To prevent an order from executing outside regular market hours, check the order’s time-in-force and extended-hours setting in your brokerage account, cancel stale orders through the broker’s own workflow, and confirm the status changes to canceled. To respond to an order you did not place, contact the brokerage immediately through an independently verified channel, secure your login and recovery email, and keep a written record.
This guide is for U.S. retail brokerage customers. Brokers set their own rules for eligible securities, order types, extended-hours access and order carryover, so verify the current instructions in your account and the firm’s disclosures.

Why overnight orders can behave differently
“Overnight trading” can mean different things. FINRA describes overnight trading for certain stocks as 8 p.m.–4 a.m. ET, after-hours trading as 4–8 p.m. ET, and pre-market trading as typically 7–9:30 a.m. ET. These are descriptions of trading sessions, not a promise that your broker accepts orders for every security during each period. Check FINRA’s extended-hours trading guidance and your broker’s current schedule.

An order may fill only in part, not fill at all, or execute at a less competitive price. Extended-hours venues are not linked in the same way as regular-hours markets, and publication of the National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO) is limited to regular trading hours. A price displayed on one venue may therefore not represent the best price available elsewhere.

Whether an order can trade outside regular hours depends on more than the clock. Its type, time-in-force, extended-hours authorization, eligible security and the broker’s rules all matter.
Audit open orders before the next session
Use your broker’s order-status or open-orders screen and inspect each working order. Don’t rely on a remembered trade or on the session shown in the app.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Security and side: Confirm the ticker or other security, and whether the order is to buy or sell.
- Quantity and price instructions: Check the share or contract quantity, order type, and any limit or stop price.
- Time-in-force: Determine whether it is a day order, good-till-canceled (GTC), or another duration the broker offers.
- Session eligibility: Look for a setting, checkbox or separate instruction that permits extended-hours execution.
- Status: Check whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, pending cancellation or canceled.
FINRA explains that a day order generally remains active for the current trading day, while a GTC order can remain active until it is executed or canceled, subject to the firm’s duration limit. A day order may require a separate instruction to participate in extended hours. Brokers may restrict extended-hours orders to certain securities or order types, and an unfilled order may be canceled or carried into the next regular session under the firm’s rules. See FINRA’s order time parameters and extended-hours guidance.
Cancel stale orders—and verify the result
- Open the broker’s open-orders or order-status page and select the specific order.
- Use the broker’s cancellation workflow; do not assume that closing the app or submitting a cancellation request stops the order immediately.
- Refresh the order status and confirm it says canceled. If it remains open, pending or partially filled, contact the broker promptly and ask what is still working.
- Save the confirmation or record the order ID, time and final status.
A cancellation request is not proof that an order was canceled. An order might execute before the cancellation takes effect, so verify its final status and check for any fill.

Choose order types with their trade-offs in mind
Order type determines what the broker is instructed to prioritize. It does not, by itself, prevent an order from participating in extended hours; confirm the session setting and time-in-force separately. FINRA’s order-type explanations describe the basic trade-offs:
| Order type | What it prioritizes | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Execution at the best available price when the order reaches the market. | The execution price is not guaranteed. In thin or volatile trading, it may differ materially from the last displayed price. |
| Limit | A maximum acceptable purchase price or minimum acceptable sale price. | The order may not execute if the market does not reach the limit. A price constraint is not a fill guarantee. |
| Stop | Activation when the specified stop price is reached; a conventional stop then becomes a market order. | The resulting execution can be at a price different from the stop price, especially in a fast-moving market. |
| Stop-limit | Activation at the stop price, followed by a limit order with a price constraint. | The limit can prevent an unexpectedly poor execution, but the order may remain unfilled if the market moves past the limit. |
When comparing settings, weigh the chance of a fill against price control and the risk of no fill. Also check when the order expires or carries forward, whether it can trade outside regular hours, and the broker’s rules for changing or canceling it near a session boundary. There is no order type that guarantees both execution and a particular price.

Secure account access and recovery channels
Enable the strongest multi-factor authentication (MFA) method your brokerage supports, use a unique password, and secure the email account used for password recovery. Treat unexpected sign-in links, reset messages or contact-detail changes as suspicious; use the brokerage’s official app or a website address you enter yourself instead of following an unsolicited link.
FINRA’s October 15, 2020 Information Notice explains that MFA combines different types of factors and reduces the risk that exposure of one credential alone leads to account compromise. The notice also discusses phishing and fraudulent password-reset attempts. Its reference to FIDO resources does not establish that a particular brokerage accepts a hardware security key, so check compatibility and the firm’s lost-device recovery process before relying on one. See FINRA’s cybersecurity notice.

If you suspect someone has access
- Contact the brokerage immediately through a phone number or support channel independently confirmed in its official website or app. Ask how to secure online access and dispute activity.
- Ask the firm to review recent orders and any changes to your email, phone number or other account details.
- From a trusted device, change compromised credentials and secure the email account used for recovery. Do not use a link in a suspicious message to reset either account.
- Save relevant messages, alerts, screenshots and the broker’s responses, including dates and order IDs.
Exact account-lock controls, dispute procedures and remedies vary by broker. FINRA’s 2020 notice describes account-takeover and new-account fraud schemes involving fraudulent options trading, including activity that may involve illiquid options or trades between accounts controlled by a fraudster. That is a reason to check unexpected options activity and profile changes carefully—not evidence that every unauthorized trade follows that pattern. See FINRA Regulatory Notice 20-32.
What to do about an unfamiliar order or trade
- Question the broker promptly. Ask about any transaction you do not understand or did not authorize, and request the order details and the firm’s dispute process. FINRA’s guidance is to question the broker immediately. See Questions to Ask Before You File a Complaint.
- Escalate if the response is unsatisfactory. Ask for the branch manager or compliance department. If an unauthorized trade caused a loss, submit a written complaint and keep a copy with all related correspondence.
- Preserve a clear record. Keep order IDs, timestamps, trade confirmations, statements, account alerts, screenshots and written communications. Record whom you contacted and when.
- Consider an outside complaint channel. If the firm’s response remains unsatisfactory, you can consider filing a complaint with FINRA. FINRA covers most brokerage firms and associated persons; complaints involving some investment advisers, transfer agents, mutual funds or public companies may be directed to the SEC or a state securities regulator. FINRA’s investor contacts page explains available routes.
A loss by itself does not establish misconduct, and FINRA action does not guarantee that money or securities will be returned. The complaint process is a way to raise the issue, not a promise of reimbursement. See FINRA’s complaint guidance.
