Foldable phones are not automatically more fragile than conventional phones, but their hinges and flexible inner screens introduce durability questions a slab phone does not have. There is no independent, population-level failure-rate comparison here that proves foldables break more often. Buyers should compare the exact model’s hinge testing, screen construction, ingress rating, care guidance, and repair terms instead of relying on a blanket durability verdict.
What hinge-cycle claims do—and do not—tell you
A fold count describes repeated opening and closing under stated test conditions. It is not a drop test, a prediction of how long every owner’s phone will last, or a standardized basis for ranking brands.

Because these figures come from different manufacturers, models, and test descriptions, a larger number does not by itself prove that one phone will last longer in ordinary use. The sources do not provide an independent comparative failure rate for foldables versus conventional phones.
Inner screens, cover screens, and drop damage
A foldable’s flexible inner display and its outer cover glass are different components. A manufacturer’s claim about tougher cover glass does not establish that the folding display is drop-proof, and a hinge-cycle result says nothing about impact resistance.

Screen care can be model-specific
For the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Samsung says to keep the main-display protective film attached and avoid sharp pressure or objects between the screens. It also advises care around sand and small particles. These are instructions for those models; check the manual and support guidance for the particular phone you are considering rather than assuming every foldable has identical care requirements. Water and dust ratings are not interchangeable
Check the ingress rating for the exact model. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 are IPX8 water-resistant but not dust-resistant, and warns against sand and small particles. Samsung’s Fold6 business article states an IP48 rating. These examples show why one model’s rating should not be carried over to another—or treated as proof that water resistance includes dust protection. Compare the risks that matter to your use
- Repeated opening and closing: Find the model’s fold-cycle claim and read the stated test conditions. Treat it as a manufacturer-specific lab claim, not a service-life guarantee.
- Accidental drops: Look at the inner and outer screen construction separately, then check repair and replacement terms. Do not use a hinge count or ingress rating as a proxy for drop protection.
- Dusty or sandy environments: Check the exact dust rating and care guidance. A water-resistance rating alone does not establish dust resistance.
- Water exposure: Confirm the exact IP rating and read the warranty exclusions; do not assume that resistance makes every type of exposure safe.
- Long-term ownership: Compare screen-replacement and repair costs, warranty coverage, and any protection offer in your region before buying.
Check repair coverage before you buy
Repair terms affect the cost of owning a foldable if its inner screen or hinge needs service. Samsung’s Fold6 business article mentions a one-time discounted screen replacement under Galaxy Z Assurance, but that page does not establish current regional availability, eligibility, or price. Manufacturers also describe testing beyond hinge cycles. Samsung’s 2023 account of reliability testing for the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 lists folding, tumbling, water-resistance, environmental-chamber, drop, and steel-ball-drop test categories, but does not publish detailed outcomes on that page. How to make a model-to-model comparison
- Identify the exact model and region. Ratings, protection offers, and warranty terms can differ by model and market.
- Compare hinge tests on their own terms. Record the stated cycle count and test conditions, and keep each figure attributed to its manufacturer.
- Inspect both display surfaces. Check what the maker says about the flexible inner screen, protective film, cover glass, and frame.
- Verify dust and water protection separately. Read the model’s full rating and care instructions rather than inferring one type of protection from another.
- Price the downside. Find out what screen or hinge repairs cost, what the warranty excludes, and whether a protection plan is available and eligible where you live.
