Open your document and choose File > Print (or press Command-P). In the print dialog, set Double-sided to On, then click Print. For pages that will be bound along the top edge, choose On (Short Edge). These controls appear only when the selected printer supports duplex printing, and available options can vary by app and printer.
Print on both sides from a Mac
- Open the document in the app you want to print from.
- Choose File > Print, or press Command-P.
- In the print dialog, find Double-sided and choose On. Choose On (Short Edge) if the pages are intended to bind at the top edge.
- Click Print.
Apple refers to this as double-sided or two-sided printing. The exact print-dialog layout and available settings can differ between apps and printers. Apple’s guide to printing double-sided pages covers the setting, while Apple’s print-settings guide explains when it is available.

If the Double-sided option is missing
The selected printer must support double-sided printing for the control to appear. If you believe it does, check that the intended printer is selected in the print dialog. Since options vary by printer and app, consult the app’s or printer’s documentation if the steps or labels differ. Apple’s print-settings guide describes this capability requirement.

Print double-sided manually on a single-sided printer
A printer without automatic duplexing can still produce a two-sided document: print one page set, reload the sheets, then print the complementary set on their reverse sides. Apple documents selecting odd or even pages through Paper Handling, but the correct way to reload sheets depends on the printer’s paper feed.

- Open File > Print and locate Paper Handling in the print options.
- Choose either the odd-page or even-page set and print it.
- Use the printer’s feed instructions to reload the printed sheets, keeping track of which side and edge must face the feed.
- Return to Paper Handling, select the complementary page set, and print it on the reverse sides.
Because reload orientation is not universal, test the process with a few pages before printing a long document. Apple’s instructions for printing pages as odd or even explain the page-set selection.
