To program a universal remote to a Roku TV, find a code for your remote or cable/satellite provider, put the remote into setup mode, enter the code, and test the TV’s power and volume. The code and setup sequence vary by remote, and a working code may still provide only basic controls.
Before you start: find the right code
Open Roku’s code list for cable, satellite, and universal remotes. Find your remote brand or service provider and note the listed TV code or codes. Roku’s instructions include codes for providers and direct users to remote manufacturers for setup help when needed.

There is no single code guaranteed to work with every universal remote. If more than one code is listed, keep the others handy; you may need to try them one at a time.
Program the universal remote
- Turn on the Roku TV. Use the TV’s power button or another working remote.
- Put the universal remote into setup mode. For remotes with a Setup button, press and hold it until the red indicator stays on. If there is no Setup button, check the instructions for the exact remote model; some remotes use a TV + Power button sequence.
- Enter the code. Type the four- or five-digit code you found for the remote brand or provider. The indicator should blink or turn off after entry.
- Test power and volume. Try Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down. If they control the Roku TV, programming worked for those functions.
- If it does not work, try another listed code. Repeat the setup process with the next code for your remote or provider.
What to do if some buttons do not work
A code can program basic TV control without enabling Roku menu navigation. Roku distinguishes basic control—such as power, volume, and input—from expanded control, which can include Home, directional arrows, Back, and playback buttons. Whether those extra buttons work depends on the capabilities of the exact remote.

Check the remote’s model-specific instructions and code list for its supported functions. If power and volume work but Home or the arrow keys do not, the remote may offer basic control only rather than being incorrectly programmed.
If no code works
- Try every code listed for your remote brand or provider, repeating the setup steps for each one.
- Check that the remote is set to TV mode, not Cable or AUX.
- Replace weak batteries before trying again.
- Roku suggests trying Insignia TV codes, which often work with Roku TVs. For a Sharp-made Roku TV, try Sharp codes.
- If the codes still fail, contact the cable or satellite provider or the remote manufacturer for instructions for your exact model.
Universal remotes and Roku voice remotes use different setup methods
A third-party universal remote uses its own setup procedure and code list. A Roku voice remote that supports TV power and volume is set up through Roku’s separate on-screen process; compatible models may detect the TV settings during setup. Some TV models may not support every control. Follow Roku’s universal-remote instructions for third-party remotes and its voice-remote setup guidance for supported Roku voice remotes.

When a replacement remote makes more sense
If your current universal remote cannot operate the functions you need, Roku’s Roku TV Remote is a Roku TV-specific replacement, not a device for programming another remote. Roku says it is compatible with all Roku TV models and includes power, volume, mute, and streaming controls. Check current product details before buying.
