; take particular care around the central folding area. Google specifically warns Pixel Fold owners to keep crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects away from the flexible display. Motorola likewise warns against excessive force on the Razr 2024 screen. These are model-specific manufacturer directions, so check the manual for your own foldable rather than assuming every generation has identical rules (Google; Motorola).

Keep the factory screen protector unless the maker says otherwise
Do not peel off the inner screen’s pre-installed film or apply a generic replacement simply because it looks like a conventional screen protector. Google says not to apply a third-party protector to Pixel Fold. Samsung does not recommend removing its pre-installed protector and directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement. Motorola advises against third-party films and self-replacement on Razr 2024.
If the factory film bubbles, lifts, or warps, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for model-specific advice. Samsung and Motorola recommend authorized service for protector replacement rather than treating it as a universal DIY job (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance; Samsung foldable care; Motorola Razr 2024 help).

Clean gently and follow your phone’s care instructions
For routine cleaning, Motorola recommends a dry, soft cloth and warns against abrasive cloths; Google recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for general cleaning. Follow the cleaning directions for your exact model, and do not spray cleaner into openings. If you are unsure whether a product or method is suitable for the inner display, consult the manufacturer’s instructions before using it (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance; Motorola Razr 2024 help).
Choose a case for the exact model and check its hinge cover
A case designed for your model can help protect the phone from external damage and dirt. Before buying, check the exact model compatibility, hinge coverage, bulk, grip, and whether a hinge cover interferes with use. For example, Google notes that the hinge cover on its Pixel 11 Pro Fold case overlaps the outer display while the phone is unfolded—a practical trade-off to check against how you use the phone (Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold case guide). Samsung and Motorola also direct owners toward cases designed for their specific foldable models (Samsung foldable care; Motorola Razr 2024 help).

There is no universal case recommendation here: fit and hinge-cover trade-offs depend on the phone. Check the maker’s current case guidance and product details for your model.

Do not assume a water-resistance rating means a foldable is waterproof or protected from dust. Google says Pixel Fold is not dust resistant and that its water resistance can diminish or be lost through wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. Motorola advises avoiding dust exposure because it may reduce hinge life or damage the display. Ratings and care guidance vary by model, so consult the exact phone’s documentation (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance; Motorola Razr 2024 help).
