To get a useful architecture diagram from Claude Code, specify what question it should answer, who will use it, what belongs inside its boundary, how detailed it should be, which notation and names to use, where to save it, and how to check it. Ask Claude Code to inspect the repository first, distinguish observed facts from assumptions, and review the finished diagram against explicit criteria.
Start with the diagram’s purpose and audience
Tell Claude Code what the diagram is for and who needs to read it. “Create an architecture diagram” leaves the intended view open; a diagram for onboarding, an incident review, or a system-design discussion may need different components and detail.

State the question the diagram must answer, such as how a request moves through the application or which services exchange data. Anthropic’s prompting guidance recommends clear, explicit instructions and constraints. Its advice is general prompting guidance, not a diagram-specific method.

Name the applications, services, data stores, and external systems to include. Also say what is out of scope, and whether to show deployment infrastructure, data flow, or only major logical components. If one view would become crowded, request separate diagrams for distinct questions rather than asking for every detail at once.
#1 Best Overall
Choose a notation and output format yourself. The official Anthropic material cited here does not recommend a particular architecture notation or establish a diagram-specific Claude Code feature. Specify the notation and file extension, then verify the syntax and rendered result in the tool your team uses.
Ground the diagram in repository evidence
Ask Claude Code to inspect relevant source files and configuration before drawing. It should identify components and connections it can support from those materials, rather than filling gaps with plausible-sounding architecture. Require uncertain details to be marked as assumptions, with missing evidence or questions listed separately.

Give naming and relationship rules explicitly: for example, use repository names for components, group them by application or boundary, and label arrows with the interaction or data they represent. Specify the destination path for the artifact so the result is easy to find and review.

Inspect this repository before creating an architecture diagram. First identify the relevant applications, services, data stores, external systems, and connections from source files and configuration. Create a [diagram purpose or view] for [audience] that answers [reader question]. Include [scope] and exclude [out-of-scope items]. Use [chosen notation and output format]. Follow these naming, grouping, and relationship-label rules: [rules]. Save the result at [path]. Do not invent components or connections: mark uncertain items as assumptions and list the evidence that is missing. After drafting, check that every in-scope component is represented, names match the repository, connections have clear directions and labels, and the diagram remains readable at its intended viewing size. Summarize assumptions and unresolved questions.
Keep placeholders specific: replace them with a concrete audience, boundary, output path, and review checklist. Anthropic’s prompting guidance also recommends sequential instructions when order or completeness matters, and relevant structured examples when an example can show the desired format.

Keep recurring conventions in CLAUDE.md
For conventions that should apply across diagram tasks, record them in the repository’s CLAUDE.md: notation, component naming, boundary and grouping rules, arrow semantics, preferred detail level, output location, and review checklist. Anthropic describes project memory as a place for shared instructions and gives project architecture and coding conventions as examples. Its guidance recommends specific, organized instructions and reviewing them as the project changes: Manage Claude’s memory.

Review the artifact, not just the response
Claude Code’s CLI reference lists print-mode response formats such as text, JSON, and stream JSON. Those are formats for CLI output, not evidence that a diagram notation is supported or that a generated file will render correctly. Specify the desired notation and file extension in the task, then open the artifact in the renderer your team actually uses. See Anthropic’s CLI reference.
- Does the diagram answer the question stated in the prompt?
- Are the system boundary and included components correct for the requested scope?
- Do component names match the repository, and are symbols and groupings used consistently?
- Are connections directed and labeled clearly?
- Can a reader tell which details are supported by repository evidence and which remain assumptions?
- Is the rendered diagram readable at the size and in the format the team will use?
Anthropic’s official guidance does not publish a diagram-specific accuracy standard or measured success rate for this workflow. Treat the checklist as a practical review method, not a guarantee that Claude Code will produce a correct diagram.
